Outlining Stories—Tip

When you’re beginning a new story, don’t try to write it beautifully. Don’t write nuance in the outline, don’t write flourish, don’t write impressively.

Write the most oversimplified, stupidly basic version of the story’s events as you can.

Don’t get caught up with making it sound good before it even exists.

If you’re finding yourself stuck, outline in short, easy sentences.

Like:

“Girl’s Sister dies, girl avenges death.”

“Girl destined to be queen. Doesn’t want to be”

“Boy A meets boy B on board a ship, fall in love, don’t want to leave.”

“Villain wants to hurt boy, teacher saves him”

“Man discovers time travel, goes to future, falls in love with historian.”

It’s easier to expand on a plot when you reduce their events to the most basic. Don’t worry about it sounding boring or stupid. Call Characters “A” “B” and “C.” Call the hero “hero” and the villain “villain.” Draw diagrams with big arrows, keep plot points to one or two sentences.

Nuance doesn’t exist in the first draft. Write your heart out.
