Have a glimpse into the life of a nursing student, where the journey requires not just hard work but also the ability to balance life. Thriving in this challenging yet fun journey.
Study Strategies for Success
Deep Understanding: It doesn't require to be good at memorization but more of understanding the complex material that demands critical thinking and application.
Collaborate and Teach: Making friends is a good way to be able to understand deeply the topics by forming a group and ask questions. Sharing knowledge could make the dream work.
Leverage Resources: Books can be overwhelming. Using online applications like flashcards, videos, and nursing related activities could help to clarify concepts.
Mastering Time Management
Nursing school is not just about mental learning but also requires skills that need to manage time properly in order to have a life-school-work balance. Make a to-do list, planner may it be digital or written, time blocking, and set realistic goals. This helps to properly manage your time from studies, clinical duties, and personal life.
Prioritizing Well-Being
A nurse is to take care of others. However, it starts with taking care to our self.
Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep. If you have the time to take a nap, grab it because you wouldn't get more of it when working.
Exercise and balance diet can relieve stress and be able to work our mind and body properly.
Social support is essential in order for you to have another outlet away from school, unwind, and reconnect with friends, family, and even nature.
Overcoming Obstacles
Nursing isn't a smooth road, but there are ways to overcome them.
Rotations & Academics: These two can be a conflict by its time to study and to perform. Utilize breaks to study or review notes during clinical rotations.
Financial Strain: Nursing can be one of the luxury courses, and juggling it with part-time jobs can add pressure. There are many scholarships that offer a balance of time for having part-time jobs and covering tuition.
Information Overload: Nursing tends to give overload information, which is very overwhelming. Breaking topics down into smaller sections and focusing on understanding the topics helps manage load.
Nursing is not an easy path to take. It takes courage, and having a good mindset can make all the differences. We are not just learning to take care of others but also to be a growing compassionate and skilled professionals who will save lives.
A Moment in Time as a Nursing Student and an SK Kagawad
by Yukari Climaco
As a nursing student and an SK Kagawad, I experience a profound sense of responsibility and connection to my community. While balancing both roles can be draining, it is also incredibly fulfilling. It allows me to develop my leadership skills while pursuing my dream profession.
One particular moment stands out vividly in my memory. I had to rush to the barangay hall immediately after school, still in my uniform, with my notes and textbooks in hand. Leading the session, I found myself explaining concepts that I had only recently learned. It was a surreal and overwhelming experience. At that point, the weight of both roles felt almost unbearable, and I seriously considered stepping down as an SK Kagawad.
But then, I looked around and saw the eager faces of the youth, their eyes filled with trust and admiration. They weren’t just looking at me as a peer but as a leader. In that moment, I realized the impact I was making—not just in their lives but in the broader community. It reminded me why I chose to serve.
The energy and enthusiasm of the community inspired me to continue balancing my studies and my responsibilities. It reinforced my commitment to bringing the knowledge I acquire, particularly in healthcare, to those who need it. More than that, it reminded me that service is not limited to my future career as a nurse but extends to empowering the youth and addressing community needs.
Balancing these responsibilities demands focus, dedication, and compassion. It’s not easy, but moments like this make the journey worthwhile.
Time Management as a Medical Student
by Danica Diems
Time management as a medical student is a real thing and is one of the most important parts of medical school. Being a medical student is an exciting yet challenging experience. With so many lectures, practicals, and clinical duties, it can feel like there is not enough time in the day. To stay productive and avoid burnout, effective time management tactics are required while balancing education, personal life, and well-being.
CHALLENGES IN TIME MANAGEMENT
Medical students have multiple challenges when it comes to effective time management:
Overwhelming Workload: The sheer amount of knowledge to learn can be daunting, resulting in stress and inefficiency.
Procrastination: With so much to accomplish, it’s easy to postpone tasks until the last minute, resulting in panic and poor performance.
Maintaining Balance: Balancing academic obligations with personal health, social life, and extracurricular activities is a constant challenge.
A GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE TIME MANAGEMENT
Here are some useful techniques to assist medical students in better managing their time:
1. Prioritize Tasks
Use tools like to-do lists or planners to prioritize tasks based on their urgency and importance. Taking care of high-priority tasks initially can help you avoid last-minute stress.
2. Develop a Study Schedule
Make a clear study plan with set time slots for each subject. Splitting study sessions into smaller, easy-to-handle parts helps you stay focused and remember things better.
3. Avoid Multitasking
Focusing on one task at a time increases efficiency and reduces mistakes. It helps to fully engage with the material without feeling overwhelmed.
4. Leverage Productivity Tools
Apps such as Google Calendar, Notion, and Pomodoro timers can help you plan and manage your work more successfully, ensuring constant progress.
5. Take Breaks Strategically
Regular short breaks during study sessions can boost concentration and prevent mental fatigue. Techniques like the Pomodoro method (25-minute study, 5-minute break) can be helpful.
6. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Exercise, proper nutrition, and sufficient sleep are crucial for maintaining energy levels and cognitive function. A healthy body supports a sharp mind.
7. Seek Support When Needed
Don’t hesitate to ask for help from professors, peers, or mentors. Sharing experiences and tips with fellow students can offer valuable insights and motivation.
Conclusion
Effective time management is crucial for achieving success as a medical student. By prioritizing tasks, adhering to a well-structured plan, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, students can effectively balance their academic responsibilities with personal well-being. Establishing productive habits early on not only enhances academic performance but also contributes to long-term success in the medical profession.
