so like, being Femme™ is pretty intrinsically linked with preforming feminity for other women/butches/etc. but it's also like, sooo self fulfilling in it's own right. especially if im talking about fashion. the power clothes have.
if im preforming for queer people, im also preforming for myself. i am the star of my own show and thats true if theres an audience or not. i am my own audience. i love it because i love to preform. its drag. i love putting on a new identity and becoming something or someone new. i love taking inspiration from eras and styles and designers and icons and saying: "i can do that. i can become that for a day. i can embody this and im going to do it my way. im going to make it queer, im going to do femininity wrong enough that no one besides another queer person will understand me. im not going to blend in. im not going to follow trends for trends sake. i want to be indigestible to the cishet eye."
as much as hollywood tries to sell the elle woods type as straight we all know thats not reality. wearing all pink from head to toe is not straight culture. wearing functional mini chandelier earrings is not straight. being dressed in an evening gown to get coffee at 11am is not how straight people are expected to behave.
its subversive, its aggressive, its ostentatious. if a butch wearing steel toe boots and cropped hair is flagging, a femme wearing ten different prints in one outfit with a neon cane is a fucking color guard routine. its grabbing everyone in the room by the collar and saying "Look at me. I. Am. Not. Like. You." (but yknow, in a subtle classy way lmfao)
ive been preforming femme drag before i even realized thats what i was doing. baby punk back in 2009 at 13 rebelling against the straight expectations pressured against me. i got bullied mercilessly for it but nothing could make me stop. i dressed up for me, i dressed up for and with my (queer) friends. i emulated the people who were preforming gender non conformity on stage and in the movies. us being called a dyke in the locker rooms and lezbo in the halls made me fucking sharp and aggressive. it put the kickass in my boot and the take-no-shit in my fist. it gave me grit and guts and forced me to be confident. walking outside in full femme getup isnt easy, and its quick to get us fucking harassed and catcalled and possibly hatecrimed. especially in a small town or in the south or in the hood. especially if youre trans. but we fucking do it anyways and were fucking badass for it.
"femmes [are] soft pretty, women who will break a bottle over your head if you cross them."
shout out to all the other fashion dykes out there who put their soul (and safety) on the line every time they throw on their favorite outfit and live vicariously through their clothes. its not easy being subversive. its not easy being gender nonconforming. its a fucking statement. its a lifestyle. it's our culture. We do it for ourselves, we do it for our lovers, we do it so other queer people see us, we do it because we need to, and we do it because we love it. Dont let yourself forget it.

glass onion had lgbt rep in the way that i prefer: a character is shown to be gay in a subtle yet unmistakeably domestic way, and then nothing romantic happens and we go solve a murder with the power of friendship and violence

rian johnson has managed to evade all common ethical problems in his screenwriting and i want everyone to know that the knives out mysteries are a perfect representation of how to write about a certain community respectfully AND simultaneously not make a big deal of how good you are at being a diverse writer.
in knives out and glass onion, both main characters are women who have been wronged by the other main character(s)—in marta's case, she experiences xenophobia from the thrombey's constantly; in andi's, she came up with a billion dollar idea which was stolen by a white man. when she took him to court for it, her entire friend group sided with this man; this directly affects helen after andi's death.
andi and marta's stories specifically represent real experiences for women who are minorities in america, but the stories are told without being too ham-fisted or obvious about it. these aren't stories about racism, xenophobia, and misogyny, they're stories involving racism, xenophobia, and misogyny, which i feel is something you don't often see. they're not triyng to prove a point by telling these stories, they're just stories being told—it's a difference that's hard to describe, but you know it when you see it. it's got less of a looking-into-the-camera-for-emphasis vibe.
alongside this, benoit was never a white/male savior to neither helen nor marta (respectively). he helped helen when she came to him about andi and he stood behind marta when he saw the tox report, but he never took over the case and they were never treated like damsels in distress. in the end, helen and marta took control of their own revenge and benoit nudged everyone else to the side while they did it. benoit is not the hero of these stories, helen and marta are.
this is good fucking writing!!!! i need film bros to be positively insufferable about rian johnson NEOW
edit 12/26/22: i've been told that ana de armas is a white latina. genuinely i did not know, she always looked brown to me and i haven't seen her in anything other than knives out, that's truly my bad. i've updated the post now to change the language about marta, other than that everything remains!

I know polyamorous people aren’t good at math so here if your seasonal reminder:
If you have ONE partner you need at least ONE present.
If you have TWO partners you need at least TWO presents. One for each.
If you are dating a DRAGON you need a HOARD of presents.
If you are dating NO partners you need at least ONE present because YOU deserve something nice.
This has been math lessons with your mutuals.

Sorry, my what? My pronouns? Oh, yeah I'm between genders at the moment. No, it's cool, I quit my last gender a little while ago because it really wasn't working out. I don't know if I even have a dream gender anymore.

Survived dealing with my bloody family.
Now I'm gonna go deal with two bottles of my favourite wine.
My willingness to gentle parent my mom is at all time low, meaning it's fucking zero. And if she wanted a therapy, she should go find a fucking therapist.
