Entry 6!!
BOOK REVIEW FINALLY
To have some context I’ll give a summary of the novel: The book presents the story of a 16 year old boy named Holden that has been expelled from his school. Since his parents don’t know about his expulsion, he decides to wait until christmas vacation to go home. Throughout the days he waits to go home, certain events happen and we see his mental health decline because he becomes emotionally unstable and exhausted. Some strengths are that the character of Holden is very interesting and the story too, many readers can relate to the book and enjoy it very much. It was very fascinating to analyze how Holden evolved throughout the story. Some weaknesses from the book are that the letter size and some unnecessary information that was included in the book made it feel like you were reading for hours. Also, the beginning of the book is very slow so it doesn’t catch your attention quickly. Lastly, when Holden wants to do something, he takes like three damn hours to finally do it. My final opinion is that the book has a very good story because you can see how Holden is slowly decaying and you can relate to what he is going through. At first many people (including me) had a negative opinion about Holden but then they changed their mind after they understood what was happening to him.

things going on in my mind
After thinking a lot about the book I have to read for english and the one I have to read for spanish that is about many different stories and between them there is one about a green parrot that I don’t know why but it killed it’s owners that reminded me of a green parrot plush my aunt bought me outside a museum when I was like 6 and after 9 years I gave it so that poor kids that don’t have money for toys can enjoy it but maybe I didn’t because I don’t remember. The book I have to read for english has a carousel in it I think and it stresses me because those things go very slow but I also dislike the ones that go fast because those things need a specific speed to be fun. Soon I will have more time for me because I will finish school soon :). I'll be free from thinking about tests like english and biology and I'll be free from those nights I could not sleep because I was anxious about school stuff and now I can stay in bed with the plush toys I have since I was like 7 but they mean a lot to me even if my mom says it's stupid.

Themes/ Messages
A universal theme from the novel 'catcher in the rye' is "The painfulness Of Growing Up" because many adolescents can go through the same feeling of being scared of change and being scared about not understanding the things around them. Like Holden, they don’t admit this fear and only express it a few times. In his fantasy about being the catcher in the rye, Holden wants to protect children from losing their innocence by preventing them from falling off the cliff so they don’t enter the world of adulthood that is full of phoniness.

Symbol from the novel :)
The catcher in the rye has many interesting symbols, but by far the one that I liked the most was the Museum. The museum is related to the character Holden and represents the element of ‘constancy’ because according to Holden’s words, while he had changed every time he returned there, the museum always stayed the same. I heard that it also represents Holden’s desire to keep everything the same, a world where nothing changes and where everything is simple. I think it’s a beautiful desire but it sounds kind of scary when you think of it.

Entry 2! Informal letter
(remake of an old letter)
Hello J.D Salinger, I’m writing again because I finished your book and liked it (it’s hard for me to like a book so feel lucky). I think that Holden was a very interesting character, I used to think he was  annoying but then I got to understand what he went through. Sadly, you feel like you’re reading for hours. In some chapters there is some unnecessary information that you could remove so the story feels more precise and some of your readers don’t get confused. Another problem is that the story doesn’t get interesting until chapter 6 or something. It can be boring because sometimes Holden takes like a whole chapter to do something or maybe he decides not to do it, and since I'm a person that gets angry easily, Holden really made me mad haha. Just to finish, I really want to know more about Holden, like his past and why he reacts like that with Mr. Antonioli (I don’t remember if that was his actual name).

Entry 1. Things about me :)
Hello my name is Sofi and I’m 15 years old. This blog was made to give some opinions about books (mainly catcher in the rye), to start I will introduce myself. Growing up was normal and fun but I can’t explain why I never paid too much attention to things that happened around me like other kids. I guess I just lived my life, but if I have to be honest, I really don’t know why. I never had the best grades too, I really didn’t care about them, but now I do care a lot about them. It has gotten to the point where I never think I’m doing enough effort. Most of the time I spend my time studying or playing video games even if my dad says that girls don’t “normally” play with them, which is an idea that I don’t understand because you can’t tell somebody that they need to play with something special just for their gender. Now in the present you usually hear adults saying to think about your life after school and stuff, but I really don’t like to think about the future because it scares me, but for now my only goal is to have a great job that is not about staying in an office all day and that doesn’t make me end up like those poor adults that work all day and are always sad and grumpy… It makes me sad to think about them because I can’t imagine what they have to go through to end in that state. My personality is normal I guess, but I don’t know why sometimes I tend to cry about everything or get mad at everything. Thinking of it, that description does not make my personality sound normal...

Formative 2
What does the catcher in the rye mean? When Holden says he wants to be the catcher in the rye he means that he would like to be the one who catches little kids when they get to close to the cliff when no one else is around and I heard it's a kind of metaphor that means he wants to protect their innocence. I think it's important for him to achieve this because I think that he's trying to protect them from ending up like him with depression and stuff he wants them to be innocent like Phoebe with her record that is a symbol of innocence and because she is the one that makes Holden happy after he hates everyone.

independent practice informal
Hello J.D Salinger, I’m writing this because I liked your book. I think that Holden is a very interesting character, but the size of the letter in the book is awful and you feel like you’re reading for hours. In some chapters there is plenty of unnecessary and boring information that you could remove so at least it feels a little shorter and some of your readers don’t get bored. Another problem is that the story is very boring and it just gets interesting when Holden finally leaves his school after doing nothing for like 6 chapters or more. Also, Holden drives me crazy because he starts saying he will do something and then he doesn’t, he also starts horsing around and takes like 3 chapters to finally do something important because maybe he is dumb.

Independent practice
Dear J.D Salinger
I must say that I am enjoying your book very much. In my opinion the character of Holden is very interesting and funny, but I still think that the size of the letter is too tiny and makes the reading process more difficult and long. In some parts of the book I feel like you could remove the unnecessary information that does not contribute to the story so it does not feel so long and readers can feel it is a pleasant read. One problem of the book is that the story does not get interesting before Holden leaves the school which can be bad because many readers like to feel that the story catches their attention from the beginning. Something to add is that Holden can make you feel stressed when he says he will do something and he does not, or when he starts “horsing around” as he says, also when he gets stuck on doing something and you just want the story to continue.

Teenagers do have the same problem as the main character because we are on a similar age and we think in a similar way. We all think in a rude way about others and we can all struggle with school rules.

My name is Sofi and I am 15 years old. Growing up was normal and fun. I never payed to much attention to things that happened around me, I just lived my life. I don't do much, I usually spend my time studing or playing games, I still don't know how will my future be and I'm kid of scared of it. I hope to study something interesting and not complicated so I don't end up like those adults that are angry all day and don't have time for themselves. My personallity is normal, I guess. I get angry really quickly sometimes.
