Sri Lanka held its first mass funerals on Tuesday for victims of the Easter Sunday attacks, a string of bombings at churches and hotels that has left a nation in mourning. The death toll rose to 321 people since the first blasts.

In Negombo, about 20 miles north of the capital, Sri Lankans gathered at St. Sebastian’s church after going through body checks. Security forces stood guard at the edges of the crowd, protecting men and women who sang solemn hymns through tears. Each casket was brought to a plot of land to be buried. Flowers, candles and white crosses adorned the fresh graves.

At the Cinnamon Grand hotel in the capital, Colombo, a spokesperson tells NPR that staff held a private funeral with religious leaders from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu and Muslim communities — Sri Lanka’s main religious groups.

There were 15 guests and five staff members who died in the hotel’s restaurant. One of the employees was not working, the spokesperson says. Instead, T.A.A. Yaheya was celebrating his birthday with his family. His wife and child survived.

“We need to say our goodbyes,” the spokesperson said. “There is a sense of sadness and loss.”

On top of everything else, it’s genuinely offensive for them to just sit there and wax poetic about the civil war, and how SADLY, OH SO SADLY, Sri Lanka will never be free of its violent past *cue heartbreaking violin music*. After that nutjob drove his lorry into people in France, nobody actually said “You know what, Marseille’s sort of a shit city and people get murdered there every day, so” (which they maybe should have, btw, because if anyone in the media or government cared about anything happening outside Paris, we wouldn’t be in this mess rn). But somehow, whenever non-white people Do The Thing, all subtlety goes out the window and the conversation becomes Eh, it’s what they’re like.

Anyway: I don’t want to claim I know any profound truth, because we’ll have to wait for an investigation and I may be dead wrong about who’s behind these disgusting and cowardly attacks, anyway, but still - it’d be nice if people stopped pretending Islam is all the same and all equally valid. Wahhabi Islam (which, I’m sorry, is not valid in any way and is propagated by one of the worst regimes the world has ever seen) came to Sri Lanka in the 1970s, piggy-backing on the oil boom and new trade ties between Colombo and Riyadh. There were concerns pretty much immediately, because to Wahhabi Islam, local Sri Lankan Islam (Sufism) is basically worse than anything (Sufis. listen. to. music.), and predictably, the community started to splinter and fight. This included fatwas, murders, intimidation, arson - and even desecration of corpses. And next, the usual playbook we’ve seen in other Asian, African and European countries: the Saudi money raining like Murgo red gold on those communities - the charities, the cultural centres, the scholarships to study in the Middle East, the free mosques. Meanwhile, the UN mostly blabbered on about ‘freedom of religion’ and insisted local authorities should do more to accomodate Wahhabi Muslims - whether they were influenced by Saudi officials or genuinely thought they were doing something decent, it’s hard to know.

Truth is, Saudi Arabia is still the West’s darling because a) oil and b) they oppose Iran. That’s it. Everything else, from their appalling record on human rights to their heavy involvement in terror attacks all over the world, has been swept under the carpet. And now Israeli PM Netanyahu is getting all chummy with them, they will be even harder to oppose. So as a short do and don’t:

please be aware this is a problem

please support Saudi dissidents

please question your government’s friendship and deals with Riyadh 

please vote for candidates who take a stand

please learn to see Islam as a plural community

but also

please don’t drag the Jews into this one (I’ve seen the usual theories that Saudis are actually Jews out to destroy the world and come on)

venting about sri lanka

Social media is still blocked in Sri Lanka, but not tumblr, so I feel I can vent a bit here… I never liked this government nor voted for them but regardless of that, the behaviours of our President, PM, cabinet and Defence Secretary for this tragedy is such unbelievable disgusting shit that I just can’t. …yesterday watching the news, I literally almost threw up in my mouth watching the ministers at the cabinet press conference irreverent and irresponsible behaviour trying to avoid blame and I still can’t wrap my brains around the unbelievably horrible ‘dont care, didnt care’ interview the Defence Secretary gave to a journalist. The stupid President has still not addressed the nation, although today is declared a national day of mourning. I disliked the current government and oh god did my heart sink when the incomptant buffoon of a Defence Secretary was appointed recently…but this is just beyond basic human decency. Our former President knew how to do his job, and showed that these past few days, rushing to comfort the victims in hospital within the hour of the bombings (our current president was on a trip abroad despite apparent existence of security warnings of an Easter attack and our current PM was apparently on holiday in Sri Lanka and waited 5 hours to post a lackluster message on Twitter!!!) - and in 2009 our former Defence Secretary (the former Presidents brother) defeated a terrorist organization and won a war that that all international experts insisted was unwinnable and was super competant. And then they went on to try rebuild the country, and its their efforts that we were still enjoying peace and prosperity till this weekend. Nobody is perfect, they were not saints and made mistakes and wrong decisions. But liberals and neo-liberals here and in the West hated them for being strong, independent leaders and even now are doing everything they can to undo their achievements and prevent them from winning the next elections even though they are again popular with the people. I feel like crying and god I miss those guys so much. This current government gutted our intelligence services and demoralised our security forces in order to pander to various other groups. The opposition has actually been warning for years on the rise of new terrorist groups, including Islamic terror cells, but this disgusting government covered up, played down and now messed up the specific warnings big time, because they didnt bloody care at all, ruining the country and with such horrific loss of life and injuries. The current PM is supposedly whining (according to a minister) that the intelligence people dont trust him but that is probably because he has currently jailed a whole bunch of them and previously when he was PM during the war he blew the cover of our special undercover officers embedded with the LTTE terrorists, had a cease-fire and removed preventive security, allowing the LTTE to travel freely over the country and kill over 100 intelligence officers in broad daylight assassinations. Thats the kind of treasonous people in power today. I am crying and so disgusted. I was dreading and sort of expecting these utterly vile incompetants would allow something like this to happen - either the re-emergence of the LTTE or Islamic terror cells, so I was not 'surprised’ by the Easter suicide bombings cos I was dreading it, but I am still emotionally devastated at the horror.

The Christchurch shooting in which 49 people died was the biggest news in the world, and I don’t want to compare and make out it’s a numbers game but the fact that that got so much attention and 290 PEOPLE KILLED has gotten so little really makes me think that the news only cares and people only care when a tragedy occurs in a Western country or when they can use the crisis to further their political and social agenda. The fact that 290 people have been killed in attack targeted to kill as many as possible in a place of worship is despicable, and we cannot keep ignoring the extreme violence which is being carried out by religious extremists across the world, and we can’t keep ignoring the religious origins and validation of this hate.
