I'm sorry but if two people interact with the same piece of media and one of them ends up a raging racist or sex predator or something, and one of them is totally fine, then the problem isn't the media. The problem is the person.

This is true in the strict sense, that there is no simple deterministic relation between the two (and I've written on that here before), but to say 'the problem is the person' is an incorrect view on the matter.

The difference between the person who consumes e.g. racist propaganda regularly and ends up internalising some of its ideas and assumptions, and the person who does the same and ends up only more commitedly opposed to racism is, generally, their political consciousness and theoretical grounding to recognise, isolate, and engage with those ideas. While this places the apparent definitive factor within the person, this is lacking an analysis of context.

A person may be exposed to the measles virus and become seriously ill, or be unharmed, depending on whether they have been immunised against it. Exposure to the virus may even strengthen their defenses if carried out as a process of inoculation. Here, it would not make sense to say that 'measles is harmless, the problem is the person' - the harming or helping of the person is generated, here, by the relationship between the person and the virus, not just the person itself.

While developing political consciousness and theoretical literacy can help to produce more beneficial interactions, analyses, and responses to communicative works, it is equally true that suppression of harmful propaganda, when possible and practicable, works just as well to that end, for 'politically immunocompromised' cases.
