They're wanting to change the definition of water to see which water would qualify under the Clean Water Act...I wish I was making this up.
What this means, in layman's terms, is that not all water or wetlands would be under environmental protections, so some could legally be dumped in, scraped out of, or otherwise harmed.
The comment period for this is pretty short (just a few days left!) so please submit comments asking for ALL water to be protected.

DOGE just froze funding to vital Federal and Indigenous conservation programs devoted to supporting the very delicate and tenuous existence of the black-footed ferret.
I fell in love with these animals as a kid traveling to our National Parks. Their rarity and ferocity made me sharply aware, even as a child, of just how much of a responsibility we have toward our environment. I can't bear the thought of them being a fucking casualty of Trump and Musk.

Look at them! They do war dances.

What makes me sad about the kataang kids, specifically Bumi, is the fact they went formal military with him rather than him being a part of the Southern Water Tribe's or investing in its warrior culture? His personality is annoying too, yeah. Idk. Like Bumi has an age gap with his sibs and most of his living family at (at the time) outside his bender parents... was his non bender uncle and grandfather, both warriors in their own right! There's angst found in pacifist father vs a son wanting to engage with his culture's warrior side, the conflict of "of course you should explore all your options, it's your right" and aang slowly realizing there's thresholds he cannot connect with, similar to Bumi being a non-bender locks him out of certain connections that his siblings have :(
But then they made him like that. I want him vaporized. Why is he part of a neocolonial system? Hit him with a rock!
I like how Kya feels like a fun blend of upbringing, opting the monk's nomadic lifestyle while clearly incorporating her heritage as a water bender. And Tenzin as a kid, from the comics, is surprisingly hot headed / strong sense of Being Right and I delight in that because that's such a littlest sibling thing & Katara coded (though Katara had the merit of Being Right and is right ✅️ 😀).
Like their kids could've been interesting but 🫠🫠🫠 I like reading fics trying to fix this bc there are some that actually explore the hurdles of being two individuals who are the last of their people's bending culture... kinda trying to figure it out (or creating new traditions!) And then their first kid is a nonbender, navigating *that* ontop of Hey Aang had a very non-traditional child upbringing and Katara lost her mother early on & her father was gone in her crucial years of development! 🧍♂️and they're like in their early 20s. This is a train wreck. I'm surprised they stayed together and went on to have more kids 😭🤚 and I enjoy kataang (or my altered version of it in this brain)
yeah, like you say, i genuinely don't think the approach they took with the kataang monogamous marriage nuclear family 3 kids (white picket fence) in lok makes any sense at all for their characters, but people don't tend to question it (unless they're against the ship themselves, but even then they just promote the same formula with a different set of variables) because that paradigm goes so unquestioned in our heteropatriarchal culture. like i don't actually have a problem with kataang in a vacuum, and i think a lot of their relationship does work well, but the way their relationship is executed and framed across the narrative (not only in lok, but also in atla) plays into these implicit patriarchal norms that don't even make sense for their characters at all. like, if you dare to question why aang would participate in the nuclear family structure despite a core tenet of his character being his desire to maintain his cultural values despite his violent cultural dispossession and temporal displacement, shippers will be like "uhhhhh i don't know maybe because he UHHH loves KATARA and wants to BE WITH HER FOREVER and HAVE KIDS WITH HER???? because they uhhhhh LOVE EACH OTHER??????" as if you're a fucking moron if you suggest that love and monogamous marriage are not mutually inclusive concepts unless you're operating from a very specific, socially constructed framework.. like, okay lol.
as far as their kids in lok go, i'm not opposed in theory to them having a nonbending son who feels insecure about being a nonbender to such powerful parents – in theory, that could be conceptually interesting. but the show seems to agree with his insecurities? the narrative genuinely frames him as useless and less worthy than his waterbender and airbender siblings.... until he develops airbending at least, and then and only then can he be accepted as his father's son... it's really fucking weird and kind of disgusting??? i get that they're trying to present him as a parallel to sokka (with kya, the middle child, being the katara of the trio, and tenzin being aang... if only in aesthetics) but sokka is worldly not because he's a nonbender, but despite his adherence to his own cultural traditions and values. he is very deeply connected to his roots, while still making room for other traditions and worldviews that he synthesizes and adopts over the course of his journey. whereas bumi is someone who should have even more reason to feel connected to his mixed heritage as the child of genocide survivors who sacrificed so much so that he could grow up in a more peaceful and just world. while sokka is a warrior not only out of cultural tradition but out of necessity, there is literally no reason for bumi to join a neocolonial military, and this choice spits on the legacy of his pacifist father and anti-imperialist revolutionary mother. and on top of that, he also just has. a really awful personality. like just dogshit rancid vibes. bumi the annoying ass rootless cosmopolitan. lol. lmfao even.
