The heart is deceitfully wicked

Memory verse:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

"Above all things" means that the number one characteristic of the heart is that it is deceitful.

This is why it is foolish to "follow your heart"

“He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool…” (Proverbs 28:26)

Your own heart will deceive you

Then the scriptures say that the heart is not just wicked, but desperately wicked

DESPERATE - Without care of safety; rash; fearless of danger

The heart pursues wickedness with reckless abandon

Jesus confirmed this truth by stating that all evil proceeds from the heart

“21. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22. Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23. All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.” (Mark 7:21-23)

This is the root of the problem for all mankind: the heart

This means that all solutions to corruption which do not deal with the heart will fail

The only solution is getting a new heart

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26)

This happens at the moment of salvation when someone repents and puts their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
