Marionetta Infection AU

There is a lot of words for this AU idea (just under 1k) so I'll put a spoiler line. Two notes I'll leave before you read (if you decide to) 1. Julia's pact is different, telling her that in a year she has to stop/cure the sick 2. This happens around/after episode 40 and the circus isn’t planning for a show but instead taking a break from everything and lying low after Aspett. The Kamille/Rainah misunderstanding never happened. Finnegan is still dead.

One day the puppies were playing outside as the circus was setting up a new location and found an odd patch of mushrooms, one eating a bite. The puppy grows sick (thin, rotting/decaying smell, aggressiveness- the circus magic seems to no longer work on them. They basically turn into aggressive zombies) and infects the others by biting them. Not realizing the puppies were sick, a few more crew members got sick from the puppies nipping them, including Kamille. It takes a few days to become fully infected, so the day she was bit Kamille is putting the puppies in a new outfit when one of them bites her. Kamille doesn’t think much of it, thinking the puppy was just playing.

At the same time as this, Dotty, Bob, Tonny, Sahed, Rainah, and Julia + a few background characters start to meet up and discuss what’s going on. They tie it back to the same symptoms the two performers had. Julia leaves the meeting and sees Kamille looking at her thumb, which is slightly bleeding, and asks what happened. Kamille said nothing, just a puppy got too excited when playing with her and nipped her. Julia feels unsure about this but doesn’t say anything and decides to keep a close eye on Kamille. In the meantime, the people who met up have decided to find a separate area to sleep in. Two stay up at night to keep watch. Julia tells Kamille she’s going to grab something to eat and never returns to the room. The first night, Tonny and her are on guard. The two talk and Julia feels worse about Kamille not being here. She admits to Kamille getting bit by a puppy and thinks that something will happen. Tonny tries his best to comfort Julia but in the end, she is still nervous. 

Sahed wakes up and says he’s going to grab some paper from his room and asks if Julia will come with him- he dislikes Tonny and wouldn’t want to wake Rainah. Julia agrees and follows. On the way to Sahed’s room, the Ah’kon mentions being awake the whole time and listening to their conversation. Julia feels a bit uneasy about him listening but Sahed says he saw the puppies acting aggressively towards others. They approach Sahed and Rainah’s cabin and enter, Sahed grabbing some supplies. Julia asks what he’s doing and he refuses to answer. He then asks if she brought any clothes from her room and she admits that she didn’t think of it. Sahed tosses her a spare outfit of his and tells her to change as he grabs the rest of the stuff he needs. (Oh come on, I HAD to do this).

When Julia finishes changing, she enters the main room and sees him waiting. Sahed tosses a compliment at her but she doesn’t say much, instead asking what he has planned with his supplies. Sahed admits that he thinks he can make a seal to cure the infection.

The two return back to the survivors and Julia tells Tonny, who’s hardly awake, about what happened. Rainah appears as well, saying she was on guard with Tonny but just walking around the room. 

I’m hoping that season 2 of Marionetta will show us more lore about finding seals starting from nothing. Over the course of some time, Sahed works on his seal and all characters grow closer to each other. Julia and Rainah become friends through Kamille. Sahed sticks to himself, but Julia grows to like Tonny some (platonic or romantic, up to you/endgame you’d like). One or two other survivors get infected (I’d like to think one background character and then Dotty). Bob grows silent after Dotty gets infected and the group has to kick her out and find a new location. Late one night, Julia and Rainah are on lookout duty. Julia is talking about her old life and her childhood with Kamille. Bob seems to wake up and the two girls don’t think much of it. He moves closer toward Julia and she backs away, starting to ask what he’s doing. Bob lurches forward, trying to grab her. 

At this point, depending on the ending the person wants, someone tackles Bob. I’d say the best candidates would be Sahed, Rainah, or Tonny. Whoever stopped Bob would become infected. If Sahed was the one to tackle Bob, he would never finish the seal and the circus would slowly die out one by one due to the infection. Maybe keep Julia and Tonny alive at the end and leave Julia to die by not finishing her pact in a year, leaving Tonny alone once again.

If Rainah tackled Bob, Sahed would grow depressed and stop working for a short period but then hyperfocus. Tonny would stop by and try to help, hinting at Sahonny in the past. In this time, Julia attempts to tell Sahed about her pact and ends up doing so, causing him to focus even harder on his work. The cure would be found and everyone and Julia would survive, the ending being whatever ship you prefer.

If Tonny tackled Bob, there would be more hints of Tonnyjul in what I previously wrote. Sahed stays silent but plays it off as no problem, but later opens up to Julia about him dating Tonny before. Because of Sahed opening up, Julia would do the same and tell Sahed about her pact. Sahed would find a cure and include Julia a lot more on his work, explaining everything he’s doing. Sahonny would end up on neutral/good terms and Sahejul endgame as Julia grew very close to Sahed in the time of Tonny becoming infected and the infection being stopped.

Hope this made sense, a lot of this was a brain dump lol. Feel free to use this idea or change anything!

It should have been a fond memory. Something to bring a smile to their face and bring back pangs of nostalgia for years to come.

while people are completely right sahed has power over julia (not just through the age gap, he just knows more about the world she was sheltered from) considering it "unhealthy" and "toxic" is silly, because that relationship is clearly meant to develope julia's character first and foremost. julia is meant to challenge her bigotry and beliefs about kalgratt. that's her arc. in the story she's on a terrifying time limit, and thus her best option is working with sahed, and that relationship is the prime way she loses her previous, harmful beliefs.

now, sahed is not bad, he's just is completely disillusioned with his fascist country and the controlling circus, and he's willing to manipulate or use force to change his circumstances. force, again, is the only way to make change in those systems. you need to get rid of tonny to free the circus (most likely), you need to overthrow the government to free kalgrattis and ah'kon (certainly). you do not need to manipulate julia though, and that's the stain on their relationship that he later gets rid of.

yes, he was super sketchy in the beginning. he doesn't know about the time limit on julia's contract, but he has used his charms and julia's situation to his advantage - julia didn't have to take part in his water seals sabotage to fulfill the contract, for example. BUT what followed that scene was her most important character development! and sahed does trust her now, they're in the *deep* together. when he properly explained the seals to her and became fully transparent with her - that's trust! that's developement on his end too!

so moving forward she'll probably keep on detangling herself from propaganda, and sahed will become more honest and open. the fact they have romantic and sexual tension will probably take a backseat for most of the story, because it is, you know, a fantasy comic and not a romance? sahed and julia change because of other characters and events as well, they're not kept in a vacuum together.

so yeah, maybe put those pop psychology instagram infographics on toxic relationships aside for a bit so you can actually enjoy the story?

Yay, unsolicited advice time! Or, not really advice, more like miscellaneous tips and tricks, because if there's one thing eight years of martial arts has equipped me to write, it's fight scenes.

Fun things to add to a fight scene (hand to hand edition)

It's not uncommon for two people to kick at the same time and smack their shins together, or for one person to block a kick with their shin. This is called a shin lock and it HURTS like a BITCH. You can be limping for the rest of the fight if you do it hard enough.

If your character is mean and short, they can block kicks with the tip of their elbow, which hurts the other guy a lot more and them a lot less

Headbutts are a quick way to give yourself a concussion

If a character has had many concussions, they will be easier to knock out. This is called glass jaw.

Bad places to get hit that aren't the groin: solar plexus, liver, back of the head, side of the thigh (a lot of leg kicks aim for this because if it connects, your opponent will be limping)

Give your character a fighting style. It helps establish their personality and physicality. Are they a grappler? Do they prefer kicks or fighting up close? How well trained are they?

Your scalp bleeds a lot and this can get in your eyes, blinding you

If you get hit in the nose, your eyes water

Adrenaline's a hell of a drug. Most of the time, you're not going to know how badly you've been hurt until after the fact

Even with good technique, it's really easy to break toes and fingers

Blocking hurts, dodging doesn't

.
