Years of balancing the scale, of internalizing my suffering. Of learning to puke without puking, whatever that meant. That was the price for living in a world full of magic. A price I should be happy to pay….because a world without Stephen Strange would still be a world, he said. But a world without magic….would be no kind of world at all.

Stephen had went out for a walk, deciding it was best to not cause any trouble for the time being. Not because he cared, more because that would take effort that he did not want to give. He had stopped by a few stores, shopping for some darker, more fashionable attire. Looking at his closet now, he felt as though he was looking at his father’s clothing and that put a bad taste in his mouth.
He walked out of the store, slipping on his newly purchased leather jacket, and for some reason felt a bit more like himself in it. After a moment or two, he decided to stroll through the park across the street, not even realizing where he was until he saw Ed, sitting there...Then he realized. Oh. I see.
The magician approached, his hands shoved in his pockets as he cleared his throat. “Feeling a bit sentimental, are we?”
Tumblr media
Ed sat alone on a park bench. The very same one he was sitting at when Stephen had met him for the second time. When he had bandaged his wrists for him. He turned to an empty page in his journal and started sketching question marks in the crease. Giving him something to focus his mind on.
“Sitting here isn’t going to bring him back. This is stupid. You’re wasting our time.” He could hear Riddler and tried to ignore him, even as his hallucination sat down on the park bench next to him. “If you’re just going to sulk…”
“Shut up.” He said out loud. Forgetting that he was in a public area where just anyone could hear him. “I don’t want to be you.” He said a little louder, leaning forward and trying to focus on the sketching.

Taking a step away from the body, Sofia tilted her head and watched her father carefully. Looking at his profile while wondering if the dark magic had finally consumed him — if he had finally given in to the temptations of the dark. It looked like it had, but even in Sofia’s current state, she wasn’t sure if she trusted that. “Magic would be cleaner,” Sofia agreed as she looked down at the blood covering the steps. “But there is just something satisfying about using a knife,” but after what Daisy had said on the radio — maybe she would start using her magic for things like this. Especially if she had her father’s blessing to do so. Sofia had always been so skittish around her own magic, but the last few days, hell, the last month she had been using her magic more and more, falling into a strange comfort with her own magic. Finally.
“What spell?” Sofia looked at the ground where her father had gestured, “A levitation spell. I could separate the blood from the concrete based on density, right?”
Tumblr media
Stephen wasn’t completely sure how his daughter got in this state, but he did know that it was a bit more helpful this way, considering the fact that the darkness within him had completely taken over. At least she wouldn’t be fussing over him. When she suggested a levitation spell, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. “Very good.” he stepped back a bit, his arms crossed over his chest. “I’m glad I finally get give you lessons. I knew you were capable. You’re my daughter after all.” He looked down at the blood on the pavement. “You have a strong power. Show it to me.” he nodded towards the blood, waiting. This was definitely going to be interesting. He thought maybe perhaps Sofia had become more interested in her powers since this obvious change in her as well.

riddle-me-that‌:
He listened to him ramble on and on about the negative parts of him. All of it seemed to him, had an easy solution. He was probably a distraction to Stephen. His important job should have been keeping him busy and instead he was spending time having to deal with his boyfriend. Having to tend to Ed and having to go on dates… being shot because of him. It was all Ed’s fault. He was sure of it, and that was fine, really. Stephen couldn’t handle the burden of Ed’s mental issues right now.
When Stephen showed him his true face, the black oozing from his eyes- Ed nearly threw up. He quickly glanced away, sickened with the memories of the hallucination he had of Stephen the night he was shot. The blood pouring from his mouth and onto the floor. Thick and black. He placed a hand on his mouth like he would be sick, only his stomach was empty and his throat was so dry and sore. “And yet you somehow kept all of that from me. Just like how I kept the hallucinations from you.” He grumbled before very quickly adding on, “Can you… conceal that again? I can’t look at it.” He murmured.
Tumblr media
“Well… if you feel like I drained you dry then-” He cut himself off, “I don’t know. Stephen. Just- leave. I’m a burden to you right now. I’ll move my things out when I’m out of the hospital. Just… leave me alone. I don’t want to see you anymore.”
Stephen looked at him, and he wanted to argue. He wanted to tell him that wasn’t the reason these things were happening. He wanted to tell him that Ed was worth all of these things, but then...he didn’t. Stephen, concealed his true face again, leaning back in his chair as he listened to Ed speak. He should want to say something, but...You don’t need to say anything. You should leave him. He stood up, straightening his clothing. He looked away, not able to help the small amount of sadness he felt at this situation. He reached into his pocket, even though the item he was reaching for appeared in his hand, rather than it sitting in said pocket. Lifting a shaking hand, he placed the object on the nightstand.
A small, almost completely used roll of bandages. He didn’t need any of this. I was selfish. He thought, for himself for once as he headed to the door, opening it and leaving swiftly, trying to ignore the ache in his chest.

I’ll fix that.

Stephen had heard of the new chemist that had arrived not too long ago, and that put some great ideas into his head. Stephen couldn’t do way too much carnage with his magic, due to The Vishanti keeping a watchful eye on him, so he would have to rely on old fashioned very human ways to have a bit of fun.
He noticed that the building was closed, but Stephen could detect movement inside. He knocked on the door, feeling slightly annoyed at the closed sign, and then the voice coming through. Of course. He knocked a few more times, and when the door swung open he smirked, crossing his arms. “I don’t make appointments.” he chuckled at his words, “Ah, I just saw you were new in town. Thought I might welcome you to the neighborhood and all that.”
Tumblr media
His lab was small, and perhaps untidy to the common eye – though of course, he knew precisely where everything was. It was a bit rundown, compared to what he had once worked in, but more important than any of that – it was private. But his ‘customers’ had been known to follow him back, hang around outside his door, begging for more than they could afford. So the knock at his door didn’t completely surprise him.
Mostly, it annoyed him. “You’ll have to make an appointment,” he called irritably. But the rapping continued, utterly destroying his concentration, and he slammed his hands on the table. “What?” he said, wrenching the door open. His voice was flat, monotone, a little eerie. “Can I be of some service to you, or are you merely trying to aggravate me?”

Stephen had been deciding if he should go car shopping today, considering his lamborgini was very much out of date, when he bumped into someone. The darkness inside him wanted to yell, but that would be so much energy wasted. He was about to say something he probably wouldn’t regret later, when he saw who exactly it was he bumped into. “Clea.” he licked at his lips. “Late, as always, I see.” he muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets. “How is your dimension fairing? I hope you gave everyone my best wishes and all that.” he spoke harshly. “You missed a lot while you were gone.” Stephen commented, his head tilting to the side. “I hope you aren’t too confused. I mentored you after all. I’m sure you can sense it.”
Tumblr media
Guilt consumed Clea as she stepped out of her portal, back onto the streets of Manhattan. She’d only gone back to the Dark Dimension to clear up a few problems, but Earth had needed her more, and she didn’t even realize until it was too late. Everything was back to normal now, thanks to some hardworking heroes, but she knew that she’d screwed up. If she’d been here, things might’ve ended sooner rather than later. With a heavy heart and a sigh, Clea made her way towards her newly bought apartment and tripped as she walked. Luckily, she used her magic in time, saving herself from hitting the hard ground, but accidentally bumping into the person walking in front of her instead. “Sorry, I lost my balance. Are you alright?”

riddle-me-that‌:
Ed narrowed his gaze at the man. He didn’t get it at all, did he? He wasn’t there for Isabella when she needed him. Why should he be there for him? Why should he carry any belief that Stephen would be alright with his deuterating mental state? Especially when Stephen was so busy with his own issues. Issues he didn’t like to show him at all. He bit the inside of his cheek. “Maybe I don’t.” He hissed under his breath. “You don’t seem to let me see any negative side of you.” He watched as Stephen seemed more and more annoyed with him. Annoyed that he had to say that he loved him over and over again. Like it was some kind of chore. He opened his mouth to snap back at him, to shout the complaint that it shouldn’t be so hard to reassure him that sometimes but his throat felt dry and wrong, the words just couldn’t leave his mouth. Stephen finished talking and he wasn’t sure what he meant by run out of options. Was he just done with him now? Because he was sick? He wasn’t sure what to think. He felt angry, and upset and his chest felt tight.
“So we’re done then?” He finally got out. Glancing away from Stephen.
Tumblr media
Stephen looked at him, hard. His resolve was slipping very fast, and he couldn’t stop. “You want to know negative? I’ve got plenty of negative things I could show you.” he was getting angry now. “I’m a failure. I’m pathetic. I barely get by at my job.” He bit his tongue for a moment, trying to stop himself. Show him who you really are, Stephen. He ran a hand down his face, the magic disappearing and leaving the real state of his face behind. “This. You want to know how I got out of the hospital so quickly?” he wiped the black that ran down his cheeks, “I used black magic. It’s been eating at my soul for weeks now.” he crossed his arms. “What else? I have lost complete control of my authority as Sorcerer Supreme. I’m a laughing stock. I’m days away from being called in by The Vishanti and stripped of my magic. I’m terrified every day of my life of winding up alone. I have nightmares almost every damn night.” He felt a small amount of tears slipping through the black, creating clean paths. Pathetic. “I’m pathetic.” He watched as Ed’s face hardened, and he licked at his lips. “I suppose we were both dishonest with each other.” he grumbled, looking away when he spoke last.

Stephen hadn’t even bothered answering the door. It was so quiet in the sanctum now, and most nights he would just float in silence, feeling nothing. Now that he no longer cared about duty and responsibility, he wasn’t sure what to do with his free time. His cloak, however, had been a mess ever since this first started. He had argued with the damned relic, and tried to explain that he was fine. Which was a lie, of course.
When the knock sounded through the empty halls, he let out an annoyed sigh, the cloak now placing itself on Stephen’s shoulders and dragging him down the stairs. “Let go of me you-” he grunted as he was thrown against the wall right next to the front door. He tsked, his expression cold. “I’m going to donate you to charity I swear.” he muttered, before opening the wood door to a familiar face. “I know you.” he murmured. “but I’m done dealing with other people’s problems. I’m retired.” he nodded to the sign he had placed over his address.

It was bad. Whatever this girl did to her wasn’t something her body could heal like always. She heard this inside her head, louder and louder.
Let me out. I want to smash.
Jennifer managed to control Shulkie long time ago, but now the green one tried to scratch her way out in the surface harder than ever.  It was the witch, this damned witch. She thought they were friends. How wrong she was.
There was only one place Jennifer could go looking for help in that situation- the Sanctum Sanctorum. She pounded the door, hoping someone was there.
“Doctor Strange. I need Doctor Strange,” she said when the door finally opened. She didn’t even look who it was. “I was hexed, and I’m losing control over something  that can survive a nuke and wants to destroy the entire city.”

sofiastranges‌:
Looking at her father, Sofia had expected a different reaction — even in the state that she was in she had expected some shock, maybe even some yelling, but her father was so calm. She stared at him for a moment expecting something to change but then he, so matter-of-factly, told her that the body needed to be moved. “Oh.” That was an unexpected answer but Stephen was right, leaving the body out in the open would be foolish and it was on the steps of the Sanctum. Sofia brushed off her pants as she stood up and then placed her hands on her hips, wondering if the dark magic had finally consumed him. It was strange — that thought only days ago would have bothered Sofia, but in this moment, it was like it didn’t matter. What was good and evil when the world was already ripping itself apart?
Her eyes flickered back down to the corpse at her feet and then up at her father, “You’re right,” she said in a whisper. “Any suggestions?” The last one she had simply rid herself of it using magic, but she wasn’t ready to reveal that to her father just yet. Sofia wanted to know just how far gone her father was before she opened up about the other horrors she had participated in.
Tumblr media
Stephen walked closer, looking at the body and the pool of blood surrounding it. “I’ll take care of it.” he spoke softly, removing the gloves from his hands. As he stepped forward, he wondered if any of his past self was left. What all had the darkness inside him consumed? Then he realized, he didn’t really care all that much. He walked up the stairs halfway, making sure not to step in the pooling liquid. “Stabbing is a bit messy, though. I would think you’d use your magic to kill him. A lot quicker and easier clean up.” he held his hand out, the shaking still very apparent as he simply made the body disappear, looking as though it disintegrated. All that was left now was the stairs. Before this, he would have been unwilling to use his magic for something like this. His magic was sacred and something to be used for serious issues. He remembered getting by in everyday life by using cheap charms and potions. Now, he felt more free to use this power he had earned himself to its full potential.
He thought then, that this would be a good time to test his daughter, and how she stood with her magic. “What should we do? What spell do you think would best fit this situation?” he gestured calmly towards the blood soaked concrete.

riddle-me-that‌:
A shiver ran down Ed’s spine when Stephen asked if he’d tried before. He was brought back to that moment in his mind. His overwhelming love and adoration for Lee and his fear of repeating the cycle. Of killing someone he cared about. The feeling of utter exhaustion and anger as he tied the noose and hung it up, like he was doing it to spite himself. Slipping the rope around his throat. He remembered, it was scratchy and tough against his skin. He wasn’t all that scared, taking a few steps downwards to his possible death. It was something Ed felt he had to do. It was a last resort. He didn’t want to do it… but he couldn’t let Riddler out again.
He paused. “Uh…” Ed whispered. “Yes. I have tried before… but I didn’t go through with the attempt.” He said, like it made things any better. He licked his lips, a habit he might have picked up from Stephen. Ed glanced away from him, like he was ashamed. “I didn’t want you to send me away.” He answered. “I know you wouldn’t have put me in Arkham, but… maybe you’d put me somewhere else. Some other mental institution. I know I’m a lot to handle…”
Tumblr media
Stephen kept silent as he spoke, not able to look away from his hands. His answers hurt, even if Ed didn’t mean to cause him pain. He watched his hands tremble, and he couldn’t help but rub them together. He swallowed, as if he could stop himself from continuing this conversation. “You really thought that.” he closed his eyes. “Do you not know me at all?” he looked up at him, his brows furrowed, giving a questioning look. “Why would I do that? How many times do I have to tell you-” he looked away, feeling suddenly frustrated. He carded his fingers through his hair, trying to calm down but there was so much he wanted to say. “I’m never going to be able to convince you.” he stated, as if it was a sure fact. “You’re never going to realize that I love all of you. I’ve tried so hard to get you to see that. I-” he held his hands out for a moment, “I’ve run out of options. I don’t know what else I can do to get you to see that.” he knew that he was going too fast, and rushing his words, but it was like a part of him split open. “All this time we’ve dated...we’ve stayed stuck in this same place. I thought maybe...” he let out a sigh, leaning back in his chair, defeated. “I don’t know what I thought.”

Stephen had tried to hurry home, wanting to avoid the chaos that was surrounding New York that night. It had taken him a while to find a safe spot to summon a portal, but he eventually succeeded. He wondered if any of this could get past his defenses that he had placed on the Sanctum, but then disregarded it in his mind. His magic was strong enough. Is it, Stephen? Do you still think you’re all that powerful? We both know different. He blatantly ignored the voice in his head as he rushed through his portal. He could fix this.
The first thing he saw was a dying man, bleeding and gasping for air that he could not fill his lungs with. Then, above him was Sofia. His daughter. So many things went through his mind. As he watched his child wipe away blood from the knife she had a few moments ago used on this now dead corpse...He should feel disgust. Anger. But he barely felt phased, and that’s when he realized that he was too far gone. You see now. I am you. “Hello. Yes, it’s protected.” he walked towards the stairs, pausing at the pool of blood and it’s source. “He’ll have to be moved.” he stated casually, his voice not showing any sign of panic or fear at all as it had these past weeks.

Standing on the steps leading to the front door of the Sanctum, Sofia was looking down at the man who had been banging on door, trying to get inside. Letting out a small sigh, Sofia leaned over and pulled the knife from the man’s chest, ignoring the gagging sounds the man made as she cleaned the knife on his shirt and then slipped it back into her boot. Seeing a shadow on the sidewalk, Sofia looked up to see her father standing only a few feet away.  “Hey dad,” she offered him a small smile before standing up and looking out at the street, the strange nightmares still prowling the streets. “The Sanctum is protected right? Those things can’t get in?”
