Expanding on my other post about Shen [Yuan] Qingqiu wearing his hair in the Dead Anime Mom side ponytail: SQQ just keeps on planting death flags without even realizing it, especially of the Fridged Woman variety, and Shang Qinghua is pulling out his hair over it.

a quick psa to anyone recently getting into greek mythology and is a victim of tumblr and/or tiktok misconceptions:

-there is no shame in being introduced to mytholgy from something like percy jackson, epic the musical or anything like that, but keep in mind that actual myths are going to be VERY different from modern retellings

-the myth of medusa you probably know (her being a victim of poseidon and being cursed by athena) isn't 100% accurate to GREEK mythology (look up ovid)

-there is no version of persephone's abduction in which persephone willingly stays with hades, that's a tumblr invention (look up homeric hymn to demeter)

-as much as i would like it, no, cerberus' name does not mean "spot" (probably a misunderstanding from this wikipedia article)

-zeus isn't the only god who does terrible things to women, your fav male god probably has done the same

-on that note, your fav greek hero has probably done some heinous shit as well

-gods are more complicated than simply being "god of [insert thing]", many titles overlap between gods and some may even change depending on where they were worshipped

-also, apollo and artemis being the gods of the sun and the moon isn't 100% accurate, their main aspects as deities originally were music and the hunt

-titans and gods aren't two wholly different concepts, titan is just the word used to decribe the generation of gods before the olympians

-hector isn't the villain some people make him out to be

-hephaestus WAS married to aphrodite. they divorced. yes, divorce was a thing in ancient greece. hephaestus' wife is aglaia

-ancient greek society didn't have the same concepts of sexuality that we have now, it's incorrect to describe virgin goddesses like artemis and athena as lesbians, BUT it's also not wholly accurate to describe them as aromantic/asexual, it's more complex than that

-you can never fully understand certain myths if you don't understand the societal context in which they were told

-myths have lots and lots of retellings, there isn't one singular "canon", but we can try to distinguish between older and newer versions and bewteen greek and roman versions

-most of what you know about sparta is probably incorrect

-reading/waching retellings is not a substitute to reading the original myths, read the iliad! read the odyssey! i know they may seem intimidating, but they're much more entertaining than you may think

greek mythology is so complex and interesting, don't go into it with preconcieved notions! try to be open to learn!

breaking my silence i dont think shen jiu is the most mischaracterized svsss character. not even shen yuan. i think the character people butcher most is yue qingyuan because that man just went "i'll half heartedly tell you to be less mean to your disciple, but i'll never actually use my authority as sect leader to step in and stop the abuse everyone knows about because i feel guilty about our past. in fact i will publicly defend you against allegations of abuse that i know are true." and then he gets dumbed down to a gentle sweet himbo who never did anything wrong

In Fanfiction, Shen Jiu usually falls for sweet shixiong Shen Yuan, but what about feral internet troll Shen Yuan?

Disciple: Head Disciple Shen should watch who he associates with. I've heard that Shen Jiu has been going behind the sects back to fuck whores

Shen Yuan: Well if Shen-shidi is fucking your mother, then maybe she'll end up giving birth to a better son!

telemachus being so happy that his dad is back for so many reasons and one of them being that he thinks he can finally have someone on his side whenever he and his mom disagree but odysseus turns out to be a “listen to your mom” type of husband

telemachus: hey i’m going out for a swim at the river tonight

The more I think about Shen Yuan the more I object to the "he's the nice Shen Qingqiu"

Yes he's nice to the Peak Lords

Yes he's nice to Luo Binghe

Because he likes them

He comes into the role of Shen Qingqiu already thinking of Yue Qingyuan as his big brother and excited to meet Liu Qingge and Luo Binghe (to different extents)

He basically slices Ming Fang with a knife and only stays nice to him after he unlocks OOC because he realise Ming Fang is actually fine when he's not near Luo Binghe and he realises he has the power to influence to him to stop being such a dick

He's nice to Ning Yingying because she's a wife he didn't mind but he's also really dismissive and rude towards her in his head (and all the wives tbh) but he knows how to be polite outwardly

But outside of his little circle that he has already determined he likes? He can be and is mean

Like yeah he thought Shang Qinghua was the original goods when he was tossing demon head spiders at his supposed unconscious form but still he was TOSSING DEMON HEAD SPIDERS AT SOMEONE BECAUSE HE DISLIKED HIM

Like he keeps to convention and he's not rude without reason to new people but he if he doesn't like someone he's an asshole. Most of it is internal because it has to be but when he's Plant Shen he's taunting and snide and acts so fucking weird

Even with Airplane! They are sort of friends but he's a rude little bitch to him! (Which Airplane enjoys)

Shen Yuan is fairly polite as Shen Qingqiu because he is playing an immortal master but mostly because he's usually surrounded by people he actually likes

And he's not as aggressive with strangers as Shen Jiu because he's not working off of Shen Jiu's PTSD

But their baseline is both thorny assholes who nursed on haterade

Shen Yuan just sneakier. HE BEAT UP THE BAI ZHAN DISCIPLES WHO BEAT UP HIS BINGHE BY TRICKING LIU QINGGE TO DO IT FOR HIM

Shen Jiu will tell you he hates you and wants you dead

Shen Yuan will be polite to your face but will dox you online and spread rumours about you that somehow can't be traced back to him

No PJO headcanon got me in a tighter chokehold than Percy being Rhea's lookalike and Jason being Kronos' lookalike.

The Big Six mixed feelings about them, the uncanny feeling of seeing your parents in kids that look up to you

Jason doing everything to make Zeus proud, but nothing will ever be enough to get his attention and care because he'll always have the face of the person his father hates the most

But then, Percy is the mini Rhea, so even though Zeus hates Percy by default (because that's Poseidon's spawn), he can't stop but paying attention to whatever Percy is doing ALL THE TIME, because he looks like the person he loved the most in his life (before he became everything she despised)

Also, yeah, very nice Percy looks like mom 🥰🥰🥰 hey 🤨 wasn't mom the one to trick dad and ultimately start his downfall??? Maybe we should worry about that 🤔

Hera!!!!! Zeus gave her his DIY version of their father, and he's a mortal that she can rule as much as she likes. The emotional confusion of it all. And, hey, Poseidon just made a DIY Rhea? Yup, she's stealing it from him. Yay, time to play dolls with mom and dad, literally the closest thing she'll ever got from bonding time with her parents.

-an emo kid from the 1930s who again helped save the world and is also a tartarus survivor (TWICE)
