Day 4
Date: April 19th, Friday
Event: I Used To Be Funny
Location: Denty Cinema Newtown (261-263 King St, Newtown NSW 2042)
Tumblr media
I was the photographer today and it was a new indoor location too. After I arrived, I was sitting at the table and setting the camera with staff, answering the questions about films and film festival from audiences or people who may be just passing by and get interested by the booklets or poster. Some people were particularly interested in the local film. Some people were interested in I Used To Be Funny (2023), even though it has shown sold-out online, they still came offline to check if there is really no chance 1 hour before the screening. Some audiences were asking our opinions, suggestion or recommendation of films. And some people just wanted to know a bit more about the Inner West Film Festival, such as what kind of films still available, because they heave never heard about this.
Then I went up and down, helped the staff to check if everything has been set. Before the screening, I took some photos of volunteers and audiences talking and taking free Gin. After the screening, the staff said that he would send me some sample of videos of other film festivals for social media to learn how to edit and what kind of video they want later.
Today, I heard people talking about National Film Day. National Canadian Film Day is April 17th. I Used To Be Funny is one of the Canadian films brought by the National Canadian Film Day which shows the diverse Canadian culture. However, there is no National Australian Film Day. That’s why Australian film makers and cultural trendsetters want to discuss the efficacy of instating an Australian National Film Day. I was inspired to search, then found out: there is no National Film Day in China too.

Day 3
Date: April 14th, Sunday
Event: Short Film Package 1
Location: Palace Cinema (99 Norton St, Leichhardt NSW 2040)
Tumblr media
There was a new indoor location today. I brought the FX30 camera to film the interaction between people, such as audiences, film makers, crews, actors and actresses. Many people came to take photos, even asked if we would be still here after the Short Film Package 1.
While we were shooting photos and videos for people, a person came to ask if a girl who we just shot is an actress of film and which film it is. Interesting. Celebrity effect.
Short Film Package 1 was really popular. Though Inner West Film Festival has announced that is sold-out very early, some people still came to ask if there are any tickets available, even an actress of a short film came to ask, if she can go inside to watch. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do, the number of seats inside is fixed.
I felt this kind of short film package attracting more people than other individual film screenings. And people actually need to plan well for watching the films in the film festival, because there are actually multiple films screening at the same time at different cinema. Audiences need to make decisions and plan well for buying tickets online.
For documenting Inner West Film Festival, I also shot the videos of the environment in different angles on the stairs towards the second floor, for example people lined up to get food and drinks, audiences lined up to enter the cinema.
The ice cream in this cinema is unexpectedly more expensive than the outdoor screening's.
I noticed all the short films don’t have English subtitles. I learnt that they usually only made subtitles for film in foreign language. Even in this case, it will only be the monolingual subtitle, instead of the bilingual subtitle, which is more common in China. So I tried to search more information about film festivals in China, including the vlog of audiences who went to many film festivals, essay videos about the development and history of different international film festival.

Day 2
Date: April 12th, Friday
Event: Opening Night
Location: Steel Park Marrickille (531-565 Illawarra Rd, Marrickville NSW 2204)
Tumblr media
The location of this outdoor event was initially set at Marrickville Golf Club. However, the weather really has huge influence on the outdoor event. Due to the torrential rain over the past couple of days, there has literally been turned into a pond. The Outdoor screening has been cancelled once. We just knew that Inner West Film Festival arranged a new location for this outdoor screening at Steel Park Marrickille in the morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the preparation, I helped the staff to set up the light and the canvas over the metal poles for people who would like to take photos and post online to show they came to Inner West Film Festival. However, we found that there were not enough extension cables for the lights. Luckily, the battery could be taken off, the lines were actually longer than we thought.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The food and drinks there are really expensive too. Many audiences seemed to prepared well for this film festival. They brought their own food and drinks, also the chairs or other things to sit on.
Before the screening, I was giving the booklets to the audience. Some people were unhappy, because the booklets were made of trees, and said "I care about trees". Probably Inner West Film Festival could print less booklet next year, and promote electronic version, online or shown on a big screen, so people can take photos by their phones.
I was shooting videos about many interactive moments between people, such as film makers, crews, actors and actresses, staffs and audiences, also documenting their reaction to the speech before the screening and how they all were concentrating on the film. Then I stayed and watched all the films.
After the screening, volunteers and I were giving these cards about the later event to the audience who were going to leave. In the end, I took all my equipment, camera and SD Cards back, and were asked to send them all the videos via google driver.
Tumblr media
Today, I learnt that the Inner West Film Festival with Pitching Competition is actually not only a competition, but helping and supporting the emerging young film makers to keep creating new films, providing them a chance to be seen and communicate with each other. I also heard that the films which were selected to be played in the Inner West Film Festival will get a copyright fee, how the Film Festivals in Taiwan and Beijing select the films are different from Inner West Film Festival. Some people are wondering if the chosen films were produced, made or connected to people who organized the film festival, could the copyright fee be saved for them to spend on other things or the people will get benefit from it.

Day 1
Date: April 11th, Thursday
Event: Pitching Competition
Location: Actors Center Australia (23 Norton Street, Italian Forum, Shop 30 A Italian Forum Performance Precinct, Leichhardt NSW 2040)
Tumblr media
Before the event, the staff of Inner West Film Festival sent us the photos of Juries for us and volunteers to be familiar. In the morning, I went to DMU for borrowing the equipment, FX30 Camera, Tripod and Rode Mic.
After we arrived, we put all the equipment, bags and personal belongings inside the staff room. Then we helped them to carry some boxes of booklets, clothes, bags and other merchandise made for film festival this year from their car at the parking area to the Actors Center, then set the booklets on the tables in the Actors Center for people who came and may be interested in those films to plan and book tickets online. After giving each of us a black T-shirt with Inner West Film Fest, we went to set up the camera and other equipment.
Before the Pitching Competition, we tried to interview some audiences and film makers (though got rejected a few times), also captured the interactive moments between people to show this is a very popular and successful event: Staffs and volunteers were working hard. People were gathering as crowds, talking and enjoying the drinks. Film makers and producers were talking, and hugged rarely.
During the Pitching Competition, I listened all the pitching and tried to remember all the pitching team while filming them from where the audiences were sitting. In the beginning of the Pitching Competition, I forgot to turn the mic on. Luckily, this will not affect much to the video of highlight of this event for social media. But this kind of situation did not happen again. After the Pitching Competition, we tried to interview all the pitching team. Though there were too many people, we just couldn’t find everyone, we tried to find them and ask if they would like to accept a short interview to talk about their films and themselves.
Hope next year's film festival will be able to provide a room for interviewing the pitching team and arrange a time schedule for this. So people can set the camera, tripod, mic and lighting better.

NOBODY WITH A JOB READS THE REPUBLIC | Terry Guannan Hou
RAM | Sean McCallum
After the Pitching Competition, I was mostly interested in BIRD HANDS BEAVER A FISHMINT BOUQUET, ECHO 8 and NOBODY WITH A JOB READS THE REPUBLIC. "Pain travels through families until someone is ready to feel it" used by Kim Pham in her pitching, probably not only hits my heart, but hearts of many people with Asian family background. I felt like more and more people in Asia or have Asian background start to realize the importance of mental health and the problem with family which was rarely talked and discussed in public before. So many film makers started to make this kind of film to reveal the problem, encourage the audiences who were facing the similar situation or problem to make change or just comfort them.
About ECHO 8, the speaker, Maria Tran actually left deeper impression on me than the trailer of her film. She was really confident about herself and her films, showed her passion and ambition, convincing the listener that she knows what she is doing and she will be succeed.
NOBODY WITH A JOB READS THE REPUBLIC is quite interesting with amazing beautiful storyboard which delivers the tone of this story well. I was actually quite surprised that Terry Guannan Hou was studied economics instead of Bachelor of Visual Arts or Master of Film and Screen Arts in USYD.
Before leaving, I gave the SD cards and Tripod to the staff of Inner West Film Festival for Day 2 Opening Night.
By the way, the drinks were really expensive.

If Japan poured million tons of Nuclear Sewage from the Fukushima Nuclear Power Station into the sea, the radioactive substance, which will damage the marine environment and the humans' healthy, only needs about 57 days to spread the most of the Pacific Ocean.
The fossil oil which is poured into the sea through various ways is over 6 million tons per year. After the water surface is covered by the oil, massive marine lives will die, due to lack of oxygen.
About 10 million tons plastic garbage that flowed into the sea per year. If the pollution keeps going, the total weight of the plastic garbage in the sea may be more than the fish's by 2050.
