the end & the beginning

“history will remember you differently than we do,” the solemn words slash their way inside me, nestling themselves within my insecurities. i can barely meet antonio in the eyes. we both know this could be the last time we ever saw each other. he was my brother in this war, the one i never had but always wished for. a rare soul whom i was willing to give my life to and knew it’d be kept safe. then there was allita, who despite being a mere few feet away from us wouldn’t even dare make contact or risk losing her focus from the bigger task at hand; there was no time for grief.

“i thought history and you go way back, that you have a special way of talking to one another,” my joke falls flat, and antonio shakes his head.

“even I can’t fail to hold history accountable for its inaccuracies. i’d say i know better than anyone when it’s falsely interpreted or written...which adds the burden of having to correct it when wrong, and no one likes hearing that their facts are wrong…”

i can’t argue or joke my way out of this conversation. el archivero knew better than anyone how to read between the lines; he saw patterns most of us had become too brainwashed to decipher. even those of us who managed just to scratch the surface of the propaganda we’d been spewed, there was still a lot of unlearning to be done. “in many important revolutions, the state painted those who were correct as radical, dangerous individuals… because they threatened to disrupt the pyramid of power.”

here we were, one of the many millions standing at the base of it all, but the few wanting to tumble it all down. i often wondered how different his and allita’s life would have been if they hadn’t joined the movement. their rebellious spirit would quickly burn out in any government office, and their interest in documents and history was unmatched by even the best archaeologists in the world. antonio was a living archive and allita, the glue that connected us all together: our forger.

there was no document he could find that allita could not replicate, and the two of them together were far more dangerous than the mouthpieces like myself or marcos. born to different mothers but the same father, it was almost fate when their paths crossed in the ‘criminal’ world (anything anti-government would be deemed so, after all) in their early twenties. our cause had the fortunate luck of having them on our side. their skills would prove helpful for getting our hands on essential pieces of our history, as well as having many falsified travel documents to help us move freely as the state began to crack down on us…right now, allita worked tirelessly on what could possibly be the very last passport of the state as we knew it: in due time nation-alliances would become less critical than people-directed ones…but that’s a story for another time, the end and beginning some would say.
