Buying Local Response
Buying local does have it’s benefits. As Kathrine Spriggs wrote in her essay On Buying Local, “Buying local is an important part of the response to many environmental issues we face today” (par. 1). She has many valid opinions as to why we should start buying more locally sourced food products, however her argument isn’t exactly sound. Buying locally over the years has become more difficult, since most food products are grown in places like California, Wisconsin, Florida, and Iowa. Really anywhere that has the type of land and climate to grow specific crops in mass. California is one of the largest producers of the countries walnuts, pistachios, almonds, kiwi fruit, avocados, lemons, melons, and strawberries. This is because California has a year round climate that is ideal for crop production. Even though other states can grow most of these same crops, most of them go through rough winters where those crops are unable to grow. This reduces production and can be damaging to those farms’ income. Locally sourced foods have been shown to have more health benefits, but they do come with a more expensive price tag. Thus, mass produced food products can become more of a necessity for families that are unable to afford locally sourced foods. Personally, I don’t have a definitive preference as to where I purchase my food products. It depends more on what I’m using those products for. For example, when I bake pies, I usually try to buy products from local sources so that I get the best ingredients for those pies. In the end, this debate of buying local versus buying mass produced products can be compared to the debate of eating everything in moderation. Because of how buying locally differs from buying from larger store chains, where you buy your food products is ultimately your choice.

Out of all of the commercials this one was the most powerful. I'm still unclear about what it's trying to advertise exactly, however, it does an amazing job communicating the message. After watching the commercial I wanted to look more into the organization that published it because of its lack of clarity. The commercial starts out with a mother and daughter and it looks as if they are preparing to make the journey of illegally immigrating to the United States. Throughout the commercial the daughter picks up scraps of cloth and paper all while going through unpredictable weather and the hot sun. Because the Super Bowl happened around the time of the general election I think that this was made in response to Trump either being elected or being one of the nominees for the general election. My reasoning for this is because during the second half, the commercial starts showing a team of construction workers starting to construct a wall. At the same time the video cuts to the mother asking for her daughter to have a sip of water from a man that they are traveling with and then to worker taking a long drink out of an ice cold bottle of fresh water. In my eyes this shows a clear difference in what the quality of life is like on either side of the prospective wall. Then at the end the mother and daughter finally get to the wall and their entire journey is put into vain when they discover a massive twenty foot wall looming over the US – Mexico border. However, in the last few scenes the mother and daughter find a large wooden door in the middle of the wall that happens to be open, reassuring that their journey was successful. How this commercial took you along this impressive and heart jerking journey leaves you wanting to know more about the organization because of how profound their statement is. Especially because it is done using little to no dialogue.

Asking Out My First Prom Date
It was the spring of my senior year. All the seniors were getting ready to finish their Senior Projects, and the juniors were working on organizing Junior Prom. Going to a small high school has its benefits, like being able to go to prom for all four years of your high school career. Which is exactly what I had done each of those four years, I even was crowned Prom King my junior year. However, I never had the guts to ask a girl to be my date. That is, until my senior rolled around.
So, going back to the beginning of the story. It was early April and all the girls were making plans to go dress shopping and whose house were they going to go get ready at, and the guys… well, our behavior really didn’t change. Since all we needed to do was put on clothes, that we already owned, that went with the dress that our date was planning on wearing. However, I didn’t have a date, so I really had no idea what I would wear to the whole event. So I got thinking, what if this was the year I asked a girl to go with me.
There were quite a few girls in my friend circle senior year. However, there was one who had caught my eye earlier that year. That day I decided that she was the one I wanted to spend my last prom with. What made it even better was that she is also a musician, like myself, so I knew that I could use some corny music puns for my “promposal”. However, I didn’t know what the best way to do was. I soon found the wonderful world of Pinterest. Within ten minutes I found the perfect idea. That idea can be seen in the picture attached to this document. Now all I needed to do was figure out the perfect time to do it.
It was two weeks before the prom and the first day that tickets were being sold. I figured, since our lunch group goes to the Biology Lab after we all finish eating, that that was where I would ask her. So while she was finishing her lunch in the cafeteria, I was in the Bio Bab waiting until the right moment to surprise her. When the moment came, one of my friends had ended up blocking the doorway so that she, the girl I was surprising, and I would have out privacy. Even though it was a kind gesture, I thought it was a little unnecessary. But none the less, I got her attention and showed her the sign. She said yes! Now it was time to plan our pre-prom arrangements.
The outfit choice turned out to be very easy, thankfully. She had bought a Badger red dress which meant I would only need to wear a suit with a white shirt and red tie. All of which I already had in my closet. Next was deciding where we were going to meet. Our friend group all decided we were going to meet at another friend’s house so we could all get our pictures taken before going to the dance. Eventually it was finally the day of prom. After we were all had our pictures taken we got into our respective cars and drove to the venue. Everybody had a great night full of good food, lots of dancing, and a very exciting post prom. In the end, my senior prom was probably the best prom I’ve ever been to.

The Importance of Music Education in Primary and Secondary Schools
Well before the existence of modern civilization, about 45,000 years ago, music has shown to be evident in the everyday lives of the Neanderthals that lived in that period (Gascoigne 1). From then to now, music has changed drastically; from the simple rhythmic beats in the late paleolithic period to the complex and grandiose orchestrations of modern-day cinematic soundtracks. However, these changes must’ve been taught, amongst others, in order for them to have taken place and spread. Music isn’t just organized sound. It’s a universal language that can be spoken, written, read, felt, and expressed. It allows people to communicate with each other and have conversation without the need for spoken word. Music teaches how important cooperation, communication, and creativity is when working with a group of people, and it builds those skills throughout a musician’s life. Music plays an influential role in everyone’s life, whether they know it or not, and when taught to children in as early as primary school, it can prepare them for interpersonal communication with their peers and future coworkers, it can enforce the mindset that “there are no wrong notes” (Wooten 00:03:37 – 00:03:40), only the notes that they think sound good, and it gives them a medium to express their inner selves.
In Greek, music, or mousa, literally translates into the art of the muses (Gascoigne 3). This definition indicates that music played a role in everyday ancient Greek life. Whether it was accompanying the dancing in a chorus or being an alternative to lyrical poetry. One of the major developments that the Grecians made was establishing music theory and they were the first to devise a way of writing down music (Gascoigne 3). Except, how is it that the basic theories and methods of writing music in today’s musical culture are the same as they were in ancient Greece hundreds of years ago? The Greeks taught them to the generations that succeeded them. Then those generations spread to other parts of the world and taught it to the people that lived in those parts, and so on. Ever since then music has been taught, whether it’s been taught indirectly, directly, or vicariously, and in today’s society learning music can now be beneficial to the cognitive development of children across the world.
Music isn’t just an art. Music is a language that can be spoken between people from different countries, cultures, backgrounds, etc. One great example of how music can be a language is jazz. Jazz in itself is a conversation where the rhythm section provides a key and time signature that acts almost as the topic of discussion, and then the soloing instruments that represent the people having the conversation. In most cases a smaller jazz band, usually a combo, quartet, or quintet, will have three chordal/rhythmic instruments, bass, piano, and drums, and one or two soloing instruments like guitar, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, etc. When the song starts the whole band is essentially talking about one thing, then when the solo section comes in the soloist offers their two cents, their argument, into the conversation. Then when it’s time for the next solo, the next soloist can either elaborate on the previous soloist’s idea, offer a counter argument, or say something completely different. As long as the musicians know what the topic is, they can “talk” about anything regardless of what their verbal language is. Because music is so similar to language, students who receive musical training tend to do better when it comes to learning language because both music and language get processed in similar parts of the brain (Miendlarzewska et al. par. 24). Musical ability has also been shown to aid in the learning of a second language (Miendlarzewska et al. par. 25). If children were to be taught instrumental and vocal music in elementary school, it would make it easier for them to learn and understand the language they’re learning at the time, for example English or Spanish, and it would also help those students learn how to communicate, listen, and cooperate with their peers. However, music doesn’t just help with the ability to speak a language.
Music has also been shown to have a positive effect on IQ and academic ability. In Ewa Miendlarzewska and Wiebke Trost’s “How Musical Training Affects Cognitive Development”, they write, “ … In a study by Southgate and Roscigno (2009) longitudinal data bases which include information on music participation, academic achievement and family background were analyzed. Their results show that indeed music involvement in- and outside of school can act as a mediator of academic achievement tested as math and reading skills” (Miendlarzewska et al. par. 35). This is because music uses, and helps stimulate, relatively the same areas of the brain that math and reading use. They also write, “For children, music lessons act as additional schooling—requiring focused attention, memorization, and the progressive mastery of a technical skill. It is therefore likely that transfer skills of executive function, self-control and sustained focused attention translate into better results in other subjects …” (Miendlarzewska et al. par. 33). Music is so much more than a form of entertainment. It helps reinforce the areas of the brain that deal with memory – short term and long term, multitasking, judgement making, and even the areas that deal with emotion competence and comprehension.
Enforcing emotional competence, also known as emotional intelligence, is a crucial part to a child’s development as it is the ability to release and express their inner feelings (Dictionary.com). Without it children would be unaware to certain body languages, tones of voice, and would fail to accurately describe and express their own emotions. Emotions can become very complicated, and when mistreated or understood, they can lead to mood swings, depression, and reoccurring dreams or nightmares about those emotions when they get older (Parvez par. 10,12,13). However, it’s been shown that adult musicians who play in ensembles tend to express a higher level of emotional intelligence, or a lower level of alexithymia – the inability to identify, describe, and express emotions, because playing in an ensemble requires more social interaction, which in turn requires more emotional competence (Theorell par. 31). Music is also known for having the ability to elicit and induce emotions in its audience which can contribute towards the prevention of alexithymia (Theorell par. 34). Because of this, children who grow up learning about music and receiving musical training will perform better in the workplace, maintain better relationships, and be more understanding of those around them. However, music doesn’t just have an influence on one’s emotional competence, it also has an influence on one’s creativity.
Creativity is by far one of the best disciplines a person can have in the today’s society. It allows people to come up with abstract and well thought out solutions to problems that no one else could solve. That ability is highly praised in the fields of computer science and engineering. Because the world isn’t perfect, the formulas and theorems that engineering students learn in college can’t always apply to real world scenarios. A lot of the time those issues need to be solved in a means completely different from what someone normally might do. As a result, people may fall victim of functional fixedness and fail to solve the problem. However, those who possess creativity will succeed and even thrive in such situations.
Music is also a form of expression. Like verbal language music can be used to convey a message, however, unlike verbal language, music can be more effective in conveying that message (Wooten 00:00:19 – 00:00:58). This is because music doesn’t always have to be understood to have its massage conveyed (Wooten 00:00:50 – 00:00:56). Because of this, music can be whatever the creator wants it to be, there is no wrong answer. Many famous artists write their songs from the inspiration of how they felt at the time, whether it’s heart break, happiness, sadness, or celebration. Music allows people to indirectly voice their emotions and it can be a very useful tool to cope with depression or anger because the writer isn’t projecting potentially harmful emotions on someone else. If children learn even the basics of writing a song, or any artform for that matter, it gives them the knowledge to be able to direct their emotional output to something other than the things they hold dear to them.
Music is everywhere, and it has a greater influence in people’s lives than they may think. Additionally, when children are taught music in schools it teaches and reinforces the skills and disciplines that are crucial to living a successful life. Musical training strengthens the areas of the brain that process language and can help children not only learn their native language but learn other languages as well. Performance in ensembles has been shown to increase a person’s emotional intelligence, which can help them with interpersonal interaction. Music helps to reinforce creativity which can help eliminate a person’s functional fixedness. And music gives people a way to express themselves, and release emotions, in a way that won’t allow them to be judged by others. If music is taught in schools around the world, in grades as early as kindergarten, children will benefit from the positive effects that music has on their development.

This paper was by far one of the best pieces of work I’ve written all year. It allowed me to expand on a simpler research paper I had written before in high school and add various rhetorical elements to formulate it into an argumentative essay. I then made it so that it would not only express my opinion on the topic but persuade the reader why music should be taught throughout primary and secondary school. For this essay we were assigned to write a position paper about something we felt strongly about. For me I knew that I wanted to write about how important it is that we teach our children music starting at a young age. This is because music can tremendously aid in a child’s brain development. The rhetorical appeals I used throughout this essay were ethos, logos, and pathos. For ethos I provided historical context to the beginnings of music and a quote from the great Victor Wooten. A critically acclaimed musician who is well known by the music community and by many music educators around the world. For logos I provided evidence of how music increases the IQ of children, and studies of how music increases a person’s capacity to learn languages and significantly increases emotional intelligence. For pathos I included multiple examples of how without all the skills and tools that music teaches, children would be at a disadvantage in today’s society.

The purpose of this assignment was to write a narrative about an event that happened to us recently or in years past. I chose to write about the first, and so far, the only time I asked a girl to go to prom with me, my senior year of high school. Writing this paper wasn’t as exciting as the other essay that is included in this reflection. Yes, it did test my ability to write in a context I haven’t really had any experience in writing, but it wasn’t as challenging. All I really needed to do for this paper was write, in first person, the event’s that had happened in the months leading up to prom, my senior year. Personally, I am not a fan of writing in a first-person narrative. At least in a personal sense. Mainly because it doesn’t challenge me to write creatively. Nor does it challenge me to do research in something that I find interesting, or that I want to learn more about. To me learning how to write about myself is rather pointless and it is something that I cannot seem to consider as valuable learning.
Reflection:
To be perfectly honest, my twelfth grade English class in high school was easily ten times more difficult than this class, English 101–006. This is because in my twelfth grade English class we not only went over more literary devices and we did a lot more essay writing. For this class we primarily did small reflective writing that I didn’t find helpful in my education. In addition to this, the dates of the assignments on the news feed were from last year’s class and it became confusing as to when assignments were due. The dropbox was also confusing to use. Mostly because the labels for the assignments weren’t named clearly and all of the assignments were posted in a non-chronological order which made it difficult to tell when they were assigned.
One of the few things I learned in this class was a brief refresher on rhetorical analysis. This was the first topic we went over in the class and frankly, the only topic we were taught in class. This consisted of knowing how the three rhetorical appeals, ethos, logos, and pathos, worked. As well as how and when to use them in various situations, for example, describing how the Mutt Love Animal Rescue website used rhetoric to get users to donate to their business.
My ability to actively analyze and identify the purpose of a text and what the audience it was written for was something I think we learned very little about. In class I don’t think we really learned how to do this. At least not formally. The only thing my instructor did was have us discuss a piece of literature in our textbook, then find out what the purpose was and what audience it was written for. They never actually gave us unique examples or exercises to find and describe the purpose of a text and its audience, except for those in the textbook. Nor did they teach us what to look for in a text during the class time. Instead we were required to teach ourselves by reading the textbook, however we wouldn’t discuss what the reading was about. To me this seemed to be a waste of my time because as a discussion class, the instructor should go over what we had read before the class. Then provide a lesson about what the topic we were supposed to read for the assignment, so we would be ready going into it. All in all, I felt that my skills of identifying purpose and an audience in a text didn’t improve much, if at all.
Another thing I feel we did not cover in the class was recognizing basic elements of persuasive and argumentative writing. This was another thing we had to teach ourselves from the text book. I do not learn well by reading out of a text book. And because of this I cannot say that my competence pertaining to this subject matter has improved. That is because I learn better from being given examples and talking about such examples. That is not something we did in class however. Instead we were supposed to read an essay from the textbook and then write a response to such essay explaining how it was persuasive to us. This is not a challenging task and I feel it does not require much effort to do. I questioned my instructors approach to this as I felt like I was never taught what appeals could be used when trying to persuade someone to do something.
Another thing we were left to learn ourselves was how to select topics and conduct research. As well as how to use that research. In fact one of our assignments was to cite our text book however we were never taught how to correctly create an MLA citation for any form of text. This annoyed me because we had to do research for our position paper and we had to cite our sources. I feel like my skills for conducting research have not improved as we never learned how to conduct good research.
To sum up this year, I think it’s fair to say that I have not learned too much in this class. As a composition class, I believe that I should’ve been taught how to compose instead of being given small reflection prompts and teaching myself most of the topics that were covered in the textbook.

Maybe College response
The students showcased complement the article well. There isn’t anything that they mention that isn’t mentioned in the article, however the students do describe how some of them feel limited by their family or the expectations of their towns. Based on the profiles, the student most likely to stay in their hometown after high school is Ryan Lee as he describes that he doesn’t want to go to a big university and would rather be working as a diesel mechanic. The student most likely to leave is Amanda Wahlsetedt because from her profile she seems more likely to get a job as a journalist. If I were a student mentor I would give them advice on how to make their college experience manageable. Being from a rural area myself I knew everybody’s names at my high school. However, in college there will easily be ten times more people in your graduating class than there were in you high school graduating class, or your entire high school. What I would tell them is that college is only as big as you make it, so find a group of friends you feel comfortable with first, and then branch out and meet new people. Success in college isn’t hard, it just takes time, dedication, and hard work, so try your best on every assignment and exam and if you don’t do well at first, there are still many more opportunities to make up for it so don’t worry. That’s what I would tell someone if I were their mentor.

Mutt Love Rescue

The Mutt Love Rescue website as a whole is does a pretty good of persuading users to contribute to their organization. They use cute pictures of their dogs as a pathos to get people to either donate to their organization, foster, or adopt their dogs. They use logos with the facts and figures they present, like how “$450 you raise translates into a life saved.” They also use ethos with how they say that they are a “no-kill” shelter. However, there are some continuity issues where from the mission page the “Saving a Life” link is replaced by “Sponsor”. They could also use an update on some of the colors because it doesn’t look as appealing to the eye. Additionally, they could use better cropped photos like the cartoon picture in the “Saving a Life” page. They could also show what events are coming up in the homepage rather than leaving it all in the “Events” page. The home page could also do a better job in drawing the user into the website by having their mission statement the first thing users see when they open the page. Other than that, they succeed in getting users to want to adopt their dogs.
