How Orchid and Joan Became Friends

His words faded out, but Joan was too intent on her newest target to even notice. "I'll just leave you two together to get to know each other while I go help Blanc out!" He tried again, practically throwing his special help-Joan-study notebook down on the table before turning to flee. "So please don't murder each other!" This time Joan watched him exit, lips turned down into a frown at her boyfriend's departure before she turned back to the almost predatory gaze of her new tutor. "Whatever," she muttered. "Let's just get this over with." Orchid finally broke from her trance at those words, easily pulling out a chair and settling down into it. Every movement was fluid, the epitome of grace. Show-off. "Why bother?" the taller asked. "Clearly you aren't interested in studying if X-kun isn't the one teaching you." "He'll be disappointed if I don't at least make an effort to get along with you," Joan muttered. Reluctantly she pulled out her own chair to slouch into it. Orchid shrugged. "Fair enough." "That's it? No judgement on how stupid it is to care that much about him?" Joan snapped her mouth shut. She hadn't meant to be that snappy about things she didn't want others to know she was sensitive about. Orchid's eyebrows disappeared into her hairline. "No? It's not like Shigeo doesn't inspire an unusual amount of devotion. And besides, you seem to care about him the usual amount couples do." "I killed someone who hurt him once," Joan blurted out before immediately slapping her hands over her mouth. Shit. Shit shit shit. "Really? Who?" Oh wait. She forgot that this was Orchid leaning towards her. "That other magical girl bitch who used to run around." "Her?!" Orchid's eyes lit up. "Now I'm interested. Tell me more." It was such a shame they couldn't explain to Shigeo why they were laughing together when he returned.

Sakura- primarily gold, pink highlights, always in huge pigtails, magically turn into improbably floofy hair and untied hair that's flower than physics should allow. Mood ring ribbons. Oumu- pixie cut, often gelled, dyes it neon colors all the time, really likes green with streaks at most Joan- Undercut, grayish brown Shigeo- Long, androgynous length, often ponytailed, sometimes braided, golden brown Blanc- Emo, black with different tips/streaks that can change color any time you're not looking, hair often mysteriously changes length Sakura- white hair, normally in a bun, lets loose to midback when transformed, black spots when transformed

On Being a Magical Girl

These things don't just happen, and not everyone has what it takes to become one. Magical girls are the warriors of gods, their avatars who take their power and fight for their cause. If you aren't of a matching bloodline with your sponsor, things can go wrong very quickly. Of course, many people from nonspecific bloodlines can become magical girls if they're compatible enough with their god of choice, although the consequences of mistakes there tend to be much more dire than if someone from the right family is incompatible. Being from a special bloodline but trying to contract with the wrong god tends to turn out even worse. Ideally, the magical girl gets the majority of the power in the relationship, the god transferring over most of their power in exchange for the magical girl's allegiance towards their goals. Beyond the ability to give advice and take their power back if their chosen one should break the contract, they should have no control. This rule can only be broken outside of the main family the god is bound with. Thankfully, no outside-family magical girl is powerful enough to be worth the time of a malicious god over trying to manipulate their normal contracted. Of course, not every magical girl is a girl, although most are. There is still a healthy population of magical boys and nonbinaries.

Sakura and Matsumodo

-Biggest rivalry on campus -Matsumodo must compulsively crush everyone she knows at Texas Hold'em before she will let them hang out with her -Sakura isn't impressed by her groupies and after losing the first time and being trained by Palandri demands a rematch -Rematch is interrupted but Sakura was very clearly about to win -She's fine with a tie, but Matsumodo wants to completely crush her and keeps challenging her -They never finish a match -Eventually get cast in the same play -Matsumodo hates Sakura for getting the main role while she's a side character -Sakura saves Matsumodo somehow -Matsumodo begrudgingly offers to help Sakura learn her lines -Tutors Sakura in physics and math -Spends more time with robotics club, calms down a little -One day realizes that Sakura meets all her romantic standards -Sweats

-Joru is the spider spirit -Yoru was her human form back when she was human -There's no real reason for this difference I just accidentally misspelled her name in the Mushi and her post and decided to roll with it -So I guess she decided to sacrifice her true name when she ascended to god hood -Only to have a conveniently similar new one

Kiro and Mushi

-Mushi laid dormant at her shrine, powers sealed away and sleeping deeply with no worshippers or a purpose to look over -When Kiro came over to build the school, the shrine was deeply overgrown, impossible to see -He purchased the land, went to clear out the trees where he had to -Disturbed the edge of the shrine's lands, awakened Mushi as an evil spirit -Mushi haunted the grounds for weeks, halting construction -Alarmed, Kiro sought to find the source of the hauntings -Discovered the shrine -Realizing his near crime and ashamed for it, he prayed for forgiveness and had his architect redesign the school plan to preserve the shrine -Mushi forgave Kiro -They quickly became friends

-The Rival -Japanese, but went to school in America for a few years -Very popular for her Texas Hold ‘Em skills -Has a weird natural charisma, everyone loves her for her mysterious air -She is very confused by this -Extremely anxious, afraid to show weakness, acts extremely arrogant to anyone who sees though this -Very gay for Sakura but afraid to say anything -Hates her at first, terrified of being upstaged, but later glad that she has an excuse to focus more on her true passion--robotics -Amazing poker face and insane luck at gambling -Desperately wants a pet -Loves loves loves reptiles, especially sneks -Her true magical girl guardian is a Komodo dragon -Fooled into thinking it's a wolf, seriously injured every fight because she can't control herself -Afraid of her abilities because of that

Mushi and Yoru

Mushi and Yoru knew each other long ago, back before they lost their true forms and Yoru was human. -Mushi was always the goddess guardian of a small shrine, always prayed to by Yoru's family -Priestesses often supplied by Yoru's family -Yoru's younger sister became priestess, Yoru visited shrine often to see sister -Mushi and Yoru both hated each other over fierce loyalty to the sister -One day a rival family attacked Yoru's estate, and Mushi's shrine was attacked as well and sacked -Sister killed defending the shrine -Yoru ran to the shrine; saw sister dead and stayed behind to help guard the body and shrine -Afterwards came every day to help Mushi and pay her respects -They became tentative friends -Eventually Yoru heard news of a great evil and went on a great journey to find it -Gave Mushi the family fortune as a farewell present, while Mushi gave Yoru a ring that would later become Sakura's transformation ring -Mushi was visited and sealed away/killed about a year later -Yoru died never learning what happened
