Those who hate Andy Warhol don’t get what it means to be a young, lonely queer kid who grows up loving pop figures in the media as a way of finding joy and escapism. He grew up to become a phenomenal artist, not because his skills were particularly remarkable (though they should be acknowledged), but because he was one of the very first to depict modern pop culture and idolatry as it was being born right before his eyes, the first to take a dramatic picture of the obsession of beauty and consumerism— whether he wanted to criticise them or just portray them, the first to be entranced by this new machine outside called the entertainment industry, so much so that he dedicated his whole artistic career to try and capture it.
He did all of this in such a dramatic and ostentatious manner, so in-your-face, so interesting and obsessive that it’s hard not to notice and appreciate. He may have been more famous than other deserving artists, but there is a reason for that, and there’s a genius behind that reason.
People who don’t see this bore me.
All this to say I’ve just finished watching Poor Little Rich Girl (directed by Andy ofc), and if you’re into rare avant garde cinema, I’ve got a link for you ♡ (don’t worry about viruses, it’s YouTube)
