I know we all agree that Yusuf is an ARTIST and a connoisseur in all things art/poetry/culture but I have a headcannon that I can't let go of. What if Joe is actually a terrible artist and Nicky is just indulging him because he loves him so much. Like this man will lock himself away for hours on end, leave his little studio covered in paints and charcoals. He has the concentration of an eagle and the execution of a koala high on eucalyptus.

He spends years perfecting his craft. He goes to art school at least once per century. He has rubbed elbows with the greats. And yet his art hasn't improved much from the cave drawings he started doing in the 12th century.

Yusuf accidentally invented cubism in 1907

Nicky encourages Joe. He goes to the market and will trade an extra loaf of bread for parchment. He buys rare stones and exotic flowers so that they can be ground into deep pigments for painting, as Yusuf expressed wanting to perfectly capture the Maltese sunset.

Every portrait of Nicky, Andy, and Booker look exactly the same, except for Nicolo's mole. The group has learned to ask what the picture is, after one too many wrong assumptions.

Nicky is very protective of his husband's art. He got into a fistfight with Paul Gaugin, after he insulted one of Yusuf's landscapes. Nicky was grateful for the democratization of art that came with Contemporary Art. He shows Yusuf works by Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Keith Haring. Yusuf's art has finally found its place in time, and an audience who appreciates it. One of his stick figures ends up online thanks to Nile and becomes the template for a meme. The team doesn't know until they are in a hipster bar just outside of Camdan, and a barista walks up wearing a t-shirt with Joe's drawing and the text [I'm going to live forever] emblazoned on the back with rhinestones. Everyone is surprised, but Nicky is fucking beaming. He tells everyone with ears that his husband is a famous artist. He finds the barista's shirt on Etsy and buys one for every member of the team. He sends Copley a Christmas card with the entire team wearing their shirts cuddled up on the couch.
