The Active Learner 5.1
Welcome to the second issue of The Active Learner for Spring 2016! We will send updates in this format periodically throughout the semester.
In this issue:
New Crestron Panel
Lab Times
Important Reminders
Support
New Crestron Panel
You may have noticed thereâs a new control panel for the room. Weâve had issues on and off with the Crestron control panel losing its connection with the base, resulting in a low battery. With the new power supply, the panel should be working. At this time, the panel is not equipped with wireless so it should remain connected to the base. If you ever run into problems with the new control panel, please let Classroom Support know, and remember you can use the âLaunch XPanelâ icon on the desktop of Laptop 1 as an alternative.
Lab Times
Just a reminder, we have set aside times where you or your students can play around with features of the room. For students, be sure to have them contact us beforehand ([email protected]) to ensure we can be present to assist.
The dedicated lab times for Spring 2016 are:
Wednesdays, 2-3:30 p.m.
Thursdays, 3-4:15 p.m.
Important Reminders
Just a few tidbits of info to keep in mind:
After class is over, close and lock the laptop cabinets, and also power down the room system via the control panel (unless the next instructor has already arrived).
Log off, if applicable, from the Main PC.
Support
For general classroom questions, concerns, problems, or assistance, contact Classroom Services. Their staff is the most knowledgeable about the hardware in the room, and can also address the need to specific types of software. If youâd like some support on using the technology in the room in your teaching, contact the SOE Office of Educational Technology.

Welcome to the first issue of The Active Learner for Spring 2016! We will send updates in this format periodically throughout the semester.
In this issue:

Logins
Laptop 1 and Laptop 2 will log in as âpodia-userâ automatically when you start the computer. Please use this login rather than logging in with your own credentials. Â If you find that these computers have been logged out, please restart them (pushing and holding the power button) so they automatically log in again.
If you find the need to use a third computer (for example, if you wish to show three different pieces of content at the same time), the Main PC is available for your use. You will need to use your own credentials to log in to this computer. Be sure to log off after class!
Videoconferencing
If youâd like to have students attend remotely or youâd like to have a guest speaker from afar, you can use the roomâs videoconferencing system. On the Crestron control panel, choose "Basic Videoconferencing." Connect to Zoom using the speed dial. Using the Dialer screen, enter the room number when prompted, followed by the # sign.Â

The big picture here slash reflects mobile working. Universities have yo get with this program and start supporting, teaching, and studying these new workflows, and start working in these ways. Particularly the PowerPoint presentations, they need to die.

The Official Newsletter of Enderis 127
LoginsÂ
Laptop 1 and Laptop 2 will log in as âpodia-userâ automatically when you start the computer. Please use this login rather than logging in with your own credentials. Â If you find that these computers have been logged out, please restart them (pushing and holding the power button) so they automatically log in again.Â

Important  RemindersÂ
Just a few tidbits of info to keep in mind:Â
â      After class is over, close and lock the laptop cabinets, and also power down the room system via the control panel (unless the next instructor has already arrived).
â      Log off, if applicable, from the Main PC.
â      The space under the chairs is for studentsâ bags, coats, etc. Just be sure to remind them to take their stuff with them after class!
Reserving  the Zoom RoomÂ
If you plan on using the Zoom videoconferencing feature of Enderis 127, thatâs awesome! This feature is great for remote students, connecting with other universities/classrooms, or having guest speakers. However, although the Zoom room exists âin the cloud,â it is just like any other room: it must be reserved. We have a process to do this...
Handwriting ConversionÂ
On both the SMART and Promethean boards, you can turn your handwriting into text. The methods are different, but both are fairly simple. We invite you to learn about and experiment with this feature!Â
SMARTboard (Video: https://youtu.be/U77agTFX3wo)Â
In SMART Notebook, write with the pen tool.
When finished, under the Edit menu, choose Select All (Ctrl+A).
Use one of the downward-facing arrows to group the selected elements (Ctrl+G).
Use the downward-facing arrow and select âRecognize Handwriting.â
Text can now be resized or edited.Â
Promethean Board (Video: https://youtu.be/5n2Nc1jGUdY)Â
In ActivInspire, before doing any writing, select Handwriting Recognition (Ctrl+Shift+H) from the Tools menu.
As you write, handwriting will be converted to text after a brief pause.
To discontinue Handwriting Recognition, choose a different tool (such as the regular pen tool).Â
Student SurveysÂ
If you participated in the competitive process in order to teach in Enderis 127 this semester, you know that we be sending your students two surveys over the course the semester. The survey will ask students about their experiences in the classroom, both with the furniture and the technology. Gathering this information is part of our obligation to the granting agency that funded the technology hardware in the classroom. We ask that you please encourage your students to complete the survey, which will be sent to their UWM email address.
SupportÂ
For general classroom questions, concerns, problems, or assistance, contact Classroom Services. Their staff is the most knowledgeable about the hardware in the room, and can also address the need to specific types of software:Â

As they say in poker, if you don't know who the sucker is at the table, it is you. The same could be said of changes to education. At long last, however, the ed tech startups appear to be grappling with the reality that the vast learning market is not made up of people just like them. This can only improve the quality and diversity of their offerings, and also creates opportunity for those who know about education to be involved. I suspect the next wave of edtech will be more embedded in traditional institutions rather than committed to destroying/replacing them from without.
