Latest Video Work
Due to copyright claims, I can’t upload it. Please go to my google drive for the latest work. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1l4ChhBMXrFzeZNlyPOg1gVNlrgm6n2gC/view?usp=sharing
this latest work is a mixture of story-telling but also experimental in cuts, use of sounds, still-images as well as found videos. I wanted to tell a narrative in a more experimental way. I think it turns out great, though I’ve not had a chance to see it on a big projector to see what effects it gives.
the copyright was of a song that was used in the found video but I need to use it as the interview part is very core.

Zines
I’ll be bringing my zines with both material to cambodia to get feedbacks from people and will continue to make them as I am there. I am also going to try to host different zines workshop with different group of people and get feedbacks on them. Hopefully I can make a collective zines in the end with my experience in cambodia as well as encourages cambodian to be more vocal in their creative practices.

Zine with newsprint paper and OHP paper, I love the material quality in this zine, however it is very very difficult to reproduce in a large scale. Because the newsprint is so thin, I am not sure how it will work with collages and drawing and how long they can keep it for.

Zine with normal paper and translucent paper, this one was more successful and easier to print which adds to the zine culture - easier to replicate for people as well. Because normal paper is durable, they can draw and do collages easier too.

It was very difficult to print on newsprint paper as it jam the printer a lot and create all sort of wrinkles. I managed to make 1 full copy, though I love the material and the quality it gives, I think it takes too much time and effort to get it right. If next year I can find a place that does it for me, it will be a lot better.

Reflection Semester 2
This semester, I was really focused on what I wanted to achieve with my project, why is my project important and what role does it play outside of MFA?
This lead with to explore different things that can become an educational tool for the people. My project has had ups and downs with due to my personal life issues, however I am happy with where I am and where I am heading towards for next year. I think this semester has allowed to know what I want to do and what I can get out from my project, which is to reclaim my culture but more important to empower Khmers to do so as well.
This has led me to continue my video works which serve as inspiration and storytelling, I think has been very successul though it’s still very difficult to get the material needed for the work. My summer will be filled with videos and gathering everything that I need.
My zines were a lot of work, I really struggled entering the zine field as I often made my zines too “book” like, it lost a lot of the handmade aspect in which I tried different ways to tackle them. My last zine I think has a nice mix of digital and hand work, which I think stays more true to the Zine culture. Similarly to the videos, lack of materials is very difficult to make things “handmade” when there’s no magazine or newspaper or anything to work from. When in Cambodia I will collect as much as I can.
I plan to test both my videos and my zines in Cambodia to gather reactions and keep this blog running while I am there. I plan to also test zines workshops and try to integrate myself in the community as much as I can. Knotted has been the title I used for both my works, this is to link them together but also because a knot is consistent of one string. Knotted is to show the complicated issues we faced within national identity and globalisations. What is cultural identity in a globalised world?
The red string and red color represent many things, from the blood of our people to the khmer rouge, but also red as a lucky color for both cambodians and chinese. Just like the color red, our identity is many things.
The different languages at the end are the dominant cultures that has the most impacts in cambodia, Khmer - our people French - Colonialism English - Globalisation and dominant culture Mandarin - Neo-colonialism but also they are very much rooted in our intertwinning histories
