Have to say, the way they've put this show together is just so so good. I'm obsessed with the splicing in of real images, the jarring switching back and forth between cuts. I loved that scene in the grocery store where it kept cutting to the speaker and the music got louder. It was all just so disruptive and uncomfortable. It feels difficult to really get a read on how things will appear and what you'll see next, but at the same time repeating images like that has an oddly hypnotic effect? It just feels like a very effective way to sell the strangeness of it all, to make it both visceral and unnatural. That cut to the image of marinated raw chicken and the imagery associated was so effective. When they showed me that real ass image of real ass chicken I felt genuinely disturbed, which is funny because splicing in a picture of chicken in your animation is objectively very funny! But something about it was just so alarming. Like no, this isn't supposed to be here. You're not supposed to be able to show me real images like that. It just feels so *wrong*. It was also really effective in making me actually imagine how sticking your hand in there would feel. So definitely visceral. I was concerned about how well they'd do with this adaptation because I really adore the manga, but my god they've blown in out of the water. Sound is such an important part of the manga and they've absolutely nailed it. That together with the visuals honestly makes this possibly even an improvement over the original manga in my opinion, and that is a very rare thing for an anime to do.

I love how real images are used in TSHD. It’s jarring, it’s unsettling, it’s visceral… it says that something is out of place. It is here. You can experience it. You can reach out and touch it. It can reach out to you. It’s moved on so quickly that you process it only as it’s leaving.
But that’s the question, isn’t it? Can you register an irregularity before it’s already latched on?

The ending of the Summer Hikaru Died anime really fuckin got me. We see so little of the original Hikaru, yet I was so immediately able to tell it was him in the ending. The differences are subtle, but it's so interesting to see them regardless. Part of it is definitely the editing, with the very nostalgic feel and all, but the character animation is also just incredible with how quickly it's able to sell me on the dynamics of these characters. Hikaru feels much more serious while Yoshiki feels much lighter than we ever see him in the present. It really felt like such a gut punch knowing that Hikaru is already gone, and that what replaced him can never truly *be* him. I know the ending is referencing some stuff from the manga I haven't managed to read yet, but even without that context it hit me incredibly hard. Can't remember the last time an ending has made me feel so much.

“You dont even look before you leap.
There is something down there, the base of this massive well going into the dark and freezing cold. Light. Fire. You’re in a throat. And the furnance is burning and the wings are beating. This is the end. This is how it’s going to end.”

their hug meant so much to me :((

Usually I'm totally cool with and enjoy the idealism and optimism of Wind Breaker, I mean it's that kind of show and I know what I signed up for. But man this whole thing with Suzuri didn't sit right with me. It's just so simple. He and GRAVEL don't have money, so they're gonna get jobs, just like that. I suppose there's the implication that they could only get these jobs because of people already inside the street giving them a chance, and so it's the kindness of Kanji and others that will get them opportunities they couldn't have before. But y'know... that still doesn't fix things? There's still this whole area full of people living in terrible poverty. The problem hasn't gone anywhere. I suppose that's the issue with having a character/group's struggle be a systematic injustice, it's much more difficult to cleanly resolve it for anyone but the one the story's about. Who knows, maybe this is all just the recession talking.

[image id: a gif of a low-poly model of golbo from 'zooliminology' over a pale blue background. golbo is a white creature that resembles a borzoi, with a long, thin snout and limbs that gradiate to pale pink. it has a large eye with a stream of tears beneath it. it is laying on its side in a bathtub, which is filled with tall stalks of grass and small flowers that are swaying as though moved by a light breeze. end id]
the golbo is now properly contained
