Sff! Celebrates Week of the Young Child
Last week was “Week of the Young Child,” a special week started by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to celebrate early learning, young children, their teachers, and families.
Sff! wanted to celebrate our children in a different way this year, so we invited Joy the Clown to give our twos, threes, and fours classes a show. Along with bunnies and doves, Joy taught the children about the Golden rule: Respect others as you would like to be respected and treated by others. Respect your parents, respect your teachers, and respect the elderly. We are so grateful for the joy and happiness she brought to our children. Thank you Joy, the show was fantastic!
Sff! is honored to have an in-house, talented Zumba instructor on staff. Ms. Monica Andrade, who does Zumba as a hobby, was happy to offer Zumba classes for our children. They had so much fun with her! We would like to give Ms. Monica a BIG, BIG thank you for doing this with our children. Being active with the children helps them learn more about being healthy and makes learning easier.
Here are some other fun activities we did to celebrate the Week of the Young Child:
Sff! Wake Forest enjoyed the Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dance event, and had a fun competition for our 2 year olds. Our children also enjoyed a performance from our Director, who sang while one of our lovely moms played the piano. It was great to have live music! Special thanks to Mrs. Sandra Potter and Mrs. Lucelia Rodriguez for finding unique ways to make our children feel special.
Sff! Cary teachers prepared a beautiful party for their children where they danced and ate ice cream. Our little ones had a bubble party and puppet show prepared by the teachers. Thanks to our Cary Team for planning such a fun party for our children. We also invited to Ms. Valeria Ronceros, who came and played some music. Thanks Valeria for the great performances!
In Sff! Duraleigh, our babies enjoyed story time and a puppet show at the playground. They also played with the hula-hula and bubbles. Additionally, we had a special guest that came with a ukulele to play live music for our children and teachers. They danced, touched the instrument, and enjoyed this great moment! We would like to thank Ms. Valeria Ronceros for sharing her talent with our little ones in Duraleigh.
Sff! Raleigh enjoyed a delicious picnic and had story time at the playground. Each teacher celebrated our children with different activities per classroom. Thank you very much to our wonderful Raleigh staff for making everyone feel special.
We love special celebrations at Spanish for fun! Our teachers, parents and children had a great week-long celebration!

Sff! Staff Benefits from Training Workshop with Noted Education Leader
Last month our teachers and administrators went through a workshop with Enrique Feldman to learn skills and ideas for engaging our students on a deeper level. At Spanish for fun! we are always looking to increase the knowledge and abilities of our highly qualified personnel and this workshop did just that.
Enrique is the Founder and Director of Education for Global Learning Foundation (GLF), a play-based and research-based organization that offers professional development for schools and organizations of all types. He has taken everything he’s learned over the years — from music and composition to improv and play — and channeled it into a literacy learning approach that values engagement, connection, energy and community. He promotes trusting your instincts and knowing when to take risks, authentic learning and frameworks, and building what he calls “Possibility Culture.”
Our goal at Sff! was to help teachers come up with creative ways to play with students. They learned about using games to achieve brain lateralization, how to break from routine and generate creative ideas in the classroom, and how to ask more open-ended questions. We believe there is always something more to learn and know that breaking from the day-to-day routine will help spark creativity. Being reminded of these things, as small as they may seem, can have a great impact on our daily approach to teaching.
Here’s what some of our teachers had to say about their experience:
“Today I used Enrique’s bilateral technique and my children were very happy while lining up to wash their hands. I loved it!” — Mrs. Maite, Sff! Wake Forest.
“Enrique is a very creative person, I really liked his workshop. I used the techniques he taught us with my students by asking them to close their eyes and imagine they were in the story I was reading. They asked me for more. I will continue putting his techniques into practice.” — Mrs. Emely, Sff! Wake Forest.
“Enrique taught us new things to practice with the children and also knowledge that we know, but for some reason forget to put it into practice every day. In particular, to choose to be happy always!” Mrs. Claudia, Sff! Duraleigh.
“These workshops for me are vitamins for my soul.” — Mrs. Mayela, Sff! Cary.
“It was a great honor to work with Enrique and NCAEYC. Our team got a lot out of it. We are already in talks to attend a large NCAEYC event with our entire team.” — Gabi Lowry, Sff! founder.
It was so exciting to work with a renowned company like NCAEYC and benefit from the experienced training they offer. One thing we stress to our staff is always remember that our brains and hearts can learn something new until the last day of our lives. This workshop underscored the message.
If you are searching for a preschool that will offer your child a safe, loving environment and an educational jumpstart, Spanish for fun! is your best option. Get in touch with us today to schedule a tour of our Glenwood campus. Call 919-881-1160 or complete the form on our website. We look forward to showing you why your child will thrive with us.

Parent or Friend — What’s The Best Way For You Relate To Your Child?
There isn’t much to consider when it comes to the type of relationship you have with your child before they reach preschool age. Their speech is limited at this stage, their reasoning is suspect and their life experience is extremely narrow. You are the parent — the authority figure — and there’s little to discuss about it. As the days go by, however, children seem to quickly get to the point where they can process what you tell them. They begin draw their own conclusions about the validity of your comments and commands. This can lead to them arguing with you or even being defiant.
When this occurs, you face the challenge of deciding how to handle your child in the best way possible. Should you react as an authoritative parent and refuse to be defied? Or, do you negotiate with your child in a way they will understand to reach a compromise? What’s the priority: to be a parent or a friend? Many of us are quick to say the former, but we often act like the latter. The following post discusses the issue in clear terms:
Be Your Child’s Parent, Not A Best Friend
IT is a misconception that a parent can be a child’s best friend. Friends are a group of people that generally have the same ideas and notions about life and are considered equals. Children and adults almost always have different ideas about what they should be doing, and are certainly not equals. Children will have many sets of friends throughout their lives, but they will have only one set of parents. Read more at Jamaica Observer…
Okay, you can’t abdicate your responsibility as a parent. But can’t you maintain that role while also being a friend? The following post looks at this from both sides:
Can you be a parent AND friend to your children? Experts give their opinions
Fathers who try to be their sons’ best friends are being blamed for boys failing and falling behind girls at school.
Educational expert Barnaby Lenon says dads should instead supply the discipline boys need.
It has long been said that parents of both sexes need to provide rules and structure to their children instead of trying to please them. Two parents argue whether friendship is possible.
No, says Amanda Killelea
Part of me would love to be the “cool mum”, the mum who all my daughters’ friends think is great. Read more at Mirror…
Finding a healthy balance of the parent/friend relationship with your child is possible and can be extremely beneficial for you both. It requires being able to recognize when you need to adjust your parenting style and then being flexible enough to do it.
Forging a strong but accommodating relationship with your child means using different tactics at different times and stages of their life. The following post tells the story of a parent who is learning how to go about this very thing:
Why You Need to be a Parent and a Friend to your child
“You are being SO UNFAIR!”
“The answer is NO! I’m your parent, not your friend. End of story.” Her face was pinched into a scowl and she began digging through her purse for her car keys. Meanwhile, her teenage son waited on the opposite side of the car, continually brushing back his shaggy hair that kept falling into his eyes. His acne riddled face was contorted in anger and as soon as his mother unlocked the car door he forcibly flung his backpack in the car. His mother’s angry retort to such behavior was muffled by the car doors slamming. I unlocked my own car that was parked next to theirs in the school parking lot and felt a pang of sadness wash over me. ‘Oh Mama, I hope you change your mind,’ I thought to myself. Read more at Today…
Remember, you are your child’s parent by virtue of birthright, but how you handle the rest is entirely up to you. The key thing is to raise your youngster in a loving home that makes them feel secure and supported. Outside of the house, you can fortify these feelings by being selective about your child’s caretakers and educators.
If you are searching for a preschool that will offer your child a safe, loving environment and an educational jumpstart, Spanish for fun! is your best option. Get in touch with us today to schedule a tour of our Glenwood Campus. We would be delighted to show you our facility and our time-proven teaching methods. Call 919-881-1160 or complete the form on our website. We look forward to speaking with you soon.

Spoiling Our Team with a Trip to Asheville
At Spanish for fun!, we truly care about each and every one of our employees and want to make sure they are not only successful but happy. That’s why we make it a point to take them on retreats. Our work trips allow the team to bond, re-energize, and spark creativity.
A couple of months ago, we took our admin-directors to Asheville to do just that! We worked a little, we played a little, we explored, and we bonded as a team. We love to spoil our team!
The adventure started with a lunch on Friday afternoon.
After lunch we had a working session and then Rob cooked the team a delicious dinner!
On Saturday, we worked on overcoming fears by ziplining through the mountains! From one mountain to many others, we spent 3+ hours in the trees.
We had so much fun exploring the beautiful city of Asheville.
On Saturday night, we had fun as a team figuring out the breakout room!
On Sunday morning, we worked, went for a hike, and reached the sky!
Before we headed back to Raleigh, Rob treated us on his food truck, Out of the Blue Peruvian Fusion Cuisine.
We had so much fun with the team and love our unique trips! Here are some words from our admin-directors.
Karina
“This adventure allowed us to share with the founders and mentors we work with. We came to know each other in a different way, having a lot of fun in the beautiful city of Ashville with the colorful trees around us.
I would name this trip as freedom, happiness, and challenge!
The whole trip was spectacular! I loved being spoiled by Rob with delicious breakfasts, being welcomed in their home, and sharing with Gabi the zipline, tour of Asheville, food, music, flavors and fun together as the family we are!”
From Monica
“My trip to Asheville was a great experience, I really enjoyed our bonding time. I felt part of the team, a great, strong and fun team 🙂
I enjoyed the delicious food, and overall the experience of being with our admin staff in a non-working environment, getting to know each one of them better.
Great company, great hosts, great time. Thanks Rob, Gabi and team.”
From Lucelia
“Our trip to Asheville was super fun and inspirational. We had a great time together getting to know each other better, and spending time together in a place that has outstanding nature and landscaping.
My favorite part of the trip was definitely the ziplining. I was super afraid of doing it and my adrenaline was super high, but once I had the courage to go, and fly between the mountains, watching those spectacular autumn views, it felt amazing.
We came back with a renewed energy, feeling stronger and happier. Can’t wait for our next one.”
From Veronica
“My favorite part of the trip was the time I spent with my coworkers while we were on our way to Ashville and the time during our activity. I loved our Zipline activity and seeing the team that we have so united, and how we encouraged each other to do each one of the ziplines. Some of us overcame the fear of heights or for some, it was our first time. Thanks to Ms. Gabi and Rob for opening the doors of their home and for the delicious dinner and breakfast they gave us.
It was a great experience.”
From Valeria
“I loved being in contact with nature, the extreme activities, beautiful landscape, and reinforcing team bonds as well as team skills.”
From Ingrid
“I loved sharing experiences with my peers, and growing stronger relationships with them. It was definitely a unique weekend! I enjoyed Rob and Gabi’s warm hospitality and most of all I loved to get to know their loved Asheville.
It was cathartic for me to overcome my fear of heights. I was able to truly enjoy the zipline!!! Going up to the mountains, the incredible views, and daring myself each time I was on the zipline was a great experience!!
During the trip, new ideas came to me, and I came back refreshed, and with a strong feeling to make positive changes in my school. This is an experience that I hope happens again!!”

Here’s What Story Time Does For Your Child’s Social And Language Skills
Introducing your child to books at a young age is very important as it will set the stage for him or her to learn about the world around them. They can travel to any part of the world and find themselves in every sort of adventure when they learn to engage with books. Before your little one can read on their own, you should be reading to them. This is a great way to bond and promote their development in some key ways.
For starters, story time is excellent for enhancing your child’s language skills. As they listen to you read, they get to hear new words and how sentences are constructed. The following post offers more detail:
The Importance of Story Time
Reading to your baby aloud can do wonders for her developing language skills. It’s one of the best ways to help her learn.
The more words she hears in a day, the better. If you haven’t started already, make a habit of reading to your baby every day.
Good reading habits that start early will set the stage for her to learn new things down the road.
This a good time to:
Invest in hardboard and bath books. They’ll likely end up in your baby’s mouth, but that’s a good sign that she’s taken an interest.
Choose books with a lot of color and simple objects decorating the pages.
Read books with photographs of faces and animals (especially those that show emotion) to capture your baby’s attention. Read more at Web MD…
If you read to your child, not only will their language skills develop, they will also gain educational advantages over their peers as they grow older.
In addition to the cognitive benefits, reading to your child allows you to bond with them in a special way. Check out this post for more:
Not only does reading to your children help to improve their academic performance, but more importantly it strengthens your bond, improves their imagination, helps children learn to read, teaches them about the world around them, and provides important morals to help make your child a nicer person.
Experts recommend that children should spend at least 20 minutes per day reading and it’s recommended that even when children learn to read, parents still spend the time to read with their children.
We understand that some parents may be nervous about reading to their children due to a lack of confidence or their own literacy skills, but reading with your child doesn’t need to be difficult, or a chore. Read more at Nanny Job…
If you make story time fun and interesting, both you and your child will look forward to it. It may well end up being the highlight of the day, with each of you getting the chance to share your thoughts and emotions about the stories you read.
In addition to reading to your child at home, you can also introduce them to a structured story time at your local library. Along with the other advantages, this will help develop their social skills, like behaving approriately in a group. They can also learn critical safety information while participating, as the following post explains:
Children Learn Importance of Fire Safety at Story Time
Children were learning about fire safety and having fun all at the same time at the Rapid City Public Library on Tuesday for story time.
Lisa Saunders with the Rapid City Fire Department, Fire and Life Safety Division was interacting with the young kids by singing songs, reading books and playing games all relating to fire safety.
Saunders says they have been doing the program for school children for quite some time, but wanted to reach a younger crowd as well. Read more at Black Hills Fox…

The Numerous Benefits of Early Childhood Education
The moment your child is born, he or she starts learning and developing cognitively, physically, socially, emotionally, and linguistically. As your child grows, their brain acts like a sponge for knowledge — learning from you and from their environment.
While all children will learn and develop quickly during these formative years, there are a lot of benefits to attending a preschool that specializes in early childhood education. Here are just some of the advantages your child will receive from the right preschool.
Social Skills
Being around other children in a safe and educational environment helps children develop social skills. Preschool allows them to engage both with other children and with adults, which is crucial to the development of social skills like listening, expressing ideas, sharing, making friends and being accountable for actions.
Autonomy
Allowing your little one to learn, discover and explore outside of your home and care, helps them develop autonomy. Learning how to be independent at an early age will help them later in life when independence is crucial. Allowing your child to explore on their own helps them develop a sense of self, and understand how their choices and actions affect outcomes.
Language Acquisition
Kids don’t come out of the womb speaking your language. They learn from you and from their environment. Preschool helps nurture language development and communication skills as they learn from and practice with teachers and classmates.
In addition to learning English, the preschool years are the perfect time for children to acquire a second language. Enrolling your child in a language immersion preschool (like Spanish for fun!) will help them on the road to bilingualism. And as you probably know, there are many benefits to being bilingual.
Some of these benefits include:
Enhanced cognitive ability
Faster learning
Empathy and appreciation of other cultures
Better multitasking abilities
Increased attention span
Better memory
Increased concentration
Attention Span
A quality preschool has lots of activities that help develop your child’s attention span. Children learn concentration, they develop their listening skills and they learn how to follow directions, all through discovery and fun.
Exposure to Diversity
We live in a world rich with diversity. The earlier you expose your child to diverse cultures, thoughts and traditions, the better. Children who learn about diversity at an early age grow up to be more empathetic and understanding of others. They also learn to appreciate and understand that everyone is unique and different.
Better Performance in Grade School
Finally, early education (especially bilingual education) has been proven to help increase performance in grade school. This is because a quality preschool builds the right foundation for learning with regard to your child’s physical, mental, emotional and social development — all things that prepare them for a lifetime.
As a parent, you will be happy to know that you don’t have take our word for it when it comes to the validity of our claims. We have the feedback of a wide array of parents who have sent their children to Spanish for fun!, as well as the support of educators who see our results first-hand in their classrooms.
Here are two examples of the personal comments, phone calls, emails and letters we receive regularly about our school and teaching methods:
From a Happy Parent:
“We feel so fortunate a friend told us about Spanish for fun!. Not only do I feel my children are learning in a safe, diverse, unique environment, but also that they are absolutely adored by the staff. Picking up the children after a long day and still seeing the staff with big smiles and hugs for the everyone is wonderful. I love hearing my children’s language skills progress in both English and Spanish; and the weekly teaching plans seem fun and engaging. We feel lucky to be a part of the Spanish for fun! family!” — Blair
From a Kindergarten Teacher at Wake County Public School:
“Sff! kids are very well prepared to go to any public or private school. The teachers there do a wonderful job instructing them with the basic skills on how to start dealing with their daily lives and growing environment. They come to school with a great vocabulary, with a great ability to follow a conversation in Spanish, and knowing the letters of the alphabet. They get so excited when they hear the songs they already learned in Sff. They also come to school knowing a lot of games from Hispanic cultures. I believe Sff! is an amazing daycare because teachers there prepare students to be well-balanced individuals, capable of dealing with life’s challenges. It is a daycare that not only teaches Spanish; it goes beyond. They teach children to be open minded to a world of different cultures.” — Monica

Why Playtime Is Great For Your Child’s Development
Most children enjoy play more than any other activity. Among numerous benefits, it gives your child the opportunity to interact with others, explore their environment, problem solve, and it’s a powerful mood elevator. Play also enhances a child’s imagination as he or she acts out different roles and scenarios.
In today’s electronics driven world, it’s become increasingly normal to find children playing indoors. However, it’s important that they get outdoors for play, as well. The following post has more on the subject:
5 Benefits of Outdoor Play Activities for Kids
It is hardly uncommon for kids today to spend a large part of their childhood within the confines of their homes, playing indoor games on some device or the other. It is at this point in time that the merits of outdoor play activities must be emphasized. The benefits of children playing outdoors are many, and one can never stress their importance enough.
Here are 5 benefits of outdoor play activities for children.
1. Promotes physical health: Playing outdoors allows children to benefit from the goodness of fresh air and sunlight. This helps boost their immunity against many diseases and keeps them healthy and strong. Read more at Goel Ganga Developments…
As your child plays outside, they develop their social skills and sense of self confidence. Learning and creative skills are also enhanced through outdoor activities.
Because children enjoy play so much, it is easy to use it as the basis for cognitive and emotional development through structured play. During structured play, a fun game is turned into an opportunity for learning. The following post explains what structured play is all about:
What is Structured Play?
Structured play, or “play with a purpose,” is any activity that offers your preschooler a specific learning objective. It could be learning a certain life skill like teaching the months of the year or working on important physical abilities such as gross and fine motor skills.
Structured play activities and games are generally instructor-led. A parent, teacher or other trusted adult (even an older sibling) sets the tone for the play. The adult then helps the preschooler to either meet their goals or reviews the learning objective. Read more at Very Well…
Education experts recommend that young children get at least thirty minutes to an hour of structured play every day. The rest of their playtime can be unstructured, which offers its own benefits. See the post below for more details.
“Free” Play – Is It Really Beneficial?
The importance of play to a child’s development is known to all. The more you let your child play, the more they will explore and learn. Have you ever heard of the term “free play”? If you are not aware of the term, read the write-up and get to know about the concept in-depth.
These days, parents feel they have no choice but to pack their little one’s schedules with adult driven activities like organized sports. Do you consider it as the right way to progress? As per a recent study and research, free and unstructured play is important for a child’s physical, social and emotional development. Read more at Replay India…
It’s a great idea to encourage free playtime for your children. They can exercise their brains and bodies, and get rid of any excess energy.
At Spanish for fun! Glenwood, our goal is developing your child cognitively and socially through play. We are excited to have your child join us and benefit from our programs. Get in touch with us today to schedule a tour of our campus. We would be delighted to show you our facility and our time-proven teaching methods. Here’s Why You Should Prioritize Play For Your Preschooler
Children perceive the world differently and in a most amazing way. For instance, you probably consider play a simple recreational activity for fun. For your child, however, play is critical because it’s the key to learning. Through experiential play children discover, understand, conquer or learn to adapt to the challenges of daily living. The results are significant, continuous gains in your child’s cognitive, social and physical development.
To learn more about play for children and the immense ways it contributes to their well-being, read the following post:
Learning through play
Play is filled with opportunities for children to learn and is critical for their brain development in early childhood
The first five years of life have a significant effect on a child’s future. This is because children’s brains grow faster in early childhood than at any other time. When nurtured in safe and stimulating environments — in which playing has a central role — children develop the cognitive, emotional and behavioural skills needed to embrace opportunity and bounce back from adversity. Read more at Medium…
It’s amazing how something as simple as play can have a significant impact on a child’s life skills. What’s equally fascinating is the fact that this is a universal truth that applies to children all over the world.
So how does it actually happen? What is it about play that makes it so impactful? The following post explains:
Learning through play
Play is one of the main ways in which children learn. It helps to build self worth by giving a child a sense of his or her own abilities and to feel good about themselves. Because it’s fun, children often become very absorbed in what they are doing. In turn, this helps them develop the ability to concentrate. Providing children with a range of playthings will help them learn in a number of ways:
Sand and water play can be an early introduction to science and maths, eg learning that water is fluid, not solid, and that it can be measured in different sized containers.
Playing with dough, drawing and painting pictures, dressing up, playing with dolls can encourage creativity, imagination and expression of feelings.
Building blocks, jigsaws and shape sorters can help with recognizing different shapes and sizes, putting things in order and developing logic. Read more at Family Lives…
Different types of play will impact your child in unique ways. For this reason, it’s beneficial to vary your child’s activities for a holistic experience.
As you now understand, play should be treated as an essential input for your child — along the lines of proper nutrition and adequate sleep. If you need any more convincing (but really why would you?), the following post should seal the deal:
7 Amazing Ways Learning Through Play Benefits your Child
Why is learning through play a concept most discussed in early childhood education? What is play-based learning? Before we discuss the benefits of learning through play, we look at some research on play-based learning. Researchers have focused on the benefits of play for children ages two and a half through seven…
#1: Play Encourages Imagination
Play can incorporate make-believe activities which foster imagination. To adults, imagination seems as if it may only be a way to entertain children. On the contrary, imagination may be the answer to finding the cure for cancer or ending world hunger. Read more at Toddler Town Chicago…
As you prepare for your child’s early education, you need to explicitly search for a preschool that understands the importance of play-based learning. What Do You Know About Your Preschooler’s Friendships?
Humans are social creatures by nature. We crave interaction and connection with others before we even have the ability to vocalize the desire. A crucial life objective is acquiring the social skills needed to establish and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships. As a parent, you play a key role in shaping how your preschooler will learn to interact with others. It’s important that you prepare yourself to help guide this development, which will have lifelong implications for your child.
To begin, you should understand what early childhood friendships are all about. Learn how children naturally interact with one another, and know what to expect as the years progress. The following post provides good beginnng information:
Understanding toddler and preschooler friendships
“Who are my daughter’s/son’s closest friends?” is one of the most frequently asked questions our child care staff get from parents.
The answer to this question can change from day to day depending on the age of your child.
Children from 1 to 2 years old typically engage in parallel play — where they sit beside one another, but play alone with very little interaction. However, they are still picking up play behaviours and vocabulary by sitting side by side.
Once children move into the preschool years, though, they start to notice one another and are more likely to move out of their own little zone to interact with their peers. From 2 to 5 years old, children are learning how to share, listen to others, and co-operate with one another, forming deeper attachments to others and using their words to describe emotions and manage conflict. Be aware and make note of the changes in the way your child relates to his or her peers over time. This will give you added insight into your child’s personality, strengths and weaknesses as they grow.
We’ve established that your child wants friends and will seek them out, but will these early friendships have lasting importance to your child’s life, since he or she is so young? The following post explores these questions:
Friends Matter: The Importance of Friendships to Your Preschooler
During your child’s first few years, he has been aware of and interested in his peers, but he hasn’t quite been ready to play together with those kids and form true friendships. You may have seen him make his first friends at around 2.5 years old, but most children start making friends between the ages of three and four. These friendships are very important to your child and help with his social and emotional development. They teach him how to interact with and relate to others and show him that other people have different interests and opinions than his own. Read more at Playful Bee…
So you see, your preschooler’s friendships play an important role in helping them achieve key developmental milestones. You need to encourage this process for their long-term benefit.
One of the best ways you can do this is by helping your child gain good social skills, which will in turn help them create and sustain good friendships. Here are some valuable tips to assist you with this process:
Helping Your Preschooler Develop Friendship Skills
Are you puzzled by some of your child’s social behaviors? Have you noticed that your toddler doesn’t interact with other children very often? Does your three-year-old get frustrated when a classmate won’t play with him? Will your four-year-old only play with her best friend?
These are all normal social behaviors for preschoolers. Learning how to develop friendships is a lifelong process. Children’s social behaviors evolve from smiling and cooing at others, to engaging in parallel play, to eventually forming friendships and playing together.
Below are ways we help develop friendships in the classroom, as well as ideas for you and your child to do at home. Read more at Discovery Isle Preschool…
Another excellent way to enhance your child’s social skills is enrolling him or her in a preschool that prioritizes socialization, personal skills-building and guided play. If you reside in the Raleigh, NC metro area, Spanish for fun! is just what you’re looking for.

How Long Is Your Preschooler’s Attention Span?
As a parent, there are many discoveries you will make as your child grows. No two children develop in exactly the same way so it will be a unique journey — but don’t worry, there are still some common issues that all parents face.
One thing you will have to deal with is the attention span of your child. This post will help by answering such questions as how do you gauge your child’s ability to carry out different activities, and is it better to measure your child’s attention span based on age or developmental stage.
To start off, let’s look at what parents can generally expect when it comes to the attention spans of preschoolers and toddlers:
Toddler Attention Span…What’s Normal?
All toddlers have notoriously short attention spans.
For those of us who work with toddlers with developmental delays, it feels even shorter! Shorter as in, one to two milliseconds, before a little friend decides he needs to move on to something new.
It leaves us wondering… what’s normal for a toddler’s attention span?
Several years ago, I found a study (Gaertner 2008) that said the normal range for a toddler’s attention span is 3 to 6 minutes. Any longer than that and a child requires full adult support to stay with a task. Read more at Teach me to Talk…
According to the experts, it is more realistic to gauge the attention spans of toddlers based on their developmental age rather than chronological age. This is because each child has a unique development path.
There are certain practical steps that can be taken to help a child’s attention span improve gradually over a period of time. The following post discusses these strategies:
In this post I am going to give you some ideas of how to develop attention and listening skills in a pre-school child. By this, I mean children up to about 4 1/2, though of course some children in this country start school when they are only just 4! At this age I would not expect them to have fully developed skills in this area yet. However, at around this age children are usually able to focus for a while on one thing, and switch their focus from one thing to another and back again without too much support.
If your child is struggling with attention and listening in the early years, here are some strategies to try:-
Start where the child is at. If your child (or the child you are working with) is only able to attend to an activity for a few seconds, don’t expect them to go straight from there to listening for 5 minutes. Read more at Speech Blog UK…
As you see, you can help improve your child’s attention span. Just remember to start with realistic expections and work with activities your child will enjoy.
A major factor that influences attention span is sleep. While this is so for individuals of every age, adequate sleep is particularly important for children. The following post discusses in detail the value of sleep in relation to children’s attention span:
Afternoon slump? Naps can improve a preschooler’s attention span
Naps improve the attention of preschool children which could lead to more success in their learning, found a study in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology this month. The nap versus no nap battle has played out in sleep research over the years, with some suggesting that nighttime sleep is more consolidated and important, and other research leaving it based on total number of hours children clock in based on their age in a day.
What new information does this article give us? Should our preschool aged kids nap especially as they start to age up towards Kindergarten? The good news is that science keeps evolving and giving us new information to consider as parents. Of course, sometimes that information is confusing. This new research gives us more to consider as parents of young kids. Read more at The Inquirer…
Increasing your child’s attention span for better learning and development is vital. It’s important to enroll your child in a preschool that supports your efforts at home and has the expertise to deal with your child where they are while helping them advance.
Spanish for fun! is an accredited preschool that is committed to offering quality and holistic education. Our play-based teaching method and educational philosophy are successful and clear:
At Spanish for fun! we utilize a combination of Spanish immersion curriculum, international curriculum and the early education creative curriculum of North Carolina. This has been developed around a play-based philosophy as well as paying close attention to each child’s social emotional state by exposing them to all 5 love languages (based off of the research done by Dr. Gary Chapman). A play based philosophy means we believe that children naturally engage in and enjoy play as a way of learning on their own terms and at their own pace.
Call us at 919-881-1160 or complete the contact form on our website to schedule a tour of our Raleigh Campus to learn more about what we do. We look forward to meeting you.

The Sff! Family Learns to Unleash Their Power
Here at Spanish for fun! it’s important to us that we offer our teachers and administrators opportunities to develop their careers. Over the summer we sent a group of Sff! directors to New York for Tony Robbins’ outstanding Unleash the Power Within event.
Unleash the Power Within is a live 3 ½ day seminar led by Tony Robbins himself that is designed to “help you unlock and unleash the forces inside that can help you break through any limit and create the quality of life you desire.”
Here’s what our administrators took away from the experience:
Karina Martínez: Regional Manager
“Unleash the Power” was a unique experience. When I first heard about it, I didn’t know what to expect but was very excited. The opportunity to create experiences with my team made me feel confident that this was going to be a great experience in my professional and personal life.
Tony Robbins has triggered my motivation and desire to achieve my dreams with no limits. It’s important that we work within ourselves first in order to improve our leadership. Only then will we be able to impact others.
I received a lot of great tools that I’m already using. Most of them are very simple and related to the energy level needed to create change. Breathing exercises, drinking water, and training your brain are some examples.
Professionally, I want to keep growing to make big things happen. I am thankful and appreciated by Sff!, because they have given me beautiful opportunities, and I know they care about their employees. I want to say YES, YES, YES! to Sff! dreams and goals. We are doing it!
Elizabeth Peñalva: Program Coordinator
This event was a unique personal and professional experience. I learned to analyze myself to understand my fears, recognize my achievements, and be grateful for everything I have. I learned more about myself and learned to value myself more.
This is the starting point for making strong and consistent decisions. It’s my push to be a leader and motivate our teachers to be committed, creative, and determined leaders in their own right without fear of change.
As a team, we want Sff! to grow. We have many dreams and today we are working for these dreams to come true. Let’s do it! Let’s say yes!
“For changes to be of any true value, they’ve got to be lasting and consistent.” — Tony Robbins.
Cynthia De Amat: Cary Director
The Tony Robbins seminars have been such a great experience, personally and professionally. During those 4 days, I learned that I am the only one responsible for my success in life. I learned that my vision and energy is very important. My words are important. And that these things will determine if I succeed or fail at any task I go for.
I enjoyed spending time with my co-workers. I feel we were able to learn more about each other, and to build a great relationship as a team. I feel empowered to know that together we are able to accomplish any goal we desire.
I see my job as a daily opportunity to accomplish little goals, help others take away their limiting beliefs, and empower people to fulfill their dreams and reach their goals. I am here to motivate others. I thank Sff! for the opportunity.
Valeria Hernández: Glenwood Director
At the start of each day there were crew members who lined up throughout the center leading up to the hall waiting to give you high fives and get the energy up. I was shy at first but I learned that energy is vital to the “Unleash the Power Within” experience.
The first thing Tony covered is that we have conditioned the negativity within ourselves. It’s not really us. When we say “I am depressed” or “I can’t do that because I’m too young” it is just a pattern of behavior that we have conditioned ourselves to believe.
Fear is the first thing that stops us. It comes down to feeling like we are not enough or like we won’t be loved. After 11 hours of building us up and learning to “make our move” and shout “yes,” we ended the night with the Firewalk Experience, walking across a bed of burning hot coals. The Firewalk is a metaphor for overcoming fear in your life, which is the only thing that stops us.
It was such a great experience that helped me personally and professionally. I learned to show my team the importance of changing our mood or state into positive energy and to have better communication with my family and staff.
All in all, our directors had a great time in New York City. They learned to “unleash their power” and they connected as a team.

How To Care For Your Child’s Psychological Well-Being
As a parent, there is so much to think about when it comes to your children’s welfare. Before they start school, you are largely preoccupied with their diet and health. Just making sure they are healthy and strong is a full-time preoccupation. When they start preschool, the game changes.
This transition introduces your child to a whole new environment. This is why it also becomes very important for you to pay attention to your child’s psychological health. Perhaps the best way to get started is to get an overview of what child psychology is about and what it means for your child. The following post discusses this in detail:
5 Important Things Child Psychology Teaches Us About Children
The study of the psychological processes of children – and specifically, how these processes differ from those of adults, how they develop from birth to the end of adolescence, and how and why they differ from one child to the next- is a specialised branch of psychology, known as child psychology. Child psychologists work with children and adolescents to diagnose and help resolve issues causing emotional or behavioural problems, such as learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, anxiety, and depression. They also evaluate children for developmental delays, signs of autism spectrum disorder and other problems that affect development. Read more at SACAP…
You need to understand, however, that child psychology isn’t just for the identification and management of problems. Child psychology helps you know and interpret your child’s inner life.
Certain aspects of your child psychology are very important, but very few know about them. One example is psychological rest. Just like you plan for your child’s sleeping time, it’s important that he gets psychological rest as well. The following post explains how this can be done:
What about psychological rest?
Psychological rest is much less talked about, but becoming more relevant each day as adults and children alike are inundated with the rapid advances that technology brings.
Enter social media and its incredibly addictive nature. We see both children and adults glued to their phones and screens. Many children in our society have their phones with them 24/7. Their brains and bodies are on high alert for the next text, ‘like’, or comment. This is simply not a place of rest for them, and they need this rest in order to help them emerge as separate beings, adapt to life’s challenges, and mature. On top of not getting the psychological rest they need, these kids are texting well into the night and compromising their sleep needs dramatically. Read more at Bayridge Counselling Centre…
As discussed above, training your children to get enough psychological rest is essential. That way, they will grow up into adults that are confident about themselves and their abilities.
It is also important to inform your children that they will experience challenges in life. This preparation, as well as learning how to handle them, are vital. The following post talks about the importance of counseling for your child:
Benefits of child counselling
A few examples of how counselling can help children include; coping with everyday worries, such as exam stress, and relationship issues with friends, family members and teachers. Counselling can also help with self-harm concerns, grief, depression and anxiety, and learning difficulties, to name a few.
Really, if something is making your child unhappy, however small you or they feel it is, it’s important. Know that help is available – counselling allows your child to talk to someone about what’s on their mind safely and confidently, without fear of judgement.
There is no right or wrong reason to why someone may consider counselling. Sometimes it’s just good to talk to someone objective, other times more guidance may be needed. Read more at Counselling Directory…
If you start early, you can develop a strong relationship with your child so that he can come to you for counsel. This would be ideal. However, other times, he may need to talk to someone else, and that is okay. The most important thing is that you have addressed your child’s psychological needs.
One way to protect your child’s welfare is to enroll him or her in a good preschool. At Spanish For Fun, we are particularly keen on providing a loving and fun preschool experience. We are an accredited Spanish-immersion preschool. Your child will enjoy the benefits of bilingualism and develop critical life skills that will ensure his or her psychological well-being is taken care of.
Our staff is trained to handle children with tender, loving care, with a special emphasis on the five love languages as outlined by Dr. Gary Chapman in his groundbreaking book on the subject.

How Important Are Routines In Child Development?
As a parent, you desire the best life for your little one. New parents are always willing to find out what they should do and what they should avoid. It is important to get this knowledge and then apply it to your own situation so that it works well for you and your child. An important fact to understand about children is their need for set routines and schedules for optimal development.
Getting a professional perspective on the subject of routines would be a good place to start and lay a proper foundation. The following post explains a teacher’s perspective on the importance of routines:
What Teachers Know About Routines and How They Benefit Children’s Development
Throughout the past two months, I have had the privilege of guest teaching in nearly two dozen classrooms at five different schools.
I enjoy interacting with the children, ranging in age from 3 to 12, and I constantly marvel at the amazing things they are learning and producing in class, led by their competent and well-prepared teachers.
Teachers are an on-the-ground, in-the-trenches battalion of action researchers on child development and learning. Teachers observe children, they interact and communicate for hours every day, and many teachers spend year after year embedded with children of the same age, discovering how to best motivate, teach and guide them in the process of learning and developing. Parents and scientists can greatly benefit from the collective wisdom acquired by these professionals. Read more at Huffington Post…
A routine will give your child a sense of security as he or she knows what to expect, at what time, and how the activity will be carried out. Routines do away with ambiguity, and that contributes positively to healthy development.
One aspect of your child’s development that you need to pay close attention to is the sleep routine. A regular sleep schedule set’s the body’s internal clock, as described in the following post:
Good sleep routine ensures children’s body clocks are set
Mr Seah Yam Meng’s claim that requiring children to wake up before sunrise disrupts their body clock is unfounded (Push back start time of schools for health’s sake; ST Online, Feb 24)
What children need is enough hours of good sleep each night.
According to many sleep experts, establishing a proper sleep routine helps to set your body’s “internal clock”, making it easier for you to sleep and wake naturally.
Parents should encourage their children to go to bed no later than 9pm. Waking up early means children have more time in the morning to clear their minds and eat a good breakfast. Read more at Straits Time…
As long as your child has enough hours of sleep, he can wake up as early as he wants. All you need to ensure is that he sleeps early if he needs to wake up early.
It is always helpful to hear another parent’s experience in setting a routine. The following post is an interesting and realistic story of the joys and difficulties of setting a schedule for a little girl:
Importance Of Having Routine For Children
Routines instill order, stability, and a sense of calm – which benefits all new parents. Before I became a mum, I was never good at sticking to routines. By nature, I liked to enjoy my free time unrestrained, without operating under a schedule.
But when Chloe was a few days’ old, after we came home from the hospital and could no longer rely on helpful nurses and doctors to assist with caring for her, I set out to live a life of routines. I was a mum, and I had to be responsible.
So I wrote down our sleeping routine, breastfeeding schedule, a regular day’s agenda, the exact number of times Chloe pooped and peed, etc.
Despite my best effort, within a couple weeks’ time most of the record keeping and routines stopped. Read more at The New Age Parents…
When it’s time to enroll your child for preschool, you need to inquire about the schedule and ensure that the program is holistic and tailor-made for your child’s cognitive development.

Assessing Your Child’s Friends – How To Handle A Sensitive Issue
There are many wise sayings related to friends, the company we keep, and the effect their presence and influence has on us. As a parent, you may be wondering how to manage the impact — both positive and negative — of your child’s friends, especially when he or she reaches school-going age and peers become a significant social force. It is important to know when to simply advise your child and when to take more action. The following post takes a closer look at these choices:
Parents: Should You Choose Your Child’s Friends?
Remember that moment when you held your baby for the first time. Along with suddenly turning into a parent, you were smacked with the responsibility of another human being. You chose between cloth and disposable diapers, between breastfeeding and formula, between steel and BPA free plastic…at every stage of that little person’s life – you made a choice.
Thinking about peer influence
This rang in my ears especially loudly when this past week my four year old said a bad word. I did a double take and asked him what he said. He just shrugged and repeated his sentence like it was nothing out of the ordinary. Hit with the word again, I asked him if he knew what he was saying was wrong and a bad word. He shrugged again and said A (his best friend at school) says it all the time. Read more at Kids Stop Press…
When you believe your child’s behavior is being negatively influenced by their friends, you need to address it immediately. As someone wisely observed: “What you do not correct you affirm.”
How can you tell if your child has a bad friend? Or if someone around them is a bad influence? How can you make the best judgment about your child’s friends? These are all important questions, which the following post examines:
What’s a parent to do if your child is hanging out with kids you don’t approve of, whose values and upbringing don’t match your own? You want to give him the freedom to choose his friends, without throwing his values, morals and convictions out of the window. It’s a tough dilemma that you’re bound to face, sooner or later.
Here are some tips for navigating the road ahead.
#1 Don’t judge a book by its cover
Get to know your child’s friend. Don’t base your judgment on first impressions. He might seem rowdy and violent, but that could be more a sign of a high energy personality and boredom than an innate desire to wreak havoc or cause bodily harm. She might talk a lot about boys, not because she’s into them (at the tender age of four) but because her teenage big sister is always talking about her latest crush. Conversely, kids who appear clean and innocent may be masking inner turmoil and deep-rooted issues. Read more at The New Age Parent…
One of the best ways to evaluate the character and quality of your child’s friends is to invite them to visit your home. Close interactions will help you assess the peers your son or daughter is hanging out with. You will then be in a better position to make informed decisions about the friendship.
To keep from focusing on the negative, you should acquaint yourself with what a good friend for your child will look like. Here is one mother’s helpful description:
What Makes a Good Friend — 10 Signs Your Child’s Friend is a Good Influence
After my daughter Chloe went through a particularly difficult friendship with a girl who turned out to be a bully, I’ve thought a lot about what makes a good friend for my children. I am so thankful for the friends who have been good influences in my children’s lives. I’m not just grateful for the friendship, I’m grateful for the examples they have set and the way they help my daughters to be their best selves.
I’ve found that the signs that your child has a good friend are often the exact opposite of the signs that a friend might be a bully or a person who ends up bringing your child down. Read more at Overstuffed Life…
Clearly, it is important for your child to be surrounded by the right influences from an early age. It is not hyperbole to state that enrollment in a great preschool can set your child on a path that leads to life-long success.
At Spanish for fun!, our innovative immersion program teaches children to speak Spanish and appreciate the culture. We strive to instill the values of empathy and multiculturism in our students. We provide them with a global understanding of life and promote holistic development of both their cognitive and social skills.
If you are in Raleigh and looking for a preschool that will offer your child the benefits discussed in this post, Spanish for fun! is your best option. We combine the loving care that your child needs with Spanish language education, cultural learning and lots of fun.

This is How Your Child Spells Love… T-I-M-E
Your presence in the daily life of your child is irreplaceable. Children understand that they are loved when they feel like they are important to you and they don’t have to compete for your attention. Setting aside time every day for direct interaction with your child is one of the best ways to make them feel loved, confident and boost their self-esteem.
The following post talks more about the time you spend with your children:
The Importance of Spending More Quality Time with Your Kids
Families are busy these days. After work, school, extra-curricular activities, meetings, housework and the other inevitable realities of life, there isn’t a lot of time leftover for quality time to spend with your children.
By spending quality time with your kids, they receive many benefits. Here are a few of them, why they are important, and how to make quality time.
Feeling Loved and Important – This is important for any person at any age. Feeling loved, valued and important builds self-esteem and self-worth, which is necessary for a fulfilling life. Read more at College Nannies and Tutors…
If you want your children to grow up and become the kind of people that will make you proud, then you need to invest your time in them and show them how to get there.
The truth is that there are many demands on your time and it might become difficult to spend a whole lot of time with your little ones. However, here are some creative ways to make it happen:
5 INCREDIBLE ways to spend quality time with your children even when you do not have time
Somedays fly by, so fast that we find ourselves wondering where the day went. Perhaps you didn’t get as much done as you wanted to. Perhaps you didn’t spend what you would consider quality time with your kids. Instead, you spent the day running from place to place, trying to do everything on your schedule. Life is like that sometimes, but there are still ways to spend quality time with your kids, even when you think you don’t have time. Here’s how.
Turn off the “noise”
If you spend a lot of time driving around, try turning off the radio and having real conversations with your kids. Read more at Family Share…
Maximizing on the little time you have will go a long way in enhancing communication between you and your children. Ensure that you make them feel that they matter to you.
One way of doing this is planning special activities. What you do doesn’t have to be a big deal or cost anything. For instance, set aside a special time to go for a walk together. You can use these simple suggestions to make your stroll even more meaningful:
8 Simple Ways to Improve Quality Time on a Walk with Your Kids
One of the easiest and most well-loved activities you can do with your kids is taking a walk! Here are eight simple ways to make the most of it and get the best quality time out of walking.
Turn it into a science lesson
Everything outside can be turned into a science lesson. Even if your child isn’t old enough to ask questions like “why is the sky blue?” you can point out things around your neighborhood or park and explain them. Your explanations can vary from basic science to more technical based on your child’s age. Even though Toot is only 14 months, I still like to explain more complex scientific ideas in hopes that she’ll turn out to be a genius. But I will always start with a basic idea.
