About a year ago I made some very low tech images to accompany the previous post’s content. (Also, I know that Soren Sorensen should have lines through the o.s but I can’t do that on my computer). I glued them into my diary and left the diary on a bookshelf near a damp wall- the brown spots are where the glue has gone a bit mouldy).

Pictures from the 1958 theater play Troll i kulisserna (Troll in the Wings), performed at Lilla teatern in Helsinki 1958, Stockholm in 1959 and Oslo in 1960. Written by Tove Jansson, directed by Vivica Bandler, music by Erna Tauro, Moomintroll played by Lasse Pöysti, Emma played by Birgitta Ulfsson. Understandably, because of the age, there’s no video documentation of this. From my research I’ve however gathered that the story loosely follows the one in Moominsummer Madness, after a flood Moomintroll, Misabel, Mrs. Fillyjonk and Little My are evacuated to the theater, much to Emma’s dismay. The characters then decide to perform a play on the stage. Due to the clunky Moomin costumes in the 1949 play Moomintroll and the Comet, it was decided to get rid of them this time around. At the beginning of the play, Moomintroll gets his costume head (referred to as his nose) removed by the fire chief character because it is too long. Children were traumatized by this, and a scene at the end had to be added where the fire chief returns the costume head to Moomintroll. This was the introduction of the classic Moomin songs written by Tove Jansson and composed by Erna Tauro. Each of the main five characters get a song to sing about themselves, and the show ends with everyone singing Slutsång (End Song), about the play they performed and the romantic view of fiction described as “real roses are pale against a hand drawn rose set“. This song in particular has become a staple for ending Moomin plays, shows and albums. The other songs are about Moomintroll being overwhelmed by the size of the world and ultimately finding peace in the now, Emma sings about the mundane in contrast to the fantastical (”It’s black, it’s white, it’s paradise blue, but a color you never seem to remember is gray.”), Misabel sings about sorrow and the comforting pleasure in feeling sorry for yourself, Mrs Fillyjonk sings about loneliness and keeping up a social role to get the approval of people she doesn’t like, Little My sings about the joy of letting go of your worries and fears. Troll in the Wings was the first time Lasse Pöysti played Moomintroll, a role he would return to in the future, cementing his role as the most definitive actor to have played the role. It also features Birgitta Ulfsson as Emma, previously she had played the Hemulen’s Aunt in 1949 and in 1969 she would return to play Moominmamma. Gunvor Sandkvist did her first portrayal of Misabel, a role she returned to in 1969. When performing in Oslo, Tove herself got to play the back portion of a lion. The full details on the production are hard to come by in anything but small snippets, I would love to be able to read the full script some day. It does still exist out there as Birgitta Ulfsson reused it in the 2002 reenactment of the play. (I know the last picture is from 1956, before this production, but it features key people from it and gives a good view of the small size of the theater.)

Second page:
Zeta: Mickey, oh Mickey, what are we going to do?
Mickey: Snammer has disguised himself as the legendary chicken knight. Obviously I can’t knock him out whilst he’s wearing that armour, can I? So I stole his hat...
And we’re going to run, up over the rooftops, until he’s exhausted in his armour!
Zeta: GASP
Third page:
Mickey: Don’t worry! It’s fine! ....Because now he knows where we are and he has more hope of reclaiming his hat...Zeta, it means that he’s motivated and he will run faster...
(Zeta is very anxious and Mickey has always had to look after her and console her).
