non-food-related Lent ideas <3
People always ask for these, so I'm making a list today! I'm separating it into two sections, but remember that sometimes the best practices come from combining. If you give up something, ask what you can do with the time/money/energy you now have. I talked a little here about the importance of making specific goals, and here about why we participate in Lent.
Things to give up:
any harmful habit (If this means starting a recovery journey for an addictive or other mental health-related action, please consider seeking out treatment.)
alcohol/drugs/smoking (see above parentheses)
sexual activity
some/all social media (you could delete a couple apps, or set a timer to limit yourself)
TV/video games/another form of casual entertainment
makeup/manicures/another appearance-related routine
Things to start/add:
journaling/art
daily prayer/Bible study practice
attend a worship service if you don't regularly, or commit to attending more
mutual aid/donation
volunteer work
yoga/walking/another physical practice
pick a book to read or subject to research
call someone/write a letter every week
reach out to someone you haven't talked to in a while, especially a relationship that might need forgiveness or conflict resolution
be politically active (join a group, educate yourself, or call representatives)
set aside a time to rest or a full day of rest every week

God and change
change is incredibly hard but in our culture, people are often made fun of. Sitcoms often have a character that is made fun of for having a daily routine and hating change. However, change is also a continued theme throughout the bible. From Moses going from a shepherd to the leader of the Israelites to all of humanity going from innocent to knowledgable but sinful to saved (thanks Jesus) God's loving plan is behind lots of change.
You may have noticed that I made one written post and then just reblogged stuff for a really long time that's because I'm going through a change of my own. I have repeatedly questioned my gender throughout my late teens. Recently this has ramped up and I have come to the realisation that I'm not cis. I don't know what I am yet but my gender is important to my spiritual journey. God has both been supporting me through this change and pushing me to be honest with myself. Change is difficult but with God anything is possible.
In times of change bible stories with themes of strength are helpful. My favourite is daniel in the lion's den. These stories are incredibly powerful because they show that God's love can lead us to places we wouldn't dream of; towards a new future that frees your people or just the gender-neutral bathroom. ; )

This is so fucking funny, apparently “war bad” is liberal propaganda now??? Yes, war IS bad you fucking dipshit.
All Quiet on the Western Front (the original book) was written by a German WWI veteran who was determined to show just how utterly horrifying, disgusting, and senseless the war- and by extension all war- was. The book and its adaptations take great pains to portray the suffering endured by the common soldiers on both sides, who didn't even really want to fight but were manipulated/forced into it by those in power. The book was even banned in Nazi Germany and the author had to flee the country because the Nazis believed the book was “anti-German” and would hamper their war efforts by showing the German people the real horrors of war.
So in some ways I guess history is repeating itself, more right-wing idiots are hating on this brilliant piece of anti-war media 🙄

They force their religion on people on a regular basis, but when you mention that Jesus believed in helping the poor, they suddenly believe that it shouldn't be forced.

At the Shadow s Edge : Shaped like a cone tapering into space, the Earth’s dark central shadow or umbra has a circular cross-section. It’s wider than the Moon at the distance of the Moon’s orbit though. But during the lunar eclipse of November 18/19, part of the Moon remained just outside the umbral shadow. The successive pictures in this composite of 5 images from that almost total lunar eclipse were taken over a period of about 1.5 hours. The series is aligned to trace part of the cross-section’s circular arc, with the central image at maximum eclipse. It shows a bright, thin sliver of the lunar disk still beyond the shadow’s curved edge. Of course, even within the shadow the Moon’s surface is not completely dark, reflecting the reddish hues of filtered sunlight scattered into the shadow by Earth’s atmosphere. via NASA

Let's talk about love
TW; relationships, abuse, long post and of course religion.
Love is talked about in a very specific way in pop culture. Often romantic or familial or platonic ( thank you, sad millennial women). Over exaggerated in both conflict and passion. Mostly at least one kind of abusive. Overall; exciting but bad.
Love is also talked about in a very specific in the Christian Religious institution. Often romantic, familial or for the institution itself. Very intense. Communication is discouraged. More rules than affection. Overall both bad and boring.
Young people who have left the church, both literally and just with their hearts, will often express how bad the view of love inside The Church. However, they will look for a new view of love in pop culture, not realising it's equally toxic just more exciting. They will hop from relationship to relationship trying to preserve a superficial "spark" that is not love but being excited to be in love.
But what does the bible actually say about love? It says this;
"Love is patient, love is kind,
it does not envy or boast,
it is not proud.
It does not dishonour others,
it is not self-seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices in truth.
It always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.
Love never fails."
ALERT;OPINIONS
A lot of us have seen this particular quote on framed pictures and throw pillows but we haven't thought of what it means. While this might just be me I think describe love, not as something we feel or something we do but as a redeeming force that improves us slowly when we accept it into our hearts. Love is a reward for being vulnerable enough to not be alone on every level. While it may be difficult, especially if you haven't had good examples, it literally improves you.
To summarise;
If you make the deliberate decision to make to let someone or something truly know you it literally makes you a better person because of Emotional Gravity.
