MIA dedication to Amy Winehouse
I met Amy Winehouse while I was living in Camden. I had been chatting with her Mom(?) at a restaurant I was working at (I didn't realize it was her mom) and I remember people abruptly began chatting and whispering to each other. In walks a version of the beautiful woman on the Back to Black album cover. Only this woman was about a foot shorter, very wrinkly, caked with make-up and had horrible bulbous fake breasts. It took me a few moments to realize that it was Amy Winehouse. She was definitely a character, charming, charismatic and full of animus. She was inhumanly full of energy, talking a mile a minute.
The one thing I will always remember however was when one woman with her husband and baby pulled out a camera and was readying to take a picture of Winehouse. Amy stood up and had a look on her face that I couldn't make out. I could only guess anger, I've seen celebrities tell off fans for taking pictures before. No, Amy walked over and very graciously grabbed the camera from the woman, sat in their booth and took pictures with them, holding the camera herself. Following that she sat and chatted with their baby in her arms for about fifteen minutes.
Amy didn't stay to eat with her mom, she was just stopping in to say hello. On her exit she suddenly sprung to life due to the 50's song coming through the sound system and exclaimed to me "this is my jam!" and danced for about thirty seconds then left.
In the half hour that I met her she made a huge impression, at first it was honestly disturbing to see someone so talented and beautiful who I had only seen in music videos appear in front of me and look so worn and I'm assuming on some kind of drug. It was a sadness and compassion that I didn't think I would feel for someone I had no attachments to let alone one that is held so high up in our society. However I've rarely seen anyone be so kind and genuinely interested in complete strangers, granted they were her fans but she went above and beyond. It was a brief encounter but it seems like she lived passionately and with good intentions. A sad loss due to much over-romanticized addictive behaviours.
She'll be missed and with good reason.
