One of my biggest pet peeves in regards to like, I guess media literacy, is when people say something is “weird” as a negative critique. Especially since it is so often pretty much the entirety of their critique!!! Like ok, let’s unpack this actually
Why is it weird? What makes it weird?
Did it make you uncomfortable? Why? Was it gross or lewd or maybe make you address something that you don’t know a lot about or makes you uncomfortable? Was it another reason?
Did you not understand it?
Was it unsettling?
Did it make you feel strong emotions that you aren’t used to or find unpleasant?
Did you not like the visual aesthetic? What about it didn’t you like? Why?
Was it unpleasant? Why?
Was it complex in a way you weren’t prepared for?
Was it trying to evoke uncomfortable feelings?
Did it have something that you personally just don’t enjoy? Why don’t you like it? Why does that make something weird?
Was it silly?
Was it trying to be “weird?”
Are you the intended audience?
Do you have necessary context that might be needed to fully understand it?
Did it make you address a bias you didn’t know you had?
Did it have cultural norms from a culture you are not a part of?
And it’s ok if you still don’t like something after expanding upon what you mean by “weird!” It really is! But you should understand why something evokes that feeling in you in a negative way. “Weird” is such a nothing statement. What do you mean by that, seriously? What’s weird to one person is extremely normal to another, and weird is often used to dismiss more important conversations about a piece!
I have more thoughts about this, but I am not the best with words. If you have more to add to this, especially if you have more questions to add to the “unpacking list,” please feel free to add onto the post!
This is something I feel very strongly about as an artist and someone who really enjoys media analysis and things a lot of people consider weird!
