Well, that did track. Sarah had always been⌠weird. Marie didnât know if that was because of the funeral home thing or if the two of them just went hand in hand but⌠yes. Sarah being in the maze on her own sounded very Sarah.
(Not that Marie really knew her all that well. She made it her business to know everyone, of course, but she couldnât really recall a time when sheâd actually had a conversation with the girl. Marie tended not to waste her time on people she didnât deem of her standard, which she was coming to learn was very catty of her, but there was a part of her that simply didnât care.)
ââŚRight.â Marie said slowly. Honestly, she wasnât sure if sheâd rather still be alone in the maze or be with Sarah, but given how Sarah was here, she thought she might as well continue. âI donât suppose you know the way out? If I spend any longer walking around in here I think my heel is going to snap.â
She lifted her right foot, grabbing at the heel and frowning softly.
(~)
This was definitely one of the most nerve wrecking interactions that Sally had had since she had gotten this body. Not for the reasons that all the others had been nerve wrecking: worrying about whether or not Marie would recognize her for a fraud. No.
She wanted Marie to like her. She wanted to be memorable.
At least this gave the perfect opportunity. Save her from a corn field and sheâd lavish Sally with beautiful outfits and a higher status in town.
Sallyâs gaze followed Marieâs down to the heel in question. Designer. Sally knew that right away. A strange pick for a carnival, but Sally wasnât going to say that. Obviously.
âOh, yeah, sure. Uhm, I am pretty sure itâs this way. Donât worry, weâre not super far.â Sally started in the direction of the exit. Or, what she was pretty sure was the exit...

âIâve always been interested in crime, since watching shows like Criminal Minds when I was younger.âÂ
Well, among other things like being a teenage crime fighter, but she didnât want to tell just anyone that. Even though she wasnât ashamed of it, she didnât want to scare this woman away because, contrary to what Kim believed, it wasnât as common as she assumed.
âPlus, thereâs something about investigating something and having all the small things add up to big things then you eventually solve what youâve been investigating,â Kim smiled brightly, thinking of that feeling she had experienced many times and hoped to experience many times more.Â
(~)
âSo, like, have you solved any crimes then?â It sounded like Kim was talking from experience.
Even though she was still in school and didnât seem much older than this body that Sally was invading. Did they let the students solve mysteries? Maybe she was in the wrong major. Not that her stupid dad would ever let her join a major like criminal justice. He was way too paranoid for that. (Sally was pretty sure he was doing plenty of illegla things.)

Jeremy wasnât exactly used to physical contact from Sarah, but he was hardly going to make a big deal out of an innocent little arm touch.Â
âWoah. Like, are you double majoring then, or is one the major and one the minor?â They both sounded like tricky subjects! Perhaps he should just be glad that his parents werenât forcing him to double major in something even worse than his main degree like⌠ugh. Accounting or something.Â
âI was, yeah. I managed to convince my parents to let me live in dorms, at least for this year, so I can get the full experience. I gotta say I like it! Parties, seeing all the different people around, itâs great!â
(~)
Yeah, golden-retriever boy Jeremy would like parties and seeing different people. That was not at all surprising. Just from what Sally had read about the boy in Sarahâs diary.
âI wish I was dorming, my stupid dad wonât let me.â Which is something Sarah would have never said. She loved her dad. Stupid girl. âBut, yes, Iâm double majoring, so I will be on campus a lot, I hope.â

âYeah! Ed and I live on campus, and I think Kyle and Jimmy live in Castle Suites or something. Ferbâs living at home this year. What about you? I feel like I remember hearing you were going to Pride U,â Phineas said, not because he knew Sarah all that wellâ it was just something heâd heard around. And it wasnât really a surprise. Sarah did not seem like the type of person to travel far outside Swynlake for college.
(~)
âI am, though I am not living on campus. My dad wonât let me.â She rolled her eyes at this, kicking a loose knot of dirt, hay, and cornstalk on the ground as they walked.
âBut I went to your party in the dorms. It was fun. I hope the rest of the semester is like that.â

Actually, if Pip had to line up all the white girls in Swynlake and pick the ones that would fall for the Scary Scandinavian White People Cult, Sarah would be at THE top of the list, bless her heart. Followed by Marie Bonfamille, probably.Â
âEmpowering and stupid is my favourite genre,â allowed Pip. âAs is ironic and ridiculous. Honestly, the only way I enjoyed that film was I pretended it was the episode of the Bachelorette, but like, gone very, very wrong. Now thatâs an SNL skit waiting to happen.âÂ
(~)
Sally laughed, because that was funny.
âHa. Maybe I would watch the Bachelorette if it involved more murder,â she joked in return. Though--was it a joke? Mmm. She supposed she could be convinced anyway. It was part of the whole second-chance-at-life thing she was working on.
âDo you have any other questions for me?â she asked, unsure considering they had gotten a little off topic. Not that she minded discussing mayhem and murder, but that didnât necessarily seem like Pipâs vibe.

âFeminism is for everyone, especially marginalized people like, say, a queer Asian man,â came Pipâs quick response.Â
And oh, honey. Oh. She had apparently only started watching movies at 18. Every poor girl had to go through their white girl feminism phase.Â
âAnd actually that leads right into my other point about it, which is that it felt like a very, very white experience, like it could only ever be empowering for that kind of demographic. I mean, think of the cinematography. On one hand, keeping the movie that bright really did make the horror so so visceral, but on the other hand⌠literally, the entire movie, is white. Coincidence?âÂ
(~)
âThatâs the point, isnât it?â Sally asked, blinking owlishly.
This was fun.
âI thought that made it even more ironic and ridiculous because, like you said, only white people would fall for whatever was going on in that...whole situation.â Sally shrugged and sat back in her seat a little. âIt can be empowering and kind of stupid at the same time. Would I fall for whatever shit they had going on? No. Was it cathartic to watch Dani fall for it? Yes.â

âTo each their own. I wouldnât choose to study the subjects youâre studying, but that doesnât mean theyâre not as interesting as what Iâm studying,â Kim said as she walked alongside Sally.
Kim had never considered studying anything other than the subjects she had chosen, well the business was to appease her grandparents, who had advised her to have a backup degree in case she changed her mind about fighting crime. Which Kim didnât see coming because it felt like she was born for it, and you know what they say about not running away from your destiny and all that.
(~)
No, really, Sally had meant that. Sarah had already chosen her majors and Sally knew it would be suspicious if she didnât follow through with them. Especially from her dad, who would question if she suddenly switched to...well, Sally wasnât sure what she would study anyway. She was just here for the experience. She had a second shot at life, she wanted to experience all of it. Starting with university. Once upon a time, that hadnât even been allowed for her.
âRight,â Sally said, not really sure what else to say. They walked quietly for a step or two.
âWhy criminal justice?â she asked, still curious about that piece of things.

âOh, you know, the boys. Ed, my roommate, Ferb, my bro, Kyle and Jimmy from the play. You know âem?â The only person Phineas thought Sarah might know would be Ferb, since they were in the same year at school, but Ferb was also not a super outgoing person. So he couldnât be sure.Â
(~)
Sally didnât know who the fuck any of those people were. Maybe...Ferb. That name sounded slightly familiar from Sallyâs diaries, but the names Kyle and Jimmy could be literally a million different people potentially. Best to play it safe...
âOh, yeah, I think some of them sound familiar! Youâll have to introduce me to them...are you all at PrideU?â

âOf course. Why would you?â Lightning laughed, though there was hardly any humor to it. What he meant, of course, was that he was in this backwards, middle-of-nowhere, magic-obsessed town where nobody cared what happened in California.Â
âŚBut there was a part of Lightning, too, that worried that it had something to do with the fact that, if this girl had any interest in the Grand Prix, she would probably be far more interested in some of those younger rookiesâŚ
No, it was definitely just a Swynlake thing!
âForget it.â Lightning was sure he could at least locate someone in this town who didnât seem to delight in his misery (or perhaps he was projecting, but it certainly felt that way).
(~)
This interaction was going from weird to...even weirder. Verging on uncomfortable?
âRight, will do,â Sally said, giving the bloke a sarcastic thumbs up as she took a step back. She didnât turn around until she was a few steps away and then turned on her heel, heading down the street.
And people said Sarah was a weirdo when there were people like that running around town?
Hey, Sarahâs voice echoed in her head.

âEesh, I donât know. I donât really run.â It was said with a laugh although it was mostly true. She only ran if her life really actually depended on it. It was super not her thing.Â
But that also wasnât the point. The point was that Sarah was joking and teasing like a person she could talk to instead of a shaking breeze with legs and Mim didnât really want to let go of it. She had wanted to be friends with Sarah, really. But somehow every step sheâd made was wrong. This was better.Â
âSo, left or right at this fork? Any guesses on which leads to escape and which to certain death?â
(~)
âLeft,â Sally determined with little thought.
âI hope this one leads to certain death,â she deadpanned as they turned down that part of the maze. âI think itâd be very on the nose to die in a haunted corn maze. Like the perfect start to a horror film. The killer hiding among all the other actors and you think itâs all part of it until, yâknow, youâre getting stabbed.â

Pip nodded, listening. His eyebrows raised at the right parts and he kept nodding. Sarah seemed super into itâ which honestly was the thing that mattered, that she was into it, and could get excited about something.Â
âSort ofâ though to be honest, I kinda felt like the whole thing reeked of hash-tag girl boss feminism,â he said. âLike, do I believe Taylor Swift could have written a song for those closing credits? I do. Would I have loved that song? Absolutely. Would it have been good? No.âÂ
Pip didnât actually believe this, necessarily. But he was great at devilâs advocate. In fact, it was one of his favourite games to play.Â
(~)
âAre you really someone to judge, considering youâre a male presenting person?â Sally shot back at once, scowling slightly. She didnât know Pip very well, maybe Sarah had known him better but she wasnât about to let any man tell her how to think about feminism. It was bad enough she had to take orders from Sarahâs horrifying father.
âI think girlboss feminism is exactly what horror genre needs as whole, considering its historical treatment of women. Sometimes, as a woman, you just want to watch someone get brutally murdered by another woman.â

Ooooo, a newer movie plus a cult classic! Pip was always a big fan of a cult classic, especially any classics about cults (like Midsommar!)Â
âOkay, Saraaaaah!â he drew out her name to show he was impressed. âLoving that. Interested to hear your thoughts on Midsommar in particular! Like, what was the appeal for you?âÂ
(~)
âThe male directorâs masochistic fantasy of emasculation at the hands of a matriarchal cult,â Sally said with a little smile, her eyes flashing.
âThatâs what one reviewer said anyway. I think it is sort of true. I donât think that makes it any less feminist. In fact, that might make it more feminist. And I think that her boyfriend deserved to die.â Her shoulder shrugged and she laughed. âI just liked the twist on a final girl too. I mean, Dani gets to be involved in the end? Maybe I shouldnât like that she was inducted into a cult but it felt kind of...healing? You know?â

Huh. Interesting. Pip twirled his pen as he leaned back against his chair.
That was not exactly what he had envisioned, but Pipâs imagination could be very flexible, at least at this stage. There could be some fun appeal to like, showing Sarah movies and stuff for the first time. He did love to gaysplain.Â
Or would it be boring? For the audience? For Pip?Â
Hm hm hm!Â
âIt has potential,â agreed Pip with a nod. âWell! Tell me whatâs been your favourite movie then, since turning 18!âÂ
(~)
Sally was being judged. She did not like to be judged, but she took in a deep breath. She had been reanimated. This was her second chance at life. She needed to appreciate it. Needed to drink it in. Even the petty university drama.
âHm, well, thatâs hard to say,â she did not lie. She had spent most of her boring summer watching movies when not tending to dead bodies for her father.
âMidsommar,â she finally said, with a little purse of her lips. âAnd Beetlejuice.â

Holy shit, Sarah Finklestein??Â
Of all the people Pip had thought might walk through that door, he would not have picked her. For one, he forgot she existed until right this second. For two, Sarah was what happened when a child was left alone with her collection of porcelain dolls for too long. She started to resemble themâ quiet, big-eyed, haunted little freaks.Â
But like, maybe it was true what the Bible said. The Meek Shall Inherit. Little Miss Meek was here for her debut.Â
(And Pip had heard some weird shit about her over the past month.)Â
âWell hello hello, Miss Finklestein!â Pip greeted warmly then. He gestured to the seat his opposite. âTake a seat, take a seat! I had no idea you were passionate about music and entertainment!âÂ
(~)
âWell, Iâm not--really, I mean, I am but Iâm not very familiar with a lot of things,â Sally admitted, sitting down and crossing her ankles primly. âBut I thought that was what could be fun about it. I...was not allowed to watch a lot of movies and stuff growing up, but now I am eighteen and I can do whatever I want,â she affirmed with the self-assuredness of an eighteen year old.
âI just--thought I might be able to bring an interesting perspective.â She blinked her wide, doe-eyes at him.

âCertainly brave, but I donât know how much the ghosts need braving. So far they seem pretty friendly to me.â
She and Sarah were walking the same way at the moment so it was easy to fall into step next to her, at least until the next form in the path. Then who knew what they would decide, she wasnât stressed about it.Â
âThen again I heard there were zombies here too. Think theyâd want to be friends?â
(~)
Had the girl met a lot of ghosts?
Oh, did she mean the people dressed up in the corn maze? Hm.
The whole conversation was turning delightfully ironic, considering that Sally was technically a zombie. If you wanted to call her that. It wouldnât be...wrong. Not exactly correct either, but she wasnât the kind of undead who got offended by that sort of thing. The ones who did were pedantic assholes.
âHm, I suppose it depends on the zombie? But donât worry, we can out run the ones who donât, donât you think?â

âYeah, yeah, just started,â He nodded, âThatâs so cool though! What course are you doing? Maybe Iâll see you around?â That would be nice, Sarah had always been a nice kid, and there was something about having familiar people around as well as all the new faces that he just found nice.Â
âOh, uh, do you want to keep moving? Before we get some kind of zombie coming along and trying to chase us?â
(~)
Wow, walking through a haunted maze with Jeremy? That was, like, so romantic. Sarah would totally die if she was in Sallyâs shoes right now. Wait. She already had. Haha. Ghost humor.
âOh, yeah! Definitely, thanks, Jer,â Sally said, reaching out to touch his arm fondly before moving forward.
She felt something tug her hair like a breeze, even though at the moment the air was quite still.
âIâm doing literature and atelier!â Sarah had already signed up for atelier and her father hadnât let her change it, but Sally had been able to add literature. Which was fine, considering she didnât need to sleep. âI am sure we will see each other plenty. Were you at that dorm party last week?â
