Get To Know Our Team: Gino Marconi (UTC Artistic Associate) - “Sonnets For An Old Century”
From now until the end of the run, we will be highlighting the talented individuals who have helped make the Midwest Premiere of Sonnets For An Old Century by José Rivera possible! Enjoy our brief questionnaire!
Where are you from? Born and raised in Chicago
What is your role in "Sonnets"? I play a character by the name of Carlo Alban who was actually inspired by José Rivera’s son.
Why is your sonnet important? My sonnet reminds us of the innocence of youth and the excitement of exploring new things. I feel we are so consumed with the hustle and bustle of living and trying to survive that we fail to see the beauty of the universe that is all around us.
Why do you think people should come see this show? It’s not your typical “play.” I think there is something for everyone in this show. The acting is spectacular and you will leave the show with something.
What's your favorite thing about theatre in Chicago? There is so much of it! There is a show out there for anyone's taste pretty much any day of the week. Lots of hidden gems.
What is your favorite line in the show, and why? “The first time you get the Dog to shit outside” because Alex Polcyn does a pretty mean Mexitaliano accent when he does it. Plus I remember the first time my little Dexter pooped outside.
What if your favorite play you've ever been in? An original play called Burma Shave Highway. It was one of my first productions and a huge learning experience.
What's your favorite food? I have two. Pizza and Cereal.
Who is your favorite actor [screen or stage], and why? I have a few but two that are really standing out are Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Stoning of Soraya M) and Christian Bale. They become the character. They are so invested and it shows. I love that!
What's the best piece of advice you've ever gotten? “If you can see it, you can achieve it.” Thanks Lucy!

Get To Know Our Team: Juan Castañeda (UTC Company Member) - “Sonnets For An Old Century”
From now until the end of the run, we will be highlighting the talented individuals who have helped make the Midwest Premiere of Sonnets For An Old Century by José Rivera possible! Enjoy our brief questionnaire!
What is your role in “Sonnets”? Collaborative Director, and occasional merchandise rep.
Why do you think people should come see this show? There is no way I can do justice to describing the beauty and elegance of the language. It's raw and emotionally charged and at the language just has this ability to flow like waves, or trees in a breeze. The only way to really get the languages full affect is to experience it first hand. Plus with the range of sonnets you hear there's definitely something in there everyone will be able to relate to.
What is your favorite play you’ve ever worked on? Cloud Tectonics also by José Rivera. It was the first full length play I directed. Nothing ever compares to your first!!
Who is your favorite playwright? Ah jeez......This answer can change on a daily basis. It started out with Arthur Miller because I really connected to the blue collared every day man feeling in his plays. Nowadays, I'll safely say my favorite playwright's are the ones that wrote the plays I direct.
What is your favorite production you’ve seen done in Chicago? Toss up between Electricidad over at the Goodman a few years back, and Guinea Pig Solo over at Collaboraction, also a few years back, but not as far back.
What’s your favorite food? Grilled Skirt Steak. It has to be marinated by my mom and grilled by me. Deadly Combo.
What’s your favorite part about working with UTC? The end result in any production is always powerful, and gorgeous. On a more personal level, through good times or rough patches, I've always felt at home, amongst family.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I'll be freaking out about being at the brink of 40. Owning a two-flat but living in the garden apartment to make money from rent. Unmarried, but possibly two children. Still doing Theatre, which is more than likely the reason for being unmarried. (Never mind the fact that i'd be living in a basement).

Get To Know Our Team: Hank Hilbert (UTC Artistic Associate) - “Sonnets For An Old Century”
From now until the end of the run, we will be highlighting the talented individuals who have helped make the Midwest Premiere of Sonnets For An Old Century by José Rivera possible! Enjoy our brief questionnaire!
Where are you from? I am an Air Force brat, my father was a career military man and I was born at Clark Air Force base Philippines. What is your role in “Sonnets”? I play Rene Riviera Why do you think people should come see this show? I think people should see live theatre no matter the show, but they should come to see this show because they should see some really good young actors doing their thing. What is your favorite play you’ve ever worked on? I know that this will sound corny but all the shows that I have done are my favorite. Each one has there own challenges and they teach me something about myself and mankind. Who is your favorite playwright? I don’t have a favorite because I feel that writing a play is so difficult, my brain doesn’t work that way, and for someone to write a play I can’t say that I have a favorite. I enjoy them all, good or bad. What is your favorite production you’ve seen done in Chicago? I saw a show done by a Belarus group done at Chicago Shakes that was just amazing. What’s your favorite food? It is a Filipino dish that is squid. What’s your favorite part about working with UTC? When they say “From the Streets to the Stage” is really true. I love the fact that we really try to incorporate the neighborhood and the people around it to see the shows and involve them. To tell you the truth that is why I became a member because of what I saw during my first show with UTC, I knew that I wanted to be involved with that type of Theatre Company. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I try not to look that far ahead. I try to look at it day by day and if I do look ahead it is one year at a time. So to answer the question, I don’t know.

From now until the end of the run, we will be highlighting the talented individuals who have helped make the Midwest Premiere of Sonnets For An Old Century by José Rivera possible! Enjoy our brief questionnaire!
Where are you from? I am from Logan Square in Chicago, IL....and before that from the desert of New Mexico, before that from Bolanos, Mexico, and before that...my mother's womb.
What is your role in Sonnets? Doris Defarnecio. It's always a pleasure to perform her.
Why do you think people should come see this show? Great people in the cast, meaningful stories, and to support the great work that Urban Theatre does.
What's your favorite thing about theatre in Chicago? There is always a good play to see somewhere or another all the time. Also, Chicago theatre is a community. It's great to see a play and realize you know some of the cast members.
Who is your favorite playwright? Nilo Cruz. I was first introduced to him when I was 15 and performed in Night Train to Bolina. Since then I have read his other plays and find them to be beautiful.
What is your favorite play you've seen done in Chicago? Hard question to ask. I love a lot of plays I've seen done in Chicago. I guess the latest I've seen and really enjoyed was El Nogalar at the Goodman. It was entertaining, well written, and wonderfully acted.
What's your favorite food? I love gorditas!
Who is your favorite actor? I'm a big fan of Charin Alvarez. She always approaches her characters from the heart. She is captivating to watch, she's a great person, and is an example of a talented Mexican woman with an accent that kicks butt!!

Get To Know Our Team: Alex Polcyn (UTC Artistic Associate) - “Sonnets For An Old Century”
From now until the end of the run, we will be highlighting the talented individuals who have helped make the Midwest Premiere of Sonnets For An Old Century by José Rivera possible! Enjoy our brief questionnaire!
Where are you from? I was born in Milford, Michigan
What is your role in Sonnets? I play John Vargas and shadow number two from the left.
Why do you think people should come see this show? Sonnets is unlike any show I've seen or worked on before. The play is essentially a book of poetry, which allows it to be very audience subjective. Everyone walks out affected by different elements or performances; it's a very individual experience. And the production works hard to stimulate and attack as many areas of your senses as possible. Did that answer the question?
What is your favorite play you've ever worked on? Three summers ago I did a play called Lorca in a Green Dress by Nilo Cruz. Reason number 1: The show is very dream-like and focuses on the great poet Federico Garcia Lorca. Reason number 2: I toured the show through Prague, CZ.
Who is your favorite playwright? The answer is ever changing but constants are Stephen Adly Guirgis and John Patrick Shanley.
What is your favorite production you've seen done in Chicago? Hands down Killer Joe (pre-Royal George) at Profiles Theatre. Amazing. Shocking. Gorgeous.
What is your favorite food? If my fellow cast-mates were to answer for me they'd say candy, but the adult in me says goat cheese.
What is your favorite part about working with UTC? Everyone's crazy...and crazy makes good art.
Who is your favorite actor? I'd have to say Patrick Stewart (and not because of his Star Trek years (I've actually never seen anything Star Trek related). But because of his Shakespearean work, whether it's on stage (company member of the Royal Shakespeare Company) or on screen (many film versions from Hamlet to Macbeth) he has so much control and command of the language, it's inspiring. I'm also a fan of Amy Adams she has such simplicity, innocence, and ease on screen that I, as an actor, sometimes struggle with. I guess that's two... oops.

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Mazomanie, Wisconsin (a small town outside of Madison).
What is your role in “Sonnets”? Production Manager (PM).
Why do you think people should come see this show? It’s an experience completely unlike anything playing across Chicago right now. The world created in Sonnets in powerful and moving, in no small thanks to the talent and passion of the cast and the crew.
What is your favorite play you’ve ever worked on? That has to be The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) with WHHS Players when I was in high school. It was the very first production of what became the foundation for a thriving high school theatre company. Plus, the show has a sock ghost, can’t beat that.
Who is your favorite playwright? Tough question, but lately I have been reading a lot by the mysterious Jane Martin. Who are you Jane Martin?!
What is your favorite production you’ve seen done in Chicago? II once saw a production of Chicago in Serbia, does that count?
What’s your favorite food? Deep dish pizza
What’s your favorite part about working with UTC? The dedication and enthusiasm the company brings to each project.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Ruling the world. Or at least touring it.

Director's Notes from Madrid St. Angelo
This is one of the first drawings that I made of 'the World of Sonnets'. For me this world always revolved around a magical, mystical circle...a 'hole' if you will....mirroring some kind of celestial gravitational pull or cyclone. This whole would 'spin' life into existence. The thought of this 'hole' came from the poem 'Thank You God' by e.e. cummings. Jose Rivera includes this poem as somewhat of a forward to his play. In the poem...cummings talks about the birthday of the sun....and the relationship between the sun and the earth. The poem includes the line..today is the birthday of the sun... I immediately thought about how our beloved earth revolves around the sun...I began thinking circles/circular motion...gravity..God literally spinning creation into existence. You can see of this in this first sketch....**you can actually see where I had wanted scrims where the souls could be seen behind and here's something funny...I had actually wanted candles in the four corners of the playing area...me and my candles....some things about being a Catholic, you just can't shake!

What is your favorite play you've ever worked on? Lorca in a Green Dress by Nilo Cruz. Summer 2009.

Get To Know Our Team: Paloma Nozicka - “Sonnets For An Old Century”

Where are you from? Glenview, IL, and Cupertino, CA. My childhood was split between the two.
What is your role in "Sonnets"? A ballerina/astronaut named Maricella.
Why is your sonnet important? The language in my piece is so lushly beautiful. It paints some gorgeous and unexpected images. I hope that I am doing José's language justice.
What is your favorite play you've ever been in? I was in a production of the musical HAIR when I went to school in Madison, WI, that was an experience unlike any other. A naked, naked experience.
Who is your favorite playwright? Shakespeare, Donald Margulies, Beckett, Lorca, Kenneth Lonergan, Tony Kushner, Neil Simon...the list goes on and on.
What is your favorite production you've seen done in Chicago? I was blown away by the Goodman's recent production of Candide. My life's goal is to be able to sing "Glitter and Be Gay".
What's your favorite food? Sushi, pizza, and tapas....I'm trying to invent a way to combine all three that isn't disgusting.
Who is your favorite actor [screen or stage], and why? I love Colin Firth because he is a ridiculously good actor, and just so British and CUTE! I also idol-worship Kristen Chenowith...she's hilarious, sexy, and can belt any opera just as well as any show tune.
Where do you see yourself in ten years? I see myself acting and hopefully writing plays as well. And living in either NYC or Paris!
What's the best piece of advice you've ever gotten? My mom always taught me that if I have my own vote of confidence, everyone else will follow suit. I also love Penny Lane's infamous quote, "Never take it seriously. You never take it seriously, you never get hurt. You never get hurt, you always have fun." Oh, and one time my brother told me that if I'm ever on an airplane that's about to crash, just accept that I'm going to die, because airplanes are just flying metal coffins. He told me that when I was five. Thanks bro.

Get To Know Our Team: Shannon Matesky- “Sonnets For An Old Century”
From now until the end of the run, we will be highlighting the talented individuals who have helped make the Midwest Premiere of Sonnets For An Old Century possible! Enjoy our brief questionnaire!
Where are you from? Berkeley, California. BAY AREA!!!
What is your role in "Sonnets"? John Ortiz
Why is your sonnet important? In my sonnet John realizes why he might be lost in the in between. He accepts that maybe he made himself come to a place like this, that maybe he didn't live the ideal life he was supposed to. John, like so many of us recognizes what he has taken for granted. What he had, and now has lost. What I love about this sonnet though is that he does not apologize for it. He stands by the choices he made as right, despite what society, other people, and maybe even the Universe or God may think. He was following where his heart led and its taken him here. His sonnet is a quest to own that this is a part of the journey.
Why do you think people should come see this show? This show discusses life and death from so many angles. It allows us to think about what is important and what isn't. What are we holding onto and why? These people have not passed on and I hope the audience thinks about what's keeping them. What haven't they settled? This play also validates their experiences, angers and fears and challenges them to face them in their living opportunity. These souls get to share an acquired knowledge that might help save somebody, might help others understand. This show has the ability to wake up humanity, if they listen and let it penetrate.
What's your favorite thing about theatre in Chicago? The diversity of material. Chicago is vibrant and full of finding new work and work that challenges our lives. We have a slew of supporters who come to get transformed. The artists are the best in their fields working extra hard to tell stories to the best of their abilities. We dig up the stories others forget and write the ones there are not words for. We are innovative here in Chicago, making storytelling vital to our everyday existance.
What is your favorite line in the show, and why? Whoa, I think I have too many. I would moreso say the eloquence that Jose uses. His warm images and repetitions quake my bones.
What if your favorite play you've ever been in? So far, Kristoffer Diaz's Welcome to Arroyo's. It was a hip hop story, a sibling story, a story I felt close to because it reminded me of home.
Who is your favorite playwright? Whew, another loaded one. I don't have a favorite but right now I can say Shakespeare and I digg some Edward Albee. He knows how to capture the essence of a woman scorned.
If the world were about to explode and you could only take one member of the "Sonnets" cast with you to live on the moon, who would it be and why? Gino, duh. His monologue talks about the moon all the time so I think he'd know how to survive there and he would bring chocolate.
What is your favorite production you've seen done in Chicago? Whew. These questions. Edward II directed by Sean Graney and The Brother Sister Plays directed by Tina Landau.
What's your favorite food? Spaghetti!
What's your favorite part about working with UTC? We are family. We fight, we eat, we laugh, we love. Sounds like the kind of people I wanna work with!
Who is your favorite actor [screen or stage], and why? Anyone who is brave enough to do solo performance. It just blows me away. So close to personal and interpersonal, so many things to risk. Its brave to me. I admire any and all performers willing to be brave.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I'm gonna have a Tony and an Oscar... yeah I said it. Most importantly I want to be a resource of stories and how to make it through life. I will still be educating, writing, acting and anything else that comes my way. In 10 years I will still be working. Who could ask for more in this business?
What's the best piece of advice you've ever gotten? "You are enough." Oh and, "Shannon, need somebody."
Thank you to every teacher, mentor, friend, stranger who has advised me in anything. I listen, and take notes.

Get To Know Our Team: Christian Blackburn- “Sonnets For An Old Century”
From now until the end of the run, we will be highlighting the talented individuals who have helped make the Midwest Premiere of Sonnets For An Old Century possible! Enjoy our brief questionnaire!
Where are you from? Originally my mother's womb. But I was raised in Blue Island, a south suburb of Chicago. Home of music legends, Mest.
Why is your sonnet important? Because I am in it. I kid. My sonnet is about coming face to face with your demons, and how we are all held accountable for the things we do in life, and the hope for redemption.
Why do you think people should come see this show? This show could be done a million different ways. I think most people have a different idea of what the afterlife looks like and this is ours. Hopefully, this show gets people talking, or at least thinking, about theirs.
What if your favorite play you've ever been in? There are two ways to answer this. My favorite experience doing a show came in college during "Big Love" by Charles Mee. The most challenging, and therefore rewarding experience was "Cuba and His Teddy Bear" with UTC.
Who is your favorite playwright? I'm a huge fan of Ionesco and Beckett. Absurdity just fits my life.
What is your favorite production you've seen done in Chicago? Admittedly, I don't see as much theatre as I should or would like to. But the two shows that I've seen that have stuck with me are "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" at Gift Theater and "Richard III" at Chicago Shakespeare.
Favorite food? Ain't nothing better than my mom's enchiladas.
Who is your favorite actor [screen or stage], and why? Not sure if he is my favorite, but James Franco is quickly moving up the ranks. Gotta respect anyone that does a soap opera just because he can.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I will have received at least one Oscar nomination. I'll give myself 15 years until I win.

Get To Know Our Team: Marvin Eduardo Quijada- "Sonnets For An Old Century"
From now until the end of the run, we will be highlighting the talented individuals who have helped make the Midwest Premiere of Sonnets For An Old Century possible! Enjoy our brief questionnaire! What is your favorite thing about theatre in Chicago? My favorite thing about theatre in chicago is that there is so much of it, which means that there's something for everybody. I enjoy clown/ mime/ physical theater, so if this is what I'm in the mood to see, then I can just search for it and I know I'll come across someone, somewhere who is putting something up. Whether the theater is good or bad is a different question. There's a lot of crap out there. What is your favorite play that you've been in? A Charlie Chaplin Christmas, done by Silent Theater a few years ago. It was a lovely tribute to Charlie Chaplin's greatest cinematic gags. The show essentially followed the storyline from Chaplin's "The Kid" and sprinkled his gags from his other films into the mix. It was a touching story about a father and his son filled with hilarious slap-stick, and, my personal favorite, heartbreak. It was a very physical theatrical piece that was done silently. The style was that of a silent black and white film set on a stage. It was the kind of theater I wish that I hadn't been in so i could check it out. What's your favorite production you've seen done in Chicago? Cabaret, which was done at Columbia College in Chicago a few years ago. I loved it because it combined so many elements of theater that I love: breaking the fourth wall, singing, dancing, a love story, a live band on stage, cool costumes, dazzling lighting, heartbreak, suspense, risk-taking actors and designers, and Nazi Germany. It left such a huge impact on me and elevated my standards on theater...and it was a college production! Take that, Broadway... granted I've never seen anything on Broadway...but whatever...take that, Broadway! Favorite food? Lasagna. Favorite actor? My favorite actress right now is Julianne Moore. I've never been disappointed with her work. I've been disappointed in the movies she's in, but her performance is normally awesome. I recently saw her in "A Single Man". She had one scene in the whole movie and she dominated her role, which was very inspiring to me. I'd poop in my pants if I got an opportunity to work with her...and I'm somewhat attracted to her. Best piece of advice you've ever gotten? The best piece of advice I've ever gotten is from the genie in the movie Aladdin. It's the scene where Aladdin is seeking Genie's help with how to impress Princess Jasmine, and the genie, in the body of a bee, replies, "just beeeeeeeee yourself." Classic advice that not everyone knows how to take. Oh Aladdin. So philosophical. I also like that quote from good 'ol honest Abe Lincoln: "Good things come to those who wait, but it's only the things left by those who hustle." For Tickets Click: Love is The Great Attractor
