okay but why did it feel like rtd was undermining chib's writing with that tone-deaf read of thasmin he threw in there? like, we know this. we know that the doctor loved yaz. we know that yaz clearly knew this. you know why we know this? because chibnall knew how to do subtext right. we were fed thasmin, we watched both the doctor and yaz come to terms with their feelings for each other in real. time. the doctor, socially awkward as ever in her thirteenth regeneration, was even able to express to yaz why it wouldn't work between them, even though she wanted it. she didn't say I love you, but it was implied in every interaction, that was the whole point.

and to have thirteen say that she should tell yaz - to admit that even to herself - just misses the whole point in my opinion. this is the kind of writing you expect to see in a comic relief special or the between-the-scenes mini-sodes moffat was so fond of. it feels like rtd threw this in to be like, hey, look, another surface-level acknowledgement of the source material I barely skimmed! (more like another talking point that will blow up on social media and keep the episode in the conversation for longer). whoever first said that rtd has been writing this show like tiktok clips waiting to go viral was right on the money.

as much as i loved seeing jodie again, rtd absolutely did not even try to write the thirteenth doctor properly.

Speaking of, the idea of the doctor being self aware regarding the power dynamic between themself and their companions is honestly very funny to me. Like ok I'm in a position of power over this person for various reasons so I will NOT pursue a romantic relationship with them on ethical grounds 😇 we will simply have a bizarre co-dependent pseudo-romantic friendship that will alter the course of their entire life instead

Anyway here’s a post of when 13 smiles in a way that triggers my fight or flight response

I HIGHLY recommend all of you to read this post and read some of the comments. It talks a lot about consent in this era (or lack of it) and the SA implications. In addition there is a conversation about adoption and foster care system conversation. I honestly thought of the same things esp compared to chibnall's era where 13 not only asked for consent (unless it's life or death situation or something REALLY urgent) but also had a really good conversation regarding parenthood and foster care system (given that it's chibnall's personal experience). And to make the doctor after 13 of all people have these conversations in his era is sickening.

and don't forget that she wanted to bring her fam back as well as asked all of them if they truly wanted to stay after their interest in it:

DOCTOR: Right, quick update. I made a terrible mistake. We shouldn't be here. I'm going to fix it and get you guys home, I promise. Soon as I figure out where we are.

DOCTOR: I'm sorry. I've failed you. I promised you and I let you down.

DOCTOR: I can't guarantee that you're going to be safe.

YASMIN: We know.

DOCTOR: Do you? Really? Cos when I pull that lever, I'm never quite sure what's going to happen.

RYAN: That's okay.

DOCTOR: You're not going to come back as the same people that left here.

GRAHAM: But that's all right. I think that's good.

DOCTOR: Be sure. All of you, be sure.

YASMIN: Sure.

GRAHAM: Sure.
