Spirit Work: Choosing Signifier Cards for your Companion
I just wanted to share a technique I use to make communicating with my companions so much easier. If you are like me conversations with companions can get muddled especially since all of my companions have free reign of my house. There are times it can get kind of confusing as to whom I am talking to. Plus it’s always good to have a safety mechanism in place when dealing with spirits. The way I do this is by using signifier cards! This can be helpful on low energy days where you just aren’t up for telepathy or if you have a day filled with doubts. A signifier card is a Major Arcana card that is associated with a particular spirit. I usually have my companions pick their own and this is how I do that….
Step one: Pull all of the Major Arcana out of your deck and let your companion look at them for a second. I’ll usually get an idea of the cards they like right off the bat by doing this.
Step Two: Explain what’s about to happen. I’ll usually say something along the lines of… “So we are going to pick the card that you can use to tell me you are here or if you want to add emphasis to a question. This card will represent you but it doesn’t have to be spot on so don’t worry about picking the exact right one.” One of my companions had a hard time choosing and so I make sure they understand it’s ok to take their time or not know right away)
Step three: Pull three of the Major Arcana cards and line them up. You can do more or less depending on what makes more sense for you. It doesn’t matter which way they face but you can move them so they aren’t reversed if you want to.
Step Four: Pull out your pendulum! It can be a necklace or a needle on a string just something to help you figure out which one they want. Tell them to pick one card out of each set of three. If they can’t choose between multiples pull them all. If they don’t want any of them get rid of all of them. I’ll usually have them swing the pendulum in a circle for the card they chose and a straight line for cards they don’t want.
Tumblr media
Step Five: Keep doing this in groups until you have narrowed down all of the Major Arcana. Next do it again! Pull the narrowed down Major Arcana stack and narrow it down even more. Keep doing this until you only have one card left!
That card will be the signifier card for your companion. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a few times for them to remember to use that card. They may have just forgotten. I also advise that you write down the card chosen so you don’t forget either.
Happy bonding! Please let me know if this helped you!

Quick note: Do not work with deities from closed cultures if you’re not from said culture. It’s not cool, everybody.
Card One: Introductions
Fairly straightforward. This card is the deity introducing themself. This is the stage where you should verify and make certain you know who you’re working with.
Card Two: Shaking Hands
This card represents the deity’s first impression of you. What energy are you bringing to the table? What do they see when they look into you?
Card Three: Have We Met?
Has this deity had their eye(s) on you? Is this their first time you’ve piqued their interest, or have they hung around since childhood? Some deities may refuse to answer this question or redirect.
Card Four: The Nature
The general tone of your relationship. This is a general feeling that both you and the deity bring to the table.
Card Five: Before I Go…
What advice or wisdom does the deity have to impart on you? This could be a nod of encouragement, a stern talking to, or even just a casual shrug.
Card Six: In The End
The ultimate outcome of the relationship you’re seeking with this deity. Like the first card, fairly self explanatory.
Hey all! This is the first custom tarot spread I’m posting online! I might do more of these in the future! I’m super nervous, and I hope this is helpful to somebody out there. Have a good one!

Tarot Cards: Interactions
When performing tarot readings, you should always take a look at how the cards are interacting with each other in order to give you a more in depth analysis of your answer.
Figures that face to the left are passive, and relate to the past.
Figures that face you directly are present, and are asking for your immediate attention.
Figures that face to the right are moving forwards, and relate to the future.
If two tarot cards are facing each other (Card I looking towards the right, with Card II looking towards the left) then they are directly connected.
Tarot cards that have multiple figures facing in different directions often represent an active situation.

small tarot readings with deities
recently I’ve been coming up with more questions to ask deities while reading tarot. these are short and sweet, though you can expand upon them, but they’re good for those moments you just… don’t have a lot of time or energy but you want to reach out. feel free to share more ideas!
If you aren’t sure who (specifically) is around, one card for the / each deity can help you either with their intentions or their general theme/vibe what have you
What are you here for?
What area of my life do you want to help me with?
What do you want me to let go/stop doing?
What do you want me to start doing?
Is there something I’m ignoring?
Have you been sending me signs I’ve not been seeing?
Things I should stop worrying about?
A lesson you’ve taught me in the past that I need to remember (is nice for deities you have a longer relationship with!)
What do you want me to offer you? (Look at certain things in the card that might jump out to you, or e.g. pentacles for coins for Hades, or look for more themed offerings, e.g. ‘something that reminds you of stability and authority’ for the Emperor, etc.)
What activity can I do as an offering to you?
What can I stop doing as an offering to you?
A topic to journal about with your deity
A topic to make art about/meditate on/do a more in depth reading about, whatever you’d like to do
Ask some advice on a thing you’ve been struggling with, anxieties you have, issues you’re dealing with, worries, etc. Just one single card of advice from Them can really help sometimes.
Quit this bullshit: sometimes you just need to hear where you’ve been sabotaging yourself clearly. You can specify that they do not have to sugarcoat (but they can, if you prefer).
What to prioritize–often we think that we need to focus on something while in fact it isn’t as important and stressful as we might think.
Even telling them your darkest, most painful feelings, something you’ve been hurt by recently, and pulling a card as advice or just as a guide to help you feel better can be very nice.
Something to do as self-care (Apollo likes to sneak this in even when I’m not asking)
A follow up of a reading you did recently, or even months ago that was kind of important or is still relevant to you right now. Ask how they feel about it now, or if you’ve grown/learned, or how you can see that you improved
Actually, just a general ‘how have I grown in the past few weeks/days/months’ can really help you feel less stuck
“I have this wacky idea for an offering or devotional act but I’m not sure if you’d enjoy it. Would you like me to do this?’ Helps if you’re too nervous to just try it out.
I want to do x and y for you. Which (first)?
Advice on approaching… (another deity, an upcoming event, the day/week, etc.)
Got kinda long but I hope this can give you some ideas on what to focus your readings on. They’re not revolutionary but sometimes a reading without any focus can be really overwhelming!

NonVerbal Ways to Communicate with your Guides/God/the Universe/etc
I'm sure I'm not alone in the experience as a neurodivergent person that the advice to "just talk to your guides~" is extremely unhelpful because I'm frequently nonverbal or my selective mutism is currently making that not really possible
Journal! Write out your feelings, how you day was, what you want to manifest, tell your guides about yourself, etc. You could also do some channeled writing too if you feel so inclined!
Visualisation. This is especially useful if you have imaginary friends/comfort characters that you think about a lot. You can close your eyes or not but think of yourself sitting with this friend in a comfortable setting and talk to them, even if they don't respond, they're listening and they care.
Making playlists! If you like using music to express yourself and your mood, spend some time making playlists of your favorite songs that you find express your current emotions, ambitions, worries, or songs that make you happy/calm. You also get some bomb personalized mood playlists!
Along the same line, making your own music can work the same way as journaling! Writing lyrics, playing an instrument, creating anything really as long as you put your heart into it.
Art! Some of us are more visual communicators so drawing your emotions and feelings, desires, your day, etc can be a great way to express yourself to your guides! It doesn't have to be good, as long as you are creating!
Pinterest boards! Vision boards on Pinterest are a great way for me to collect my thoughts. I have a shit memory so it's nice to go back through it and remind myself of what I'm working towards. This way your remind yourself and your guides at the same time!
If you prefer words, you can make lists! I have over 80 notes in my Google notes account and it's a great way to organize my chaotic thoughts. I have a few different lists of my ultimate goals and what I'm focusing on right now. I even will list out the steps to get to where I want to be! You're working together with your guides to figure it out!
If you feel comfortable enough to speak, but feel weird doing so alone or to yourself you can try talking to your pets! I used this technique to help me in school and had to read the Odyssey because it was hard to understand.
If you have difficulty recognizing your emotions sometimes (like I do!) then that's okay. Just brain dump and write about how frustrating it is that you don't know how you're feeling. Just try to keep going and usually you'll find some emotions hidden in there~
This is just what I can think of right now! Feel free to reblog and add on your own ideas/tips!
