GETTING RID OF LADYBUGS
Categories: Common Pests, Country Services, Lady Bugs, Infestations
So what do you know about ladybugs? A ladybug is a small beetle with a reddish-orange shell, black antennae, head, and legs. Also known as ladybirds or lady beetles are commonly found in trees, crops, and gardens looking for aphids to eat.
Aphids are lady bugs’ favorite food and the reason why they were brought over from Asia in 1970 (to control crop-eating insects.)
These tiny pests have become experts at surviving our harsh Ontario winters and being a nuisance in the winter, spring and fall, especially for those living in rural and country areas.
Ladybugs find a protective building to spend their winters in and sometimes wake up to roam on warmer winter days.
Clients often call us asking, “How do I get rid of ladybugs in my house?”
Once they enter your house, it cannot be easy to get rid of ladybugs. They typically hibernate in large groups by releasing a pheromone that attracts other ladybugs around them.
This pheromone can last for a couple of years, making ladybugs revisit the same places from generation to generation. Infestations can grow to incredible numbers. They indeed are the unwanted repeat house-guest.
To prevent ladybugs from choosing your house for overwintering and to help prevent an infestation, follow these tips:
Fix any holes or punctures in all screen doors and windows
Secure the caulking around doors and windows
Seal any cracks or crevices along the foundation of your house
Rodent Control Lynn MA Plug any gaps in your roofing, vents, or attic walls
Ladybugs are known to release a yellowish secretion when they are disrupted. This substance can have a smell to it and stain some fabric surfaces. Therefore if you see a ladybug, get rid of it by sweeping or vacuuming them. If you are looking to release ladybugs back outdoors, take off the hose of your vacuum, place a piece of paper towel on the end of the hose before screwing it back in place.
The paper towel will act as a trap, not allowing the lady bug’s into the vacuum’s canister. You can then release the hose and the paper towel and let the ladybugs free outdoors.
We often get asked about the effectiveness of home remedies. When it comes to ladybugs, home remedies just do not cut them.
Contracting a professional pest control expert is the most effective and successful way to evaluate where ladybugs are entering your home, determine where these pests are staying during the winter months, and help you rid them for good.

FLEAS, KNOW ABOUT THESE PESTS:
It is every pet owner’s moment of dread - You find your pet constantly scratching itself incessantly. You come to the frustrating realization that it must be fleas, but don’t panic! While fleas are a nuisance, they are treatable and easy to remove from your home.
Signs of Fleas
A pet scratching is usually a sign of fleas, but some other signs indicate flea activity, such as:
If a pet develops hair loss in a specific area (such as by the hips or tail, where fleas typically reside)
“Flea dirt” or flea feces, which resembles ground pepper in pet’s fur, beds, carpets, and other areas where your pet frequents.
Where Do Fleas Come From & How do Your Pets Get Fleas?
In North America, the most prevalent type of flea is the cat flea. Despite the implication of its name, cat fleas attach themselves to any animal and feed off their blood. Fleas do not fly and are wingless, although they can jump from host to host.
Ant Control Lynn MA Through the late 1980′s, we saw increasingly severe flea problems annually in Ontario.
Fortunately, that trend discontinued in the early 1990′s. Today flea populations have been highly variable from year to year and place to place. It is anticipated that fleas' problems will arise again.
As with the rise in bedbugs, fleas will also increase in severity in the upcoming years and be difficult to control. The lack of residual insecticides available and the resistance to everyday products are likely the cause.
Flea control can be very frustrating and, at times, somewhat discouraging. Here are three steps to effective flea management:
Treatment of infested pets
Vacuuming and cleaning infected premises
Flea control help from a pest control company

EARWIGS, UGLY AND DANGEROUS:
Earwigs are rarely a welcome sight, with their long, thin brown bodies and angular pincers. In ancient folklore, tales were told of earwigs who would crawl into ear canals and lay eggs in the person’s brain, eventually driving them to madness.
Of course, there is no truth to these tales, though earwigs, like moths, beetles, cockroaches, ants and flies may wander into our ear canals by accident.
Earwigs are abundant in Ontario. Our typical earwig season usually begins around mid June and continues to October. Earwigs are relatively easy to identify by the prominent pincers or forceps on the end of the abdomen. Females pincers are fairly straight, while male pincers are more curved and caliper-like.
These pincers are used as both offensive and defensive weapons. Though they may try to pinch if captured or handled, they do not harm people. The common earwig is about 5/8 inch long and dark brown with a reddish head and pale yellow-brown legs.
They enter houses and structures either by accident or when seeking shelter, especially in the summer and fall or during periods of prolonged dry weather. Earwigs inside the house do not cause any harm or destruction. They are simply an annoyance or nuisance because of their presence (and sight). If disturbed, earwigs may produce a noticeable foul odor. Depending on the season earwig numbers can be astonishing.
How to Prevent Earwigs
The Importance of Backyard Maintenance
Raccoon Removal Lynn MA Earwigs are outdoor insects usually found in damp areas, such as under mulch, dead leaves, logs, and piles of firewood, boards, stones, and other debris or in rotted wood where they feed on moist, decaying plant material. Earwigs occasionally attack living plants, including vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants, which is a reason why many people consider them pests. Eliminate dead leaves from your backyard to detract earwigs.
Treat Cracks and Crevices in Your Home
Earwigs found inside the house can be swept or picked up and discarded. Treating indoor cracks and crevices at points of entry, and along baseboards, window sills and door thresholds provide benefit and help to keep earwigs from gaining entry.

WOOD AND GERMAN, TWO TYPES OF NUISANCE:
Panic settles in upon the first sighting of what you determine to be a cockroach. “Do I have an infestation?” you wonder. Visions of a hoard of giant brown bugs infesting your home plague your thoughts and are enough to give anyone nightmares, but let’s pause the panic for a minute. Do you know what kind of a cockroach is in your home? This step is essential in determining whether you may have an infestation or not.
While wood cockroaches and german cockroaches are generally grouped into the same category, they are different in terms of destruction and prevalence in a home.
Wood cockroaches are common outdoor/indoor dwelling insects native to North America and throughout Ontario. Their typical habitat is moist woodland areas, but they frequently become a household/cottage nuisance pest in Ontario Cottage Country, particularly around Georgian Bay, Muskoka, Lake of bays, and anywhere in Ontario cottage country.
The German cockroach is one of the most common and prominent cockroaches globally. These insects are commonly associated with restaurants, food processing facilities, hotels, nursing homes, apartment buildings, residential homes, and well just about anywhere.
Identification
Wood Cockroach
Wood cockroaches are very similar to the common household cockroach called the American roach; flat, oval body, long antennae, spiny legs, chestnut brown color. However, wood roaches are slightly smaller, about 3/4 to 1 1/4inchesh long, and the adults, especially the males, appear tan because of thecolorr of their wings.
Adults and large nymphs of the wood roach can be recognized by a pale, creamy whit,e or transparent stripe on the outer edgeofn the thorax. The pale edge extends onto the first 1/3 of the front wings of the adults Identificationn of smallnymphssmore complext and usually requires microscopic examination.
German Cockroach
The German cockroachisasmall cockroachhspeciesh, measuring about 1.3 cm (0.51 in) to 1.6 cm (0.63 in) long; however, they are known toget slightlyymore prominentr. It can be tan through brown toalmost black, and has two dark parallel streaks running from the head to the base of the wings. Although ithas branchess, it is unable to sustain flight.
Prevalence
Wood Cockroach
Wood roaches are not secretive; like theicousinsitheyey are active both during the day and at ni ,,,ht and they are less likely to scamper out of sight when approached. Also, they will wander about the house without congregating in any particular location. Spider Control Lynn MA The males are attracted to lights ,,ht and limiting porch light use in late May through July when males are flying might be of some benefit. Outdoor and Indoor treatments around windows and doors and along the foundation and proper crack and crevice treatments inside wilhe reducingng wood roach numbers. Some baits have proven to be successful in some situations.
German Cockroach
The German cockroach is very successful at establishing an ecological niche in buildings. It is very hardy and can be resilient and difficult to control. This is because of the large number of nymphs produced from each egg case, the short period between birth and sexual maturity, anthe thabilityty toto o hide due to their small sizeasilyze. This cockroach is also smaller thaanotherespe es so it can more easily hide and fiinstillll cracks and crevices to evade humans.
This cockroach can be seen in the day occasionally, especially if there is a large population or if they have been disturbed. However, sightings are most commonly reported in the evening hours as they are most active at night. This type of cockroach can emit an unpleasant odor when excited or frightened.
