Do you have to be depressed to write a sad song? Do you have to be in love to write a love song? Is a song better when it really happened to you?
Almost Famous (2000) dir. Cameron Crowe

Everything about Rocketman is incredibly well thought, and Taron Egerton deserves 100% more than what he’s been given for this character - not because he played Elton John, but his acting is fantastic and leaves NOTHING to desire or wish for. You can see his feelings right there and then, on his face. In Tiny Dancer, you see the shell of a lonely boy realizing that miles away, in a whole different scenario, he’s still lonely, he’s still not a priority, and then you see him being surprised by John, how happy he he’s someone’s taken interested in him and made HIM a priority, made him the center of the attention. He doesn’t even know how to react - so he takes a sip of his drink.  Following through the movie, you can FEEL Elton’s struggles through Taron’s interpretation of him, the life he put into this character, into Elton himself. Once again, when John tells him he has to talk to his parents, you see life fades from Taron’s eyes, the sheer panic of having to deal with a touchy subject with his parents - that have pushed, blamed, dropped him all through his life. You can see the pain, the hurt, the loneliness, the rock bottom when his dad asks him to sign the record to someone else, when he realizes his own father didn’t even try to like his art. Taron continues to impress with his skills, paying close attention to every single scene, but the full kick comes when Reggie shows up at the end. He hasn’t been Reggie in decades, or ever, but he knows what that child’s going through and if only he had someone back then to hug him and reassure him like he can do for his younger version when he was at that age. He squads down, eye to eye, and despise not having love and stability at that age, he grew up and learned to be better than that. Taron hugs mini Elton.  When Bernie visits him, and he voices his fears, you can see the hurt when he’s about to play the piano again - the piano that gave Elton everything he had but also sinked him down to the lowest ever. Fear of going back to that. You can, once again, almost touch that fear. With I’m Still Standing, Taron faces changes completely and looks like a blank canvas. The fear of leaving rehab, of being at peace, ready to start fresh. And Elton DID and Taron showed that so incredibly well, singing live.  Fuck the academy, fuck every freaking award that doesn’t recognize the pure TALENT, the amount of effort put into looking effortless and Taron’s incredible hard work in this lifetime achievement of portraying one of our generations best musicians to date.

The lack of respect Rocketman is getting when Bohemian Rhapsody is beloved, is astounding.
I know they’re very VERY different in style and tone and such (one a biopic, the other a jukebox musical). It still deserves as much love and respect as BoRhap.
Queens influence on pop culture is definitely larger and more prominent than Elton John’s has been- but I wish the movie and especially Taron Egerton (HOME BOY SANG AND ACTED HIS HEART OUT BRILLIANTLY)was appreciated more.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk
