Remembering a yet another lost soviet Holmes adaptation [taken from here]
Another lost televised play, based on the Valley of Fear of all things, that is also a musical. Holmes was played by none other than whole ass Sergey Yursky and Watson by Mikhail Danilov, who funnily enough re-appeared in My Dearly Beloved Detective as a Mrs. Hudson substitute.
#sergey yursky#russian holmes#thats just about a lost holmes play number three#the blog where i took the pics from also shows english newspaper slop about the second lost play with lanovoy#that one was a stage play through and through so sure it was always destined to be lost forever#but it is sure immortalised by newspapers trying to spin in into some commie scandal#classicccccccc

Cuz my draft for The Deadly Fight (aka Soviet Holmes' take on The Final Problem) got lost, I'm skipping ahead to The Tiger Hunt (aka Empty House)
first of all: the titles! They are so good! I love them
Watson reading Holmes' letter to Mrs. Hudson multiple times
Watson and Mrs. Hudson entering Holmes' room about a month after the incident and the camera pands over all his stuff: the chemical set, the violin, pictures on the wall, his archive...while a slow version of the theme song plays (my heart).
Watson picking up Holmes' violin and playing it
Everyone bullying Watson over his padre disguise
Ronald Ader being a badasssss
they included the entire conflict between Ader and Moran and the entire buildup to the murder! Like, everything is here!
Granada: we probably should not show Ader's corpse. It's bloody and all. Would be too upsetting. Soviet: pathetic
They made Watson the main suspect in the murder of Ronald Ader? Omg? That is so cool?!
Gregory "the murderer was floating in midair" Lestrade
dramatic theme song
BOTH WATSON AND MRS HUDSON FAINTING ROFL XD (in all honesty this scene is so touching and sweet)
Everyone crying at the reunion. Even Holmes
Watson has a little notebook!
Mrs. Hudson and Mycroft pupeteering Wax!Holmes (they're having so much fun)
Watson gently checking whether the Holmes he is talking too isn't secretly made of wax too
Lestrade being fucking speecheless seeing Holmes alive and tbh I cannot tell if it is because he is overjoyed or because he is disappointed
Holmes musing on fighting evil
Seriously this is such a good adaptation and Final Problem/Empty House is the best part so far!

my thoughts on soviet sherlock holmes
I love just how married holmes and watson are in this adaptation. that moment in the king of blackmail when holmes just grabs watson's hand?? and that moment in the tiger hunt when they stand next to each other smiling?? honestly waited for them to kiss.
diagnosis: married. (i'm not even starting on how watson literaly looks grieving while he's telling holmes about his future marriage. and no music is playing at all. why would you make it so silient if you wanted it to be a happy moment)
I love that holmes is wearing glasses in this series and in good half of the episodes we get to see someone (mostly watson) eating. i have a bunch of other moments i love, but i'm writing this instead of sleeping so please forgive me for being too lazy to translate them from my notes to english
I love what we even got a bit of crossdressing and holmes being drama queen and theater kid. and then in the treasures of agra they make holmes fall in love(-ish) with irene adler and make jokes about women not being smart. who do i kill for that
honestly the treasures of agra and the 20th century approaches were a bit dissaponting, especially after the hound of the baskervilles episodes, which i liked a lot. they're fun and we get to see the most gorgeous actors here, do i need to add any more? (alla demidova, when i catch you...)
Also, I think it's a bit different experience for me to watch this adaptation than to most of you, 'cause it's kinda a culturally significant thing for post-USSR countries (i think) and I consider it fun that I never watched it before. now I got to watch something in my native language which i never do. the "don't lose heart" moment hit harder when i was actually watching it.
Absolutely loved Solomin's Watson btw. He's just too cute

Happy Birthday to the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin!
Here are some beautiful Palekh paintings from the late 70s / early 80s by Kaleria and Boris Kukuliev depicting Gagarin and others in scenes of celestial fantasy.
