what's that one thing where they asked how ripely from alien was so realistic and believable as a female character in scifi for once and they were like "well we just took the dude from the original script and made him a girl and changed nothing else. it works bc men and women are the same?" and people were like "woah no way" and then didn't learn anything from that for 20 years

Hi, I want to get into animated superhero TV shows, but I really don't know where to start. Do you have any suggestions?
Also sorry if this has been asked before lol
For DC:
Batman: The Animated Series! Where it all began. This is the show that launched the DC animated universe and locked in definitive performances of Batman and the Joker. Has a movie, Mask of the Phantasm, which is extremely worth watching. Individual episode quality can vary somewhat significantly, but most of it is solid.
Tumblr media
Batman Beyond! Original and self-contained, a sequel series to B:TAS. Decades after Batman vanishes, a young protege is trained by old Bruce Wayne. Very few bad episodes. One of my favorites. Also has a movie that's really good.
Tumblr media
Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited! Partially built on Superman: The Animated Series which is also fine but not specifically on my rec list - while that show has its moments it never held together as well as B:TAS. JL and JLU are excellent ensemble shows that put these superheroes into a team for the first time and lets them play off each other in fascinating ways. JLU features a dramatically expanded roster but manages to keep the original cast central to the story. This is the culmination of the interconnected animated universe the other shows were building up to, but the DC animated options aren't limited to this space.
Tumblr media
Teen Titans! Quite different from the comics run it's ostensibly based on; characters are de-aged, anime-fied and subjected to whimsical teen hijinks. That said, extremely charming with some very impactful emotional highs and lows. I love a story that can swing from goofy comedy to crushing drama, and at its best, this show does that very well. It's also quite well known.
Tumblr media
Legion of Super-Heroes! I and three other people on earth have watched this show, but it's an excellent intro to the weirder shit in the DC universe. The superheroes of the 31st century travel back in time to get the help and guidance of history's greatest hero, but they're a little too early - Clark Kent hasn't even left Smallville yet. Shenanigans ensue. Episodic, extremely unafraid to tap into the Bonkers Wackness of the Legion of Superheroes, but it does work best if you already have a cursory understanding of how Superman works so you can get the fun dramatic irony of watching Clark very slowly figure it out for himself. Also unironically has the jazziest banger opening of all time.
Tumblr media
My Adventures With Superman! Very new, comparatively speaking, and totally standalone. A very good take on Superman that plays on a lot of the established versions we've already seen - a younger, more vulnerable, less self-assured take on Clark Kent in his very early days of figuring out who he is and how he works. Unrelentingly kind. Lots of things I really like in the animation with how they portray his powers, even in Civilain Mode - he's not yet any good at pretending to be ordinary, and it's a really interesting take on his vibes. Also contains media's most neurodivergent Supergirl in season 2.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentions: Green Lantern the animated series if you really want to get emotionally invested in an angry angst boy figuring out he's in love with a spaceship while Hal Jordan is also there. Superman Vs The Elite if you wanna see Superman get scary for a minute. Young Justice season 1 if you want only the good parts. Static Shock for a completely solid DC superhero show that's just not as tied in with the rest of the DCAU.
For Marvel:
X-Men Evolution, the marvel poster child equivalent of Teen Titans for "not really even slightly like the source material because everyone is a lot younger and their personalities are all scrambled but Who Cares?" Word of warning that the season 1 finale is inexplicably extremely bad. Character driven in all the most emotionally dramatic ways. If you watched any anime dubbed in the 90s to 2000s you will recognize way more voices than you expect to. One of my favorite versions of Wolverine. They only sort of get to operate as a team because of all the Drama and stuff but that means some very solid episodes that focus on only a handful of characters at a time.
Tumblr media
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Season one is a perfect arc of television. Season two is more wobbly with some episodes being downright baffling in places, but there's still a lot of good stuff in there it pulls it back together for a very good grand finale. For a take on the Marvel universe almost entirely separate from the one taken by the MCU, this is an excellent angle of approach. My favorite take on Captain America, and also this show likes Thor almost as much as I do.
Tumblr media
Spectacular Spider-Man! Tragically cut short, but so good while we had it. Animation style takes a little getting used to. Not episodic - tells a well-planned linear story front to back, but ends on a bit of a cliffhanger because cancellation. Extremely good showing for the bad guys, and this version of Peter is no slouch either.

My husband has tumblr notifications on for me so he's going to see this and be like oh my god she's still ranting about this she's really going through it and yes babe I am but I keep seeing videos of people online in utter disbelief the My Chemical Romance is being political and theatrical and I am so confused at the fact that these people heard the fucking lyrics "Your misery and hate will kill us all" AND COULDN'T APPLY IT EVEN A LITTLE BIT TO THE CURRENT SITUATION WE FIND OURSELVES IN
