“ JAMES, you slut, how dare you?” Sirius shrieked from across the room, handing his drink to whatever sucker he was previously conversing with. Though he initially hadn’t been enjoying himself, the drinks and spotting James managed to lighten his mood and bring out the best worst in him. “You brought a date?!” his voice rose above the crowd once more as he walked across the room, not giving a damn about the looks he received.

“Not that I’m complaining, at all, but I can’t help but wonder why the charity decided on Hogwarts of all places?” the words slipped out as the two arrived at the ball, eyes scanning the crowd out of mere habit. “It does bring back memories, the good and the bad, but surely the Rosier family has a home to host a party in?” Kingsley rambled on, his mind ahead of him as he’d begun questioning the families’ motives long ago. Sure, he’d never admit it aloud in the current crowd of people, but his expression spoke for him to those that know him.

Inside, Evan was on edge, hating being back at Hogwarts more than ever, with each passing second. Everything reminded her of the person she used to be, the family she used to have. It didn’t help that she was still recovering from a run in with her dear brother, but still she refused to cower and hide away in the way she used to. So, instead, she dressed boldly, drinking the fancy champagne offered at any chance she had, mingling with the occasional person and putting on the facade she’d played so well. Some company she enjoyed more than others, but the deception of it all was exhausting. All she hoped, was that she didn’t have to run into two people that night, and she’d continue to succeed in her ploy. 

But, as she stepped outside for a breath of fresh air, hoping to go unnoticed, the sound of footsteps set her off, “ This champagne isn’t strong enough for the amount of smiles I’ve forced, so if you’ve come for one, I’m fresh out of fucks to give when it comes to keeping up appearances.” At this point, she could care less about who it was. “My wand however, is more than willing to make an exception.”

Sirius didn’t feel himself that evening, not only was he dressed down in lazy fashion for him, but he was avoiding the crowds. He, unlike his usual self within the halls of Hogwarts was keeping a low profile and hanging toward the corner with his gaze on his half-finished drink. Still, there was an itch eating away at him, a desire to excuse himself from the mayhem of the Great Hall and explore the castle, get up to mischief, for old times’ sake, but he couldn’t, not with who was there. 

“If I have to force one more smile, I’m going to start throwing hexes,” Sirius cursed under his breath in warning as he caught glimpse of shoes nearing him, desperately hoping it was James to whisk him away from his misery. “I’ve never been so miserable at this-” he began as he raised his head, the desperation managing to trick his mind into believing it was James, but never had he been so disappointed. But “You,” was all he said, a mixture of guilt and disgust lacing the word.

"This might be one of the reasons why we suck so hard at relationships,” Charlie chuckled, unable to help glancing over at the woman in question. “Still, it’s never too late, if she was even a little fun or is this your way of giving me a pre-warning to test my luck elsewhere?”

I’ve tried, but it never comes close.” Evan wasn’t anti house elf by any means, but they hated the way most purebloods, her family included treated them. If anything, she considered the house elves in the Rosier household to be more like parents than either of her own.

stepping back into her shop, marina almost drops her package of sweet treats and savoury breads upon noticing she wasn’t alone.  “alastor?” letting her eyes adjust to the musty light of her shop, the herbologist offers her cousin a smile as she places down her grocery shopping upon the closest surface.  “you could have been the victim of a cinnamon swirl to the face if i hadn’t recognised you, cousin.  what do i owe this pleasure?  i thought you were busy down in london?”

Reginald had taken his time to do thorough research when it came to Alastor and those around him, desperately wanting to ensure he didn’t wave any red flags in the process. He needed to keep both a low and believable profile as Alastor, something he’d done well at thus far. Hence why he sought out the woman who he’d learned was Alastor’s cousin, hoping to gain some more insight in the process. 

“I’ve certainly taken worse things to the face than that,” he gave a quiet chuckle, a smile lingering on as he eyed the blonde, trying to get a good read. “Never too busy for family, I had the day off actually.” The irony in Reginald’s statement amused him, though his expression remained pleasant, he was dying inside at the forced kindness. “And was hoping you’d have some time to assist me on something..”

“That oddly enough sounds like an invitation” he said and then looked at Kai but he smiled a little to show that he was not being serious. Maybe Severus should practice on the whole talking to people thing. He had never been the best at reaching out and whenever he did, he said something wrong which caused the other person to run away. It was a shame really as all he ever wanted was to get some friends. People who either thought like him or were completely opposite. “I still need to find a solution for the annoyance in my life. My failure at finishing my book” he muttered.

"Hardly, you'd know if it had been. I’ll admit, though, having another pair of eyes once I get closer wouldn’t be an awful idea but I surely don’t know you well enough to trust you with something so important.” The teasing tone was still clear in their voice, but it had a serious edge to it. There were few people Kai had told about what they were working on, just bits and pieces. “If that’s you’re only annoyance in life, you should consider yourself lucky,” Kai flashed a cheeky smile, glancing back over their shoulder. “What’s it about?”
