NEW ALBUM: "Wilderness Years" by Michael Parallax
In another life, he might be a Buddhist Youth Minister
The Tallahassee-born shaman of sweat & sensitivity released Wilderness Years with Spirit Cat Tapes on Monday. The album’s single “For Everyone Who Still Believes In Love” preempts the abiding question blurbs (such as this) hope to answer: Who is this music for?

Michael Parallax // Wilderness Years
…
Choosing just one track to highlight from this album was almost impossible. Michael Parallax runs the gamut on pooling all sorts of various genres and then picking and choosing generously over the course of his latest album Wilderness Years. Sure he opens the album with some Sufjan-indebted spiritual folk pop, but that doesn’t mean he won’t transition into some experimental cyber dream pop or synth-heavy Caribbean funk with autotuned vox just a couple of tracks later. But ultimately it came down to one track for me.
On “Heart, Kid” Michael toys with notion of blog pop by blending what sounds like a R&B-inflected MGMT with maybe a little bit of M83 on a sugar high (that saxophone). But don’t let that trite description dissuade you from pressing play though, because what Michael deals in most heavily is heart and melody. Both of which have a strong showing on “Heart, Kid” and the rest of the album as a whole. Now some people might find this sort of ADD-riddled genre-hopping to be a headache, but Michael’s indomitable spirit is the thread that can be found running through all of these seemingly disparate tracks. Well, that and his insane talent for doing pretty much whatever he wants and making it sound absolutely gorgeous.

NIGHT WITCH
Heavy, intensely angry and unapologetically feminist (the way it should be…). Night Witch from Tallahassee, FL are Nathan, Nick, Shaw and Rosie. Their songs cover topics such as alienation towards minorities in the hardcore punk scene, privilege, anxiety and hopelessness towards our current capitalist system. Their Winter 2013 Demo uses occasional samples and slower instrumental parts to contrast the explosive bursts of anger such as the flat out 25 second song ‘Dresses’. The demo is physically available as a tape from Spirit Cat and it’s their 13th release (Ooooo witchy!).

Grounded - Untitled (SC012)
<a href="http://spiritcat.bandcamp.com/album/untitled-sc012" data-mce-href="http://spiritcat.bandcamp.com/album/untitled-sc012">Untitled (SC012) by Grounded</a>
Borne of the friendship of three Tallahassee residents – Steven Perez, Malcolm Martin, and Geoff Perkins – Grounded makes music that isn’t focused so much on conventional songwriting as it is the building up and dissipation of momentum. Their latest, untitled release features a host of noisy instrumental buildups, jangly guitar detours, alternately drowsy and impassioned vocals, and even an ambient passage; on the whole making for one of the best and most interesting Florida releases of the year.
Tapes are available here.

EEEYAH YEAH

Jake Tobin // TORMENT
Chill Mega Chill is pleased to announce TORMENT, the inaugural full length LP from Tallahassee musician Jake Tobin. Recorded alone over the course of a few months at his woodland compound, Tobin’s songs display a white collar work ethic of almost surgical precision. Here is guitar slanging and avian twittering, drenched with lilting shrieks from a (possibly) stolen saxophone. Brassy drones and stuttering keys occasionally drift in like clouds of airborne toner. These are tunes for confetti-filled elevators or long drives to lunch dates with corporate suits at drab cafes. TORMENT proves to be a caustic but also compassionate take on pop, cutting the safety net out from the 9-5 malaise. Jake Tobin’s TORMENT, coming out on 12” vinyl this Spring on Chill Mega Chill.

Philospiders - Love is Dead

<a href="http://philospiders.bandcamp.com/album/love-is-dead-ep" data-mce-href="http://philospiders.bandcamp.com/album/love-is-dead-ep">Love Is Dead EP by philospiders</a>
Many times artists and bands are discovered after their disbandment, often times these groups impact us more than if they were still around. Tallahassee’s Philospiders is the now defunct experimental duo of Adam Devlin and Jordan Connors. Started in the summer of 2010, the group constantly redefined their sound with each show, never performing the same set or song twice. No-input mixer, skittering live drums, and blasts of distorted tape loops permeated their formless image as a band. The surprise and uncertainty of their sets that not only made them an exciting group to watch, but also raised the question of how a cohesive album would sound when the group decided to finally have a release. Released by our friends at Cookies and Cream Records, their self titled debut is a beautifully surprising mix of chopped samples and field recordings, minimal techno, broken IDM, and disorienting sound collage. Along with their debut, you can check out their new EP, Love is Dead, on their bandcamp.

Permanent Makeup - The Void...It Creeps

<a href="http://permanentmakeup.bandcamp.com/album/the-void-it-creeps" data-mce-href="http://permanentmakeup.bandcamp.com/album/the-void-it-creeps">The Void... It Creeps by Permanent Makeup</a>
The lovely folks from Permanent Makeup sent us their album a while ago and we haven't been able to put it down since. Once you make your way through the cloud of feedback, the crafty staccato guitar work of James Bess presents an energy leaving you pounding your body wanting more. Chris Nadeau and Susan Dickson have an uncanny connection on bass and drums that bring a force that may be subtle at times but quickly reaches deep into your innards and demands more of you.
You can find there CD and/or LP, which is out on New Granada Records, here. They will also be playing with Chelsea Light Moving in the beginning of November. Get tickets here.

The Southeast Art Collective
A little over a year ago we were able to share with you The Southeast Art Collective. Well it seems that the group has bonded together once again and have big plans for the future. We here at Spirit Cat always feel so much better about the Florida community when we see musicians and artists working together to inspire one another.

Anamorphic Orchestra
Anamorphic: a distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to occupy a specific vantage point to reconstitute the image. Orlando ambient sound architects Attached Hands began a collaboration in January with budding Portland, Oregon arranger Alan Singley,( http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-19690-the_alan_singley_orchestra_saturday_sept_29.html ) sculpting a sprawling, sexy, and often sinister symphony. It's musical cinema, epic and strange. Once heard, it becomes obvious why they've dubbed it: Anamorphic Orchestra.
Clarinets, flutes, oboe, cello, vintage synths, drums and more unite. The pieces are challenging in all the right ways, a sensual delicacy for the avant garde, and yet suitable for a casual listener. Attached Hands have been active in Orlando's experimental underground for a while now, having released a handful of boutique releases. Singley was long ago a fixture of post-millennial Orlando in underground projects Pilots Versus Aeroplanes and Missouri Loves Company before settling in Portland. Annually, he and Attached Hands would come together to jam and plot what would now become Anamorphic Orchestra. The one-time performance will be held at a unique, grand theater on bustling Virginia Drive called: The Venue. The concert is all ages, priced to be available to all. Held on a Wednesday evening, the concert will be a mid-week sonic vacation, mostly seated with an intermission, bar with I.D, and plenty of lovely property to roam and mingle. An epic collaboration of top experimental artists with a large ensemble, not in New York or Los Angeles, but the City Beautiful: Anamorphic Orchestra.
