The Social Network (2010) was ahead of its time. It was made too early. People thought it was over-the-top in its depiction of Mark Zuckerberg, that it wasn’t totally accurate, that it exaggerated the way Facebook is exploitative and was born from exploitation and deception. It ended up losing most academy awards it was nominated for. The King’s Speech ended 2010 as the “best” movie, and it has fallen completely off the radar in the meantime. Meanwhile, The Social Network was truly a work of art. Like it had all the shit about Zuckerberg being a robot, the irony of him being a complete asshole that started a social media company that is supposed to “connect” us to each other, the hollowness of greed - Fincher had our memes before we had them, presented in a mindblowingly piercing and biting movie. David Fincher made a masterpiece with that film and I feel like it is only going to be viewed more and more positively as we all collectively realize how fucking true the film is.
