Billy: Pushes Lucas against a wall. Tells him to stay away from Max. Says "You're dead" after getting a kick to the balls.

ST Fandom: This is... The most evil character I have ever met. Unforgivable. There is no going back from this. He was actually going to kill Lucas. Wow. The fact Billy was assaulted and threatened by his father into finding Max before all of this is no excuse. That has nothing to do with it. The worst human!

Jason: Rallies a lynch mob in Hawkins. Tells Lucas he thought he was "one of the good ones." Attempts to shoot and kill Lucas.

ST Fandom: Y'know at least he's not as bad as Billy. He's just sad his girlfriend died. He's just a sad little boy. Actually, it was Lucas' fault. They were friends. He should have explained it. He was acting really suspicious! There are no racist overtones to lynch mobs or the one of the good ones line.

I absolutely love this idea @someonehelpshit and I've seen people playing around with it. Will like likes metalheads and has a bit of a crush on both Billy and Eddie. On the other hand he thinks Steve is just some guy. Max is throughfully unimpressed by metalheads in general and by her step bro in particular, and also thinks Eddie is a huge dork. On the other hand, she understands quite well why Steve was hawkins' high official heartbreaker. She feels a bit of second hand embarrassment one day they've basically camped on Eddie's trailer while Eddie very excitedly helps Will decorate his first battle jacket with Billy's occasional signs of approval. Dustin is just vibing and honestly happy that another person from the party has picked Eddie as their metal sensei. Somehow Billy is the only one who picks up the vibes, which is just his luck, because he hates with passion being emotionally vulnerable, but also we're talking about a troubled middle schooler, Billy can make an exception (he probably brings Eddie along when he goes to talk to Will for support, for either of them)

why do people think if you like a character it means you think they can do no wrong?

liking a character ≠ excusing their past/awful behaviour.

just because i like billy and think he didn’t deserve to die, because underneath all of that he was, really, just a scared 18 year old boy who’d been a subject of abuse for years and years. a boy who needed help but has instead been villainized his entire life, doesn’t mean i think how he treated max, steve and lucas was okay in any way. because it wasn’t. why do people think all billy stans are incapable of acknowledging his wrong doings?

why was steve let off so easily after using a homophobic slur and bringing up joyce and will against jonathan? on top of just being a complete douchebag.

why was jonathan let off so easily after taking pictures of nancy in her bra when she was about to sleep with steve? not only was he taking pervy pictures, he was taking pervy pictures of a 16 year old which meant those pictures were considered CP.

they both got a chance to change, a redemption arc, and are now some of the most beloved characters in the series. (however personally i’m still iffy about jonathan)

billy, however, was never given a chance to change, instead he was deemed a sociopathic, sadistic 18-year-old up to his death. why was he not given a chance at a redemption arc? i’ll never fully understand why he had to die. he died thinking no one cared enough to want to help him. thinking he deserved everything he got. a mother who left him, a father who abused him, having no support system whatsoever and having to rely on himself.

that’s why i think his character and storyline was very poorly handled. he would’ve been an amazing addition to the group and maybe we could’ve finally gotten to see him and max getting to be like real siblings.

but the suffer brothers are cowards and clearly couldn’t handle such a complex character. not only would it have been another awesome character added to the list, it would’ve shown real abuse victims that they can change and that they deserve to be saved and loved. but all they did was point a big middle finger at them.

“billy wasn’t racist and just didn’t want max to get hurt by anyone because then neil would beat him up” i say into the mic. the crowd boos. i begin to walk off the stage in shame. “no, he’s right!” i hear a voice in the back say. the lights come on. it’s dacre montgomery.

Alright. Billy was a jerk yes. He said some wack ass shit yes, but

He never did or said anything worse than what Steve did in season 1.

He was literally living in his own personal abusive hell.

He had very little positive physical contact with anyone other than sex

He had no one in his corner, even when he was POSSESSED! Not one of the “heroic” rug rays actually tried to help. (If you wanna be a hero, you save EVERYONE, you don’t get to pick and choose favorites)

No he didn’t break a cycle of abuse, he was actively living in it, everyday was a battle of survival.

The only adult he had positive feelings towards, abandoned him. Does anyone realize how BAD it has to get for abandonment to be completely forgotten!? REALLY FUCKING BAD

He was a goddamn CHILD

Not to mention he died saving his sister (whose actions caused his punishments and harm) and one of her friends.

He wasn’t perfect and he wasn’t the nicest person, but he was not evil. He was not this villain with no trace of goodness in him and no chance of redemption.

He was a fucking child and he deserves to be treated as such.

All of his negative traits, were learned behaviors that could have been unlearned. So please

Let’s stop making the active abuse victim and irredeemable, evil monster.

Side Note: if I, as an eighteen year old older sibling, caught my younger sister, after she ran away without telling me and got me fucking hit by my abusive dad, with a bunch of strange boys her age and one MAN OLDER THAN ME, who then LIED TO MY FACE, I’d think some wack ass shit was going on, and if he threw a punch (bc let me remind you Steve swung first) I’d want to beat his ass too. ❤️
