Regarding the Augustine example, the things he said back then are 100% still applicable today. Socialism is not so new as to require an entirely novel way of thinking in order to quantify its goodness. Ironically, in this particular case st Augustine goes against the main catholic objection to socialism and does not believe in a right to private property. He does, however, believe that it is a necessary evil, an opinion which is surely applicable to modern day thought.
