I've heard tale that Nathan's are by far the best dog a man can get for his hard earned hot dog money, but alas, it seems as though they have disappeared from every sorry excuse for a grocery store this side of lake Ontario. Anybody have any leads on those tasty nitrates?

But alas, Nathan's have eluded my grasp here at home. Oh sure, there have been rumours. unconfirmed sightings by friends that proved to be as elusive as a Yeti in the chilled meat section.  A neighbour once claimed that the restaurant he worked at served them and, as he was quitting, he would steal me a pack (an offer I declined to preserve the man's dignity... one wants an unsullied resignation and a bridge left unburned).So I have yet to purchase Nathan's in our fine city.

But. 

I have found something far better. May I humbly present you the Chicago 58 Lanky Franky. I have only ever found this nitrate loaded wonder at Metro stores, in particular the one in Liberty Village. I can assure you that the Chicago 58 name, after much research on my part, is authentic. These are tubular love letters to a marginally achieved American Dream. To Memorial Day cookouts in suburban backyards with scratchy lawns and half-filled swimming pools. To Poison's Unskinny Bop playing quietly on a Sanyo ghetto blaster in the background as mom, teetering from too much boxed wine, lights another menthol and nods her head sagely in time to the music.These are the best goddamn hot dogs to ever grace God's green earth.
