"Deserts you say?" Aoi furrows his eyebrows- he couldn't think of any deserts in Kanto or around it. Maybe there used to be one a long time ago? There's probably books about that sort of stuff. Beats him.

"Can I try?" Aoi finally asks Yuki with a casual glance toward the other man, reaching out for the toy, but waiting to see if Yuki accepts. "Also... I wonder how the kanto meowth came to Kanto in the first place then. I don't remember there being a desert in or around it. But I also sucked at geology and ecological history, hah."

"I looked it up once. It has to do with their environments, if I remember right?" He yanks the toy free from Blackbeard's grip. The little meowth pretends to be disinterested, instead studying Aoi for a moment... before pouncing on the toy again. "Kantonian meowth originated in warmer climates. Deserts, I think? But Galarian Meowth aren't originally from Galar at all, they're from further north, and they're forest dwellers. So they developed completely different evolutions to suit their environments."

"He's definitely very cute, ferocious or not..." Aoi's almost tempted to poke the feline pokemon, but holds himself back. Instead he crouches a little away, rests his face in his palm, the elbow propped on his knee and watches it.

"I always wondered why these don't evolve into a type of perrsian like alolan and white meowth do."

"Heh. Here's hoping. He's going to be helping me out with my next Galar League challenge. He's definitely ferocious, as you can see." Cut to the meowth, grabbing onto the feather toy with all four legs and biting the feathers.

Aoi's gaze falls upon Lillie's fidgeting reaction, and he can feel her aura shift into a more timid, perhaps embarassed stance. The souldew gem in the necklace he keeps under the collar of his shirt gleams warmly into his collarbone as though trying to nudge him to more kindness, but he fails to notice.

Instead he can feel himself growing a little angry when he listens to Lillie's hypocrisy, only for the frustration to fizzle out and die when she apologizes so sincerely.

There's an exasperated sigh when Aoi draws one of his hands from his pockets, rubbing the back of his neck. Shoulders still somewhat pulled upward, tense, but he's at least trying to relax.

No need to unnecessarily lash out at someone who doesn't know better. She'd meant well, right? Right. He had to convince himself of that. Needless anger didn't bring his sister back either.

"Who..." Aoi's voice gets caught in his throat before he can finish the question, then he tries again.

"Did that person who got hurt recover?" A personal question. A hypocrisy on his end which he conveniently chooses to ignore in favor of learning, as long as he doesn't have to return the favor.

"If they're still around then you can at least still try to make it right."

she's startled by the outright rejection of her good will, immediately losing her metaphorical footing and fidgeting with the sleeves of her coat. she definitely overstepped, didn't she? lillie never did figure out how to gauge those specific boundaries. ahh... she feels so stupid...

and then his question. it causes her to pause. nebby's ball feels so heavy in her pocket.

“ i... i do. ” hypocrite. “ someone i love very dearly got... very hurt due to my cowardice. and i never stopped being scared since, either. i guess that's why i felt so strongly about this topic. ” a timid confession. the ball slightly moves.

“ i'm... sorry, i must have just been projecting those feelings onto you. i overstepped. ”

Did he? Aoi thought about it, and the act made him wish he hadn't. He hated the idea of a stranger getting to him with what she said so readily, yet that was th situation the young man was in. He hated humans. By the gods, they had such a way of irritating him in the most painful ways.

His eyebrows knitted together, the frustration poorly concealed-

"You don't know if I've gone through anything. You don't need to comfort me." Spoken more with a tone of irritation meant to deflect.

"And you? Do you blame yourself for your shortcomings?"

“ i guess... so, ” lillie muses almost to herself, thinking back to her adventure with selene. the girl seemed so fearless, but she must have been terrified. in the end, fear or not, she pushed through it... and that's what lillie's always admired.

perhaps that's this man's definition of fearless. maybe it was lillie who misunderstood.

“ you sound like you have a lot of regrets, ” probably not the most tactful thing to comment on, “ i don't encourage fear, i just don't think you need to be scared of.. being scared. whatever you've gone through, i hope... ”

what could she possibly say, when she has no idea the extent of his pain?

“ ...you don't blame yourself for those shortcomings. ”

"I think there's a place in the world for moments of fearlessness." The young man replies to Lillie's strong objection, shoving his hands deep into the pockets of his sports jacket. His eyes glide away from her to look elsewhere, almost as though scared to be found out, somehow.

"I wish I'd been fearless in some moments of my life. That wouldn't have meant I was safe though. I probably could have gotten myself killed, but..." Aoi pauses.

"Sometimes, I think it's worth the risk."

Like when you're trying to save someone.

"I don't care to be scared, anymore. Don't tell me it's something you encourage."
