My Hebrew school is co-ed and general and Judaic studies classes are intertwined throughout the day(English first period, tanakh second, etc)-- Judaic studies are typically separated by gender tho
WAIT
Hebrew school is separate to regular school?
Y'all go to EXTRA SCHOOL?
dyall gone mad?
LOL yeah it depends on if you’re frum or not (folks who grew up frum: you go to day school or beit yaakov right and learn all your stuff there with secular stuff?). if you’re not frum, you usually go to hebrew school on sundays.
chabad runs a hebrew school on sundays too, so it depends on if you can go to a religious jewish school or not.

People talk about how the Jewish population of the world is still smaller today than it was in 1939.
The 1948-49 American Jewish Year Book says that there were an estimated 16,633,675 Jews on earth in 1939. (Yes, "estimated!")
And that a decade later -- three years after the Holocaust killed nearly 6,000,000 Jews -- there were 11,373,350.
Today, there are (an estimated) 15,736,800.
(It can be higher, depending on how you count it. But this is the number that seems consistent with how the American Jewish Year Book was counting it.)
But it occurred to me recently that that doesn't tell the whole story.
Because today, 0.02% of the world is Jewish. (Really, 0.019%.) But I bet it was different back then.
How different? And different how?
Turns out there are 8 billion people alive today. But there were a little more than 2 billion back then.
16,633,675 divided by 2,300,000,000 is freaking 0.72%.
0.72% of the world was Jewish in 1939. That's almost 300% more than 0.19%?
Even after the Holocaust, 0.49% of the world was Jewish.
Those are still tiny percentages.
But the effect of the Holocaust, the massive ethnic cleansing of Jews across the MENA region after it, and the massive pogroms killing up to 250,000 other Jews before it, has been that the actual proportion of the world that's Jewish plummeted by 75%.
We went from 0.72% of the world to 0.19% just during the last 80 years of all that.
And because it was literally over 50 years of genocides and ethnic cleansings all over the place, we also went from vibrant Jewish communities with thousands of years of history across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, to being almost entirely concentrated in the United States and Israel.
Little bit more in Canada and Australia, neither of whom seem to be handling that fact super-well. And smatterings in many other places.
It's just really fucking wild to me.
Not only that this is true. But that I had to put these pieces together myself, from everything I was learning by studying recent Jewish history.
It's very fucking weird, as an American, to live with the incredible contrast of knowledge and history, versus the overwhelming mainstream leftist message that Jews are a white European oppressor group.

TW: mentions of sexual violence against hostages/ International Women's Day
It was International Women's Day a few days ago and I am so angry at pro-Palestine feminists supporters on Twitter who still refuse to recognize the testimonies of the hostages on the sexual violence they endured during their captivity and call it propaganda.
Amit Soussana was forced to commit a s-xual act on her captor after taking a shower and developed a fear of showering while in captivity. She still has severe PTSD when she showers.
Moran Yadai's captor looked at her for hours everyday like a piece of meat and she testified that she neglected herself in order to convince her captor to not r-pe her.
Mia Schem was abducted while on her periods, and her captor willingly opened the door of the bathroom while she was changing her tampon. He then taunted her during her captivity saying he saw her without her underwear.
Noga Weiss father was murdered on October 7th and she was told by her captor to forget about him and that she was gonna have his babies.
Agam Goldstein-Almog captor told her they will find her a husband in Gaza, and she was coerced to recite islamic prayers and wear a hijab. Her mother Chen Goldstein-Almog, who lost her husband and her first daughter on October 7, was told by the captor that her daughter will be married in Gaza and she will never see her again. They also "rebranded" Agam into "Salsabeel" a Palestinian name, to further the humiliation and erasing her Jewish identity.
Think about every time the girls hostages had their periods and had to ask their male captors about it for pads = this is invasion of intimacy and humiliating. I think about every time Amit Soussana insisted that her captor asked her every day "do you have your periods?" = he wanted to know so he could r-pe her.
So many testimonies. So many names. And yet so many feminists on Twitter eager to defend Hamas atrocities on women and call Israeli girls liars. A man abducting you and telling you, you will have his babies is a form of s-xual violence. Even if the r-pe didn't occurred physically, the simple fact that they threatened the girls that they could impregnate them is a form of s-xual assault. SUPPORT THEM. SHARE THEIR STORIES. SAY THEIR NAMES.

hey goyim you don't know what zionism is stop saying it
zionism is not:
-murder all Palestinians!
-conquer Gaza!
-Jewish fascism
zionism is:
-an umbrella term for a vague but inherently Jewish ideology
-intrinsic to Judaism
-a belief in the Jewish homeland in historic Judea and Samaria, now known as Israel
-a yearning to live safe and free in that homeland
Jews are naturally argumentative with each other. we debate and disagree constantly and love each other for it. there are almost as many interpretations of, and approaches to zionism as there are Jews. for most of us zionism is peacefully living alongside the Palestinian people in our shared homeland. for most of us it's just Jewish safety, freedom, and self-determination in our indigenous lands. for most of us it's just living in a place where we won't be killed just for being Jewish.
for an extreme minority of Jews (such as Benjamin Netanyahu), it's twisted into some kind of violent pseudo-fascism.
But overall, zionism is a Jewish term for a Jewish concept and when Jews tell you you're using it wrong the right thing to do is to fucking stop and correct yourself.
I'm an anarchist, I believe in freedom and self-determination for all peoples and hope for a world in which we don't need the apparatus of the state to ensure that for anyone. I also believe in Jewish freedom, safety, and self-determination in our ancestral lands alongside the Palestinians who also call the land home.
my personal philosophy is best described as anarcho-zionism (with communist/primitivist leanings but we don't need to get into that now).
but yeah. you don't get to tell Jews what our words mean so fucking stop. and if you're frothing at the mouth to misbehave at me right now because of this post then you're only proving my point.
rant over I guess.
am Yisrael chai.

THE ANIMAL I'VE EVER SEEN
Shoutout to the maned wolf, which is technically neither wolf nor fox but has its own genus called Chrysocyon! Why -
Tumblr media
why are your legs so long?
I mean, intellectually, I understand that it’s because you live in grasslands and have evolved to be able to see over the grass, but emotionally… why? Are they?? Like that??? Surely there was a way to make your body more cohesive and proportional-looking?

I wish it were better known and appreciated that the majority of non-Mediterranean European ancestry in Ashkenazim mostly comes from people who willingly converted to Judaism, even despite great personal risk. As we've learned from genetic studies, most of these people were women; over 90% of male Y-chromosomal lines are from the Middle East and Mediterranean while about 60% of female mtDNA lineages are.
These European women and men knowingly chose to become Jewish despite the fact that they would be persecuted for it, that they and their children would be subjugated to exclusionary laws, and that they could lose their reputations and standing with their former communities. They could and were at certain times even executed for becoming Jewish or having romantic relationships with Jews, and would be murdered in pogroms like the 1096 Rhineland massacres because they were Jews.
Tumblr media
This man's name is lost to us today, but he became Jewish and remained Jewish in a hostile environment where there were zero benefits in wider society for doing so. With the recent massacres looming over his head, he was even anxiously considering the possibility that he might someday kill himself rather than give up his identity as a Jew should a mob come for him and demand he convert to Christianity.
Of course at times they weren't even given the option to convert/be baptized into Christianity. They were massacred along with the other Jews of the community.
Tumblr media
When it was discovered that Marina Davidovna Surawicza had converted to Judaism in the 18th century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, she was arrested, tortured, and eventually executed.
Tumblr media
The same thing happened to Maryna Wojciechówna and Paraska Daniłowna, both of whom were executed during the same time period because they converted and married Jewish men. They arrested Maryna at her own wedding.
Tumblr media
I understand the frustration, grief, and anger in posts where people respond to the deep, longstanding mire of antisemitic rhetoric that people use to hurl primarily at Ashkenazim to delegitimize them and their heritage because of their history in Europe. I understand what it is to watch people spin narratives out of misapplied discourse about modern conceptions and racial politics in countries like the USA, especially when those narratives become the foundation for excusing or promoting dangerous misinformation, violence, and hate against Jews just because some of their recent ancestors lived in Europe and may have had on average lighter skin, hair, and eyes, (none of which are exclusive to Europeans or to America's present conception of "white people.") I understand what it's like facing an onslaught of ignorant and false statements designed to delegitimize, deny, and accuse Jews for Bullshit Reason #263434.
I just want you to know that you have ancestors like Marina and the man from 11th century Germany whose name we'll never know, people with an extraordinary amount of bravery and personal conviction who chose to be Jewish despite knowing that they would be oppressed and perhaps even killed for it.
Do not let antisemites make you feel ashamed that these people are part of Am Yisrael.

Your friendly Black History Month reminder that Black Jews are JEWS.
Born Jews, Jews by choice, Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, Ashkenazic, Sephardic, Mizrahi, Israeli, diaspora…they are an integral part of all of our communities and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.
We still have work to do as a community to uplift Jewish POC, particularly Black Jews, but to my Black Jewish friends out there know that I see you and I will keep trying to do the work.
Happy Black History Month. ❤️

My toxic trait is that I don't have a strong emotional connection to Hallelujah. It was never in the repertoire of Jewish Music when I was growing up (heck not even so much now), so I don't find great religious meaning in it, nor do I particularly begrudge Christians liking it. The tune does slap hard for Lecha Dodi though.
