I just checked on this blog and several of my old small screaming shark drawings have been flagged as containing adult content.
Uhh.
Small screaming sharks are now too mature for tumblr apparently.

The Book of Prunicorns
So an old friend and I went out to very fancy afternoon tea today. On the way there, we had a discussion about Prunicorns (princess unicorns). In the gift shop were these incredibly fancy tiny notebooks, that turned out to be weirdly cheap. What are they for? Obviously for drawing tiny stories about Prunicorns! We purchased one and passed it back and forth while having our fancy tea. This is the result.

To be continued... (the next time my friend and I go get lunch together.)

Long time no post here!
So... the second year of the art challenge ended a few days ago.
And I actually succeeded, sort of. The last few months sort of devolved into a lot of very crappy uninspired scribbles and short bits of writing. May scan and post some of it sometime, but thereās not a lot of good stuff to post. Have been very busy with work and lacking in both time and drawing inspiration.
So going to be mixing things up for this year. The challenge for myself from Sept 20 2017-2018 is NOT to draw every day, but instead to think quality over quantity, and to follow inspiration. Also to find and go to at least 6 life drawing sessions during the year.

Fotogenerator Pix2Pix
Online neural network Pix2Pix webtoy appears to visually translate your drawings into style of portrait images (Iām guessing here, as sources and documentation are not apparent).
Try it out for yourself here

4/16/17: Oh no.
Fun with a neural net that transforms line drawings to cats
So thereās a neural network framework called pix2pixĀ that can be trained to learn how to transform one type of image into another. Itās been used for example to convert satellite images into line drawings and vice versa (think Google maps satellite view vs the one that show boxes where all the buildings are). Thereās also trained version of pix2pix that converts a block drawing to a building facade (although it tends to make the building facades into creepy post-apocalyptic burnt-out shells).
Less useful but arguably even more creepy is the version by Christopher Hesse that turns line drawings into cats.
He trained it on about 2000 stock photos of cats that he ran through an edge-detection filter - he used the edge-detected (line drawing) versions as the starting image, and the original image as the ending image. The neural network then learned to convert from the line drawings into the original cat photographs.
The result? A neural network that tries to make ANY line drawing into a photo of a cat. And, gloriously, you can play with it in your browser here. Here are some results Iāve produced.
Here, it was able to turn my primitive trackpad-drawn scribble into a furry cat, complete with fluffy underbelly. Not bad, neural network.
But, if required, the neural network can make do with less. The results get increasingly creepy, though.
The neural network has not been trained on roosters. The network has only been trained on cats. 12/10 Excellent bright-eyed cat. Would stroke its strange furry head-crest.
This is a strange grabby cat, but at least the neural network has identified the eyes.
Ears? Check. Eyes? Check. Fluffy underbelly? Check. Next!

4/7/17: Super quick doodle.
We killed the final boss of Borderlands 1 in our second playthrough and this time it had way too goshdang many hit points. Enough that Lilith got bored halfway through and started saying her idle dialogue, hahahahaha.
Luckily we had a legendary revolver with infinite respawning ammo.
And Bloodwing just had no idea what the heck was going on.

3/22/17: Still drawing every day in the sketchbook!
But today... I drew a small screaming shark at work! And then I left it at work. There is now a small screaming shark at work.

3/?/17: Giant dump of things from the sketchbook!
Last two are wips that I am still poking at.
Whole lot of Borderlands fan doodles.
Really enjoying this not-hiatus! Still drawing and doing the challenge, but itās good to get a change of pace. Finding myself a lot more likely to actually try and poke at a drawing in progress instead of just drawing a crappy shark if Iām tired. Drawing more people, too, which is something I want to get back into more.
Did take two days off, one due to brain blahs and the other because was up late working on the gem necklaces for our etsy shop.
Probably going to continue this for a while. Still here, still drawing, just not posting every day, will scan and post another batch in the future when I feel like it.

3/4/17: Large yelling whale. Because @nanofishology sent me this: https://www.hakaimagazine.com/article-short/why-whales-leap-air
(Have been drawing in physical sketchbook every other day this week! Itās been a good change of pace and I think itās helping me get out of a drawing rut a bit. Still need to scan everything.)

Posting from the sketchbook
I have been drawing today and yesterday! More Borderlands sketches stuff.
Going to change a few things. When Iām drawing in my physical sketchbook, and especially on days where Iāve worked on etsy stuff a ton, I find myself all excited when drawing then tuckered out when night comes around and really dreading having to scan and post stuff before bed, and having executive functioning problems that make it so it takes a while to do it, which delays bedtime, which is bad because we suck at sleep sometimes, etc. Itās easy enough to post stuff when Iām already working on it digitally, but posting from physical sketchbook has more steps. This challenge is about having fun drawing, not making myself dread posting stuff. :P
tl;dr New rule: If I draw in a physical sketchbook, I donāt have to post it that day, it still counts as long as I eventually scan or take photos and post it. That way I can scan and post things from my sketchbook all at once in a batch when I have the spoons for it.
Was sort of naturally doing this with some of the Borderlands sketches already, posting a few days of stuff at once, and it really does make it a lot easier.

2/23/17: Pokemon breeding and battling and drawing!

Finally beat Moon version and now time for some Pokemon breeding and pvp battling! Super happy with this Honedge I bred today. Raised and EV trained and is now a great competitive Aegislash! I screwed up a bit with the last Aegislash I bred, didnāt realize how important low speed was until I used him in battle for a while. Now his daughter can carry on his legacy, just⦠much⦠more⦠slowlyā¦
Weāre also fighting in the 2017 International Challenge February thatās happening online through this weekend. Unfortunately canāt take my new Aegislash or my Lunala with me, and donāt have another competitive ghost in Moon version yet for the 6th slot on our team, so Bwark the Primarina is filling in. So close to being mono-ghost! If you run into a trainer named Frey with a team thatās a whole bunch of ghosts and one pretty seal, thatās me!
