Heartstopper Update: steamy scenes & alternate ending

The Heartstopper feature film may have wrapped production, but the cast is still teasing what we can expect when it’s released.

We may have to wait till 2026 for the beloved gay drama, Heartstopper, to return to the streaming service Netflix.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited every time some new information drops.

Earlier this year, the writer of the graphic novels and the TV series, Alice Oseman, said she envisaged the adaptation as a four-season arc.

However, with lead actors Kit Connor and Joe Locke, rising stars continuing to soar, the series will round out its three seasons with a feature-length film titled Heartstopper Forever.

The film will be based on the yet-to-be-released Volume 6 of Oseman’s Heartstopper comics, with a bit of a twist.

In a panel earlier this month, Oseman said that the film, titled Heartstopper Forever, would “diverge from the events of volume six.”

‘I find it really fun and exciting’

Now, don’t panic, this is not like the last season of Game of Thrones.

Oseman said that she had difficulty navigating Nick and Charlie’s story in the final volume, so they took a different approach.

It was expected that the Netflix series would follow how Nick and Charlie deal with Nick’s departure for university.

At the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Oseman gave fans some hints.

“We’ve just finished shooting the movie; it is based on volume six,” she said.

“It’s also based on the Nick and Charlie novella.”

The novella, Nick and Charlie, is set as Nick prepares to move away from the university.

“In the film, I have found a different way to approach this problem.”

” So there is a point in the movie where we slightly diverge from the events of volume six.

“And it takes a slightly different path to get to the ending.

“Which I find really fun and exciting.

“So, even once you read volume six, there will still be quite a few surprises in the movie waiting for you.”

‘We shot quite steamy scenes’

During the first week of filming, actor Kit Conner, who plays Nick, shared some steamy tidbits from set.

“I was doing rugby training today, hence all the mud and lovely stuff – my favourite thing to do,” he said

“Always some kind of throwing myself on the ground.”

“We shot quite a steamy scene yesterday.”

“So again, throwing myself on the ground in a different way.”

Heartstopper Forever focuses on the characters navigating impending adulthood.

When being interviewed by Radio 1, Joe Locke, who plays Charlie, teased that he “can say that it’s a lovely ending.”

“It’s fun, it’s a lot more grown up in a really nice way.”

“These characters, we’ve been growing up with them, and now they’re finally catching up and becoming adults, so it’s a lot of adults.”

Conner has previously shared that he went through an “intense” manscaping regimen in season three of the series.

As he was shirtless “for a good portion of this season” and needed to wax — not shave — his chest every two weeks to play Nick.

That’s a wrap

When talking about the feature film, Oseman has said that “at 18 and 17, Nick and Charlie are hurtling towards their adult lives.”

“Many teenage relationships don’t survive that pivotal moment of change,” she said.

“Are Nick and Charlie a forever love? If they are, why?”

“I want the movie to capture this transitional moment for them as a couple — from teens to adults.

“From teen romance to forever love, from past to future.

“And in doing so, get to the heart of what teenage love can become as adolescence becomes a memory, and what teenage love can mean for people in the overall picture of their lives.”

When filming wrapped on Heartsopper Forever, Oseman wrote, “Day 35. That’s a wrap on the Heartstopper film.”

“I’d never worked in a team in my career before working on the Heartstopper screen adaptation,” she wrote.

“And the Heartstopper shoots have shown me what magic can happen when so many creative minds come together.”

“Heartstopper means the world to me, and it’s always been a little scary to put it into other people’s hands,

“But it’s been met with so much care and passion and dedication and love.

“I’m so thankful to everyone who has been a part of it… so far! Now we begin the edit!!!”

Connor and Locke said goodbye to their characters on social media in their own way.

Heartsopper Forever comes out on Netflix in 2026.
