i keep wondering about some choices they made for the movie
they toned down sejanus quite a bit from the book and i wonder what was that supposed to show, like what kind of characteristics of snow was it supposed to highlight
bc we all know snow's an unreliable narrator. he describes sejanus as reckless and whatnot but baby boy was making PLANS. he BOUGHT those guns he wasn't surprised that the rebels got them he KNEW. he was very deliberate and honestly it shocked me when he was like "just gonna threaten the guards with the gun while we get out lil" i'm like damn sejanus. i would have thought you can't even stomach that from snow's narration
obviously, since it's all from snow's pov, the strength of his character is understated, undermined. let us not forget he was the only one who stood up to dr gaul. let us not forget he went into the arena where he could be killed easily. let us not forget he was tortured before his hanging and he did NOT give up the name of that traitor snow.
i just can't help thinking about how he was really like and how snow didn't want to see him: strong, kindhearted, intelligent, witty, possibly a little cunning but only for the right things.
nothing but death was gonna stop him and that kind of passion is just incredible. he was uncontrollable fire, that much we know, and snow hated that more than anything.

In defense of Sejanus Plinth part 2 cause I’m still seeing TERRIBLE takes.
I am convinced (and this is my OPINION but I will try to back it up with relevant info from the books) that Sejanus could not have “done a lot of good” if he stayed in the Capitol and used his “privilege” to end the games like Plutarch did.
Reason one: Our wonderful president of Panem is literally famous for poisoning people. The games are Coriolanus Snow’s claim to fame, his means of control. He NEEDS the games. If Sejanus stayed in the Capitol and gave one INKLING that he was going to threaten the Games’ sanctity Coriolanus. Would. Poison. Him. Like literally immediately.
Reason two: Yes the Plinths have money. Spoiler, so do most in the Capitol. Many of Coriolanus’s classmates are equal in wealth to Sejanus’s family (aka the Heavensbees, Cranes, and Creeds). The only reason Coriolanus hates specifically the Plinths for their wealth is because they are DISTRICT. In Coriolanus’s eyes they do not DESERVE their wealth because of where they came from. Yeah, Sejanus never starved like Coriolanus did. He was not really that privileged though. In the books, he lived in an apartment that was NOT ON THE CORSO that looked unimpressive from the outside, suggesting that the Plinths would never have the real status of a born Capitol citizen. Sejanus and the rest of the Plinths were and always will be outcasted because of their origin. That doesn’t sound like privilege to me. Doesn’t sound like something he could use for a lot of good.
Number three (the most important) reason: That is not the POINT of his character. Sejanus is kind and he speaks his mind and he cannot look past atrocity. Plutarch did a lot of good, yes, but he did some TERRIBLE shit to get to that end. Sejanus COULDN’T do that. He would not have the heart. He was too good for a world like Panem, the point is that his kindness cannot exist in a world like that, it will be snuffed out.
Anyway, sorry for the rant but like… yes, morally grey characters like Plutarch are cool and interesting to read about. But I feel like there’s this obsession with conniving characters and they’re starting to be seen as the only GOOD characters because people love to insert their own beliefs or methods onto literature. Sejanus is a wholeheartedly good person and not under any circumstance morally grey. If that makes him boring, fine. But like, don’t say “oh he should have done (insert thing so incredibly out of character it’s insane) instead!” when it makes no sense and completely disregards the point of his character.

sejanus plinth sneaking into the hunger games arena remains so incredibly important to me because it encompasses so much of who sejanus is as a character: myopic to a fault, but inherently good. i think it is so unfair to characterize him as reckless without also considering the fact that he felt helpless, and that he was, beyond no uncertain doubt desperate in the wake of marcus’ death/punishment. this section in particular is one i always come back to:
Tumblr media
though this thought process is admittedly lacking in well, thought, it emphasizes the degree to which this boy cared. he was ready to be martyred—and for people who didn’t even like him! marcus spent the entire time hating sejanus for the mere fact that he had become capital. he did not trust him, did not take his food, and would not accept any token of his friendship. he had no interest in any of it, and sejanus, instead of turning his nose up at the boy and contending with the fact that he was no longer district, only pressed on. even after marcus had died — especially after marcus had died — sejanus buckled down. he decided that, having no fixed place and no express purpose other than to be a pawn in a game coriolanus could not even begin to comprehend, he would rather die. he truly felt that was all he could do to help.
and that thought process was not entirely without its rationale! he had just watched a boy he had once been classmates with—someone who had packed ice, without a thought, onto his hand that one day it was smashed simply because he was kind—get hung up and made into an example, as if he was some kind of monster. sejanus watched this boy die a painful and senseless death, and he wandered into that arena because of that! he knew the cameras were on. he knew people were watching. he attempted to cross marcus’ arms and he spread bread crumbs over his stiff frame, because he wanted to say: fuck you, you can hang up this boy but i won’t let him die without showing how human he is. but he also did it because that is just who he is! this was something he did with archane’s body too—and archane was someone he could not stand. he wanted these people, no matter how cruel or unkind, no matter where or who they came from, to be treated with respect and dignity. every person dead because of these games was one too many for sejanus, no matter which side. he sought something far greater than the end of the hunger games; he knew the problem laid far deeper, and he believed only in his death could he begin to help solve it.
