undertale meta deepdive: sans is not a good person (OR the sans theory masterpost pt. 1)
❤️ || Part 2 || Part 3

Sans is far from this valiant epitome of good that the fandom so often paints him as. He’s not a hero—hell, he might even be a bad, terrible person. At least in the past. My intention in this post isn’t to crush popular fandom interpretations of Sans in a bad faith argument, rather, it is to challenge preconceptions that have existed for years and to open up discussion on the dubious morality of this popular and loved character; I certainly love him a little more after doing this analysis.
Section I - A Bad Person (The “What”)
Sans is certainly not opposed to leaving us little breadcrumbs for us in regards to his mysterious past. We get the idea that Sans is separated from his home, likely due to something he did. Something he had thought was important. Something that led him to take his home for granted.
So based off of the previous dialogue, this “type” that he intimately knows… he’s talking about himself. He was very “determined” to do whatever he did, which cost him his home, likely nearly everything he cared about given his angst.
So let’s say Sans used to be “determined”.
Sans is also aware of the SAVE function, meta knowledge that only the player and Flowey should know about because they have or have had this ability in the past.
“Take it from me”: accept that what I say is true, because I know or have experienced it. Sans should have quit when he had the chance. Never satisfied, too determined to bow out. But is he talking about the same thing we’ve been doing?
When Sans threatens us with the infamous “bad time”, he is NOT referring to the fight… but what comes after, because only after he is struck down, he gives us one final piece of advice:
But HOW does he know that the world is going to be thrown into the “abyss”? Unless he has experienced this first-hand.
This is Papyrus confronting us in the genocide run antecedent to his fight…
…and this is him on Sans. An eerily mirrored piece of dialogue from Papyrus describing us and his brother. What do we know so far? Both Sans and the player need to be kept on “the straight and narrow”, both are “determined”, and both do irreparable damage to the world, possibly sending it to “the abyss”.
Purgatory: a place or state of suffering inhabited by the souls of sinners who are expiating their sins before going to heaven. Not to mention the suspicious usage of the word “abyss” by Papyrus.
From the evidence gathered, it seems that the reason why Sans isn’t able to return to his world is because he destroyed it in the same manner we destroyed Undertale in the genocide run. Why else would he say “take it from me”; he empirically knows what happens when the world is pushed to its very limits.
But which world could he have destroyed? What world did Sans come from?
(Continues under the cut because this gets really long.)

Undertale: Sans [INFJ]
UNOFFICIAL TYPING by aanau
WARNING: SPOILERS
Introverted Intuition (Ni): Sans is extremely perceptive and definitely has an intuition that raises suspicion. He’s able to pick up on the motives of the player, and on other things that he really shouldn’t be able to pick up on, by seeing patterns.. He’s independent and stubborn, never bothering to do anything because he sees no meaning in any of it (and he is also in the grip of inferior Se). Though I’m not one for Ni stereotypes, Sans fits the “mystical” aspect of introverted intuition to a tee. Even though he’s a friendly and seemingly open guy (assuming we’re talking about the Pacifist Route of the game), he’s full of secrets, and a hidden complexity that no one has completely cracked. Despite his jokeful nature, Sans is a very deep individual, in thought, words, and actions. He sees the varying perspectives of the player and in general, and comments on them throughout the game, and especially at the end when he “judges” you. Sans has an understanding of people and the mechanics of the game he’s trapped in.
Extraverted Feeling (Fe): Without a doubt, Sans knows people. He’s remarkably caring about his brother, Papyrus, and fights his depression for his sake. When we first meet Sans, everything he does and says is rooted around making his brother happy. Sans enjoys his dumb jokes, but you can tell that he likes it when they’re actually appreciated. When someone actually finds his jokes funny, such as Toriel, he’ll keep trying to please the person with even more of them. Sans is a people-pleaser, and probably was even more so before he gave up on everything. He goes to Grillby’s obsessively, because it’s a place where everyone knows him and finds him charming. On a Pacifist Route of the game, Sans talks to the player a few times. He shares stories and is overall a warm character (until he snaps for a moment and becomes extremely intimidating). In the Genocide Route, Sans stands in the player’s way, acting on his wide range of intense emotions. In the fight, he attempts to appeal to the player in different ways, using that Fe manipulation.
Introverted Thinking (Ti): Despite actually being an emotional character, Sans is still rational. He definitely keeps thoughts to himself and has an internal logic that helps and motivates him to understand the “game.” Sans can seem rather cold. Even though he’s friendly, you get a distant vibe from him no matter what route you play. This is a Ni-Ti loop. Looping INFJs are many things, but one thing they are is detached. Sans keeps the player at a safe distance at all times. He keeps an eye on you, interacts with you (unless you kill his brother then you won’t be seeing him for a while), but doesn’t get too close. This most likely comes from being skeptical of the player’s motives and/or knowing everything will be reset, so why bother befriending someone new? In this loop, Sans also internally justifies his actions, or rather, lack of action. If he fights the player, he admits that maybe he’s just lying to himself to excuse his laziness. The reason he’s so lazy is because he knows everything will reset, and undo anything he does. But he clearly feels guilty deep down that he lets that internal logic keep him from living.
Extraverted Sensing (Se): Sans is lazy and he overindulges. He spends his time sleeping, eating, drinking ketchup bottles (yeah I don’t know…probably an allusion to alcohol), and reading magazines. This all includes when he’s “working.” His Se isn’t well developed. That, or he just doesn’t care to exercise it. He devotes little of his energy to the present, because he’s too hung up on a bigger picture to truly enjoy a moment. He’d rather sleep the day away, not partaking in any of it. He has given up on everything, and so he lives in a constant state of dissociation and empty, meaningless activities. There is no future, or at least, he’s lost sight of any future he could be a part of.

In the recent Undertale newsletter, Toby Fox showed off an unused scene that would have occurred in the Judgement Hall had the player decided to speedrun the game! This scene features Sans chastising the player for being early and slowly eating an ice cream for about a full minute while an original, slow song plays. I’m sure this would have been quite a headache for speedrunners!

yeah "sans undertale/your mom" jokes will never fail to make me laugh, but I'm 100% serious when i say that his description of his and toriel's first meeting is one of the sweetest, most heartfelt bits of dialogue in the entire game
