Witches For Sudan 🇸🇩

(You do NOT have to be a witch to participate or even occult. Absolutely anyone is welcomed to join!)

Forget that love or money spell you had planned, I am making a plea to action from all witches/pagans/occult practitioners. This is my open letter to you:

On Sunday, June 16th, at sundown in your location light a candle for Sudan in the colors of red, green, white, or black. For those of you who cannot, say a simple prayer or do whatever you do. I don’t care what your action or specific intent is. Pray for their safety. That the word gets out. That the violence ends. For healing. Pray for one thing or all of it. To god, gods, universe, nature, energy, thin air, it doesn’t matter because the next part is just as important. Then I urge you to come to Tumblr &/or any social media and make a post about Sudan, use #witchesforsudan in the tags. This is how we will be seeing eachother. Feel free to repost on other websites! Just get the word out.

These people are facing atrocities in silence. This need goes beyond your aesthetic or blog theme. Reblog. Reblog. Reblog.

Please help me spread the word and get this out to as many people as possible! I dont know if it’ll help, but they can’t afford for us not to try.

ii. perhaps hestia can be found in the woman who runs the homeless shelter for women. perhaps in her wrinkled hands which knead dough over and over again to feed those without. perhaps in her eyes, which age every time another girl comes in with a hijab torn off, or her skin bruised, or her home taken from her. 

iii. perhaps athena can be found in the women who invent a new world. in the way that their computers blink as they find ways to reshape the universe. perhaps in the stars, which they will be the first to fine. perhaps in the professor of science, the woman who taught her children to be smarter than her. perhaps in the books which she writes, or the podium which she carves for herself.

iv. perhaps demeter can be found in the gardens which the caretaker in the retired community tends to. perhaps in the soil and the seeds and the stems and the little green sprout. perhaps she can be found in the girls who tend to fields of daisies, or in the girls who tend to fields of corn. perhaps in the songs the earth sings, or in the girls who still know the language.

Offerings aren’t nice tokens, and gods aren’t vending machines.

A lot of people have heard the metaphor with Nice Guys™️ and how they feel entitled to women’s time and bodies. “I’m not a vending machine you put nice tokens in until sex falls out.” It’s a really good metaphor and I think we can take pieces of it and apply it to Polytheist worship.

Occasionally I’ll see people talk about gods as if they’re tools. “Just give them some offerings and they’ll do whatever you want.” Their value only being measured by what they can do to ‘serve’ you, and once it’s no longer relevant that deity gets tossed aside or aggressively bashed. I find this to not just be disrespectful to these deities, but also to their followers. How dare someone try and reduce and ridicule what someone has dedicated themselves to honoring? (Not to mention the arrogance that comes with thinking someone can control a god, but that’s another barrel of worms.) We aren’t entitled to them and everything they are because we were nice.

Offerings aren’t payment for their hire. They’re not nice tokens you put in until miracles fall out. In my personal path, offerings exists as thanks; I’m paying them BACK for all the great stuff they already do whether I’m around or not. And if I want to ask for even more? I’ll offer to try and remind them they like me so that they may choose to help on their own. But I’d never want to fool myself into thinking they don’t have their own agency, or that they only exist as tools.

Spotting Alt-Right Imagery on Nordic Blogs

I’ve been getting a lot of asks/messages lately from folks who want to practice Norse paganism and join the heathen community but are worried about white supremacist blogs. That’s totally valid - there’s a lot of them and some of them are well hidden under “aesthetic norse” blogs. So, I wrote up a little lists of indicators to look out for and avoid. Please keep in mind there are many more symbols and names/titles that could be included, I am just focusing on the Norse aspect.

Odinist/Wodenism/Wotanist - Oidinist is most often the term norse leaning white-supremacists lean towards. The term “Odinist” was first used as a self-descriptor by Alexander Rud Mills, an Australian Nazi sympathizer who founded an Odinist church in 1934. The name was carried on by Else Christensen and her Odinist Fellowship; Christensen’s newsletter, The Odinist, contained more far right-wing political content than religious content. If you go the official Odinists website(link) you will find they support many white-only groups like the Asatru Folk Assembly. The Holy Nation of Odin is a church that is run from a maximum-security cell in California and is only open to whites.

Volkish/Folkish -  Volksfront is a hybrid racist skinhead gang/neo-Nazi group that started in the Pacific Northwest in the 1990s. It’s still a very active group and only alt-right would really use this terminology.

“ —often termed “folkish” within the community—by viewing Heathenry as an ethnic or racial religion with inherent links to a Germanic race that should be reserved explicitly for people of Northern European descent or white people in general”. 

Not to be confused with folklorist/folklore heathens who practice heathenry because of Scandinavian folklore(i.e. disir, dwarves, etc.).

HH or 88 -  88 is a white supremacist numerical code for “Heil Hitler.” H is the eighth letter of the alphabet, so 88 = HH = Heil Hitler. One of the most common white supremacist symbols.

The number is frequently combined with another white supremacist numeric code, 14(shorthand for the so-called “14 Words” slogan: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children”) in the form of 1488, 14/88, 14-88, or 8814. - ADL

Brosatru - I’m mostly adding this because it used to be a popular alt-right subreddit for “Asatru” practitioners that got removed. I’ve still seen it referenced in other pagan subreddits and some twitter profiles!

General keywords to look out for: heritage, ethnic, aryan, ethno-nationalism, nationalist, tribe

Use reasonable doubt for runes and imagery:

Othala. While not actually/originally a symbol of hate but a rune for family/ancestry, Othala has been appropriated by the alt-right regardless and should be judged by the context it’s seen in. It is frequently used in nazi marches, merch, and their websites. The U.S. National Socialist Movement replaced the swastika with the Old Norse Othala rune, which was previously used on an SS infantry flag in World War II. So if you see a blog with a red banner and a black Othala in the middle, just know it’s a replacement for the swatsika. It’s been

Algiz. It has been adapted by the far right as a “Life Rune”. Used in the “Free American Rally” and “National Alliance” and also used in the “Volksfront” logo. Like Othala it is used to replace the Swatsika in imagery where it’s illegal - it is  not used as frequently as Othala.

Huginn and Muninn. “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, VA featured two flags with Odinns ravens. Here’s the twist: some white supremacist groups claim the Raven flag was flown when Leif Erikson landed in North America in the year 1000 and thus is the “pure European: flag of the nation.” And for some white supremacists, according to David Perry of the University of Minnesota, “the concept of Vinland asserts a historical claim over North America, stretching from the northeast coast to the Pacific Northwest. They use the myth of Vinland to position themselves as righteous defenders in the wars of race and religion they believe are coming.”

Valknut -  It is often considered a symbol of the Norse god Odin. Some white supremacists, particularly racist Odinists, have appropriated the Valknot to use as a racist symbol. Often they use it as a sign that they are willing to give their life to Odin, generally in battle. It was also seen on many shields at the Charlottesville, VA march. Many pagans may also use this symbol, so one should carefully examine it in context rather .

Tiwaz. Free America Rally is a loosely-coordinated network of white supremacists who hold protests and rallies on white supremacist-related themes. The logo for Free America Rally is an amalgam of several runes(Algiz and Uruz).

Mjolnir. This feels horrible to say because I know countless pagans and Marvel fans with Mjolnir necklaces/tattoos. However, I have also encountered many alt-right accounts with a BFG(Bound for Glory) banner or icon.

Additionally, I would highly suggest going through their follows/likes if you can’t find an obvious answer. Most modern Norse pagans who aren’t anti alt-right make it known in their bios but you an do further digging if necessary.

Apollo has the worst love life-

– I’m honestly tired of this trend and hearing this again and again from people who know no more than Daphne and Hyacinthus and probably Cassandra. To people who say this: guess what? You’re so wrong.

“Most of Apollo’s lovers were turned into plants or flowers or were cursed” this is so inaccurate! Only three of his lovers turned into vegetation. And one got cursed - Cassandra and tbh she kinda deserved it because she was a little greedy and deceived Apollo and earned her curse (it’s only in Roman mythology that Apollo cursed her for not fuckin him. In Greek version, it’s because she broke her promise. Greek & Roman versions shouldn’t be mixed up!) and that’s it. There ends Apollo’s “worst” love life where his lovers suffer because of him.

But why don’t people talk about Hyacinth’s resurrection? Or how Admetus and Cyrene became immortal because of him? There are so many other lovers, like Rhoeo, Euadne, Corycia, Ourea, Branchus, Helenus and so many more. He also took care of his lovers when they were pregnant and eased their birthpain/sent someone to help, even took complete responsibility of the child sometimes.

Yeah he wasn’t the best or the most respectful, but most of the times he was as respectful as a god can afford.

How can you even call him the worst?? I’m so disturbed by this tendency of Tumblr users
