Tiles
shape: the shape of the tiles was inspired by the tiles which currently surround the stage. These were very important tiles as the frame all of the people, act, etc, that have and will perform in the theatre. materials: Charcoal, stone, rock, and shells, were all specifically chosen and collected from places around the site. These materials symbolise different aspects of the site, eg, the Waihorotiu stream, the fires which took place, and aspects of Saint James. layout: the positions of the tiles, the arch that has been created from collum to collum, is a reflection of the stage once again. I wanted repetition of an aspect of the theatre to be portrayed and when se.eing the grand stage in real life, I knew that this had to be used in some shape or form.

Final design
An experiential walk through the corridor which connects Queen street and Lorne street. The immersive walkway tells the history of the site which Saint James was built on and the theatres story. Open throughout the day, the public may use this space whenever they feel the need to, not only creating a short cut through the city for convenience, but also telling a story on the viewer's journey from point A to B. Heather Knight, inspired my main of the tiles and the contents of them, using her surroundings to inspire her handmade tiles. Keeping in mind Barnet Newman’s design thinking, that one's experience will be completely different from the next, I let space for people to have their own opinion. Tiles, which make up almost all of the visible material used, hold the story. The tiles express fires that took place, the Waihorotiu stream, and aspects of Saint James itself. Placing the tiles and chosen shapes, all intentional in creating this space. The tunnel-like space echoes sound throughout out it resembling being under the water in the Waihorotiu stream. By creating a space that incases parts of Saint James’s history the viewers will be educated through touch, sight, and feel, allowing them to almost be at the historic events. The long walkway contains seating for the public to sit and take in their surroundings, and also signs to inform them of what they are experiencing.

Lighting choice
Taking both color and shape aspects from the huge mural on the theatres ceiling, was able to make a light; shape from a component of the art and colours from the center of the mural.

Lighting options
wanting to portray Saint James in my light choice, I will apply what I have learned in digital to find a light of choice. By outlining shapes I find significant in the building I will then turn these into 3d objects and create a light shape. By doing this will be telling more of the history of the site. Colour and material will also be determined on the chosen shape and other important factors.

Saint James
After a fire in 2007 which closed the building entirely a 2015 fire effecting Saint James was the second fire in a decade to damage the historic Theatre. With little hope left after these events, developers slowed down and the public and council started to turn a blind eye. Because you are unable to change history, why not embrace it and use segments of the fire which were left behind to help rebuild and restore Saint James Theatre.

Waihorotiu stream
Waihorotiu was once an open stream that ran off the Waitemata river. Running underneath Queen street and more but is now encased by a brick cover nd layers of concrete. over one hundred years ago the stream started at the top of Myers park where the freshwater was used for baptism and many cultural activities. Further downstream was the swamp aka Aotearoa Square which was used for fishing and bathing. Very near the swamp there was a communal water source that quenched the thirst of many Maori tribes in the area. The stream made its way down the rest of queen street to the harbor once known as Horotiu bay.
Later on, due to population increase, the stream had bridges built over it and then was slowly covered due to the risk of buildings sinking into it.

Brainstorm
Tiles
Put aspects of history into my tiles
Create tiles which look like aspects of the history
retrieve actual materials from the site
Layout
Placing tiles in a way that tells a story
placing the tiles densely so that major immersion occurs
placing similar tiles next to one another and gradually transitioning into another
having no tiles shown on the exterior
having tiles spilling out of the interior on to the exterior

Define
How might I create an immersive experience in Saint James’s foyer while incorporating the history of the site? Success within this site would be if the occupants were able to feel all three of the historic events being told when walking through the walkway.

Devise
While wanting to incorporate the history of the site I also want to make sure the walkway space I am creating is fully immersive and engaging. Incorporating the fires St James has been exposed to, along with the Waihorotiu stream which once ran right outside, and aspects of the original building itself. I want the viewers to experience a thirsty lesson when walking through space and I also want my main material to be tiles to represent my artist model, Heather knight.

Feedback
Feedback and feed ford I got today were that my idea is almost 100% based on the history of the site, leading me to not base my whole concept around my artist models but to just reference them instead. So going forward on that idea I want to look into the history of the site; the Waihorotiu stream which once ran down queen street, the original sea level of Auckland harbor, and the fire that occurred right next to Saint James, whole also taking into concoderation Knight’s tile making rules.
