Mystic Hymn of Sant Tulsi Sahib: Dil ka Hujra Saf Kar - Light and Sound on The Path
Tumblr media
“The original copy of ‘Ghat Ramayana’ written by Saint Tulsi Saheb kept in a glass case in the ashram of Saint Tulsi Saheb in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh.”

Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras had some Sufi or Muslim disciples. Sometimes he composed hymns for them, the most well-known of these being a hymn addressing Sheikh Taqi. The one below seems to be in this category. It was published in Ajaib’s Grace magazine, May-June 2003.
Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, India:
Chorus:
Dil ka hujra (1) saf kar, jana ke ane ke liye,
Dhyan gairo ka utha uske bithane ke liye.
Translation:
Cleanse the chamber of your heart, so that the Beloved may enter,
Remove all the foreign impressions, so that He can take His seat there.
Verse:
Chashme dil se dekh yaha jo jo tamashe ho rahe,
Dilsita kya kya hai tere dil satane ke liye.
Translation:
See with the heart's eye the astonishing spectacle of this world,
Oh heart -- ravishing scenes appear there to entice you.
Ek dil lakho tamnna us pai aur zyada havis,
Phir thikana hai kaha uske tikane ke liye?
One heart, with many desires, and always the lust for more,
Where is there any place for the Lord to come and reside?
Nakali mandir masjido me jae sade aphosa hai,
Kudarati masjid ka sakin dukh uthone ke liye.
It is a great pity that, going in the false [imitation] temples and mosques,
The indweller of the true mosque [the human body] is made to suffer.
Kudarati kabe ki tu maharab me sun gaur se,
A rahi dhur se sada tere bulane ke liye.
We should listen with attention in the prayer niche of the true Kaaba, (2)
The Sound is coming from the Court of the Lord and is calling you.
Kyo bhatkata phir raha tu e talashe yar me,
Rasta shah rag me hai dilvar pai jane ke liye.
Why are you wandering around lost in search of the Beloved?
The way to reach the charming one lies through the shah rag (3)
Murshade kamil se mil sidak aur saburi se taki.
Jo tujhe dega faham shah rag ke pane ke liye.
O devotee, meet the Perfect Master with sincerity and patience.
He will give you the secret to find the shah rag.
Goshe batin ho kushada jo kare kuch din amal.
La ilaha allahu akbar pai jane ke liye.
If you do the practice for a few days, the inner way will open before you.
It is the path to reach Allah, the One God, the Most High.
Yah sada Tulsi ki hai amil amal kar dhyan de.
Kun kuran me hai likha allahu akbar ke liye.
This is the call of Tulsi: O practitioner, do the practice with concentration.
The kun [Shabd] described in the Koran, will take you to Allah, the Most High.

NOTES:
______
(1) A hujra is a small room for solitary meditation attached to a mosque.
(2) The Kaaba is the most holy place of Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca and the maharab or prayer niche indicates the direction facing the Kaaba in a mosque. The maharab or prayer niche of the true Kaaba is the third eye on the human forehead above and between the two eyes, alternatively called the Shiv netra or tisra til.
(3) The shah rag or "royal vein" is the central, subtle vein on the forehead that leads to Trikuti. It is also called sukhman nari.

"That which you came into this life to obtain is the Name of the Lord, which can be found in the house of the saints. Trade in your ego and gain back your soul, and in the scales of the heart, weigh only the Name. Carrying only the Name, begin the journey in the caravan of saints, shedding all else that is false and would bind you. Then all will bless you, and your face will be radiant in the home of God. Few are they who trade in this commodity. Nanak is ever a sacrifice unto them." (Guru Arjun Dev, Book of Sukmani, Peace Lagoon translation)

Once I happened to visit Agra and I got one book entitled Prem Bani by the late Hazur Rai Saligram Maharaj. In the book it is written, "Persons with hatred, prejudice and selfishness in their minds can earn nothing but more sufferings, for themselves as well as for others by doing inward practice. But, one, with shortcomings and faults, who cherishes a strong desire to get rid of his shortcomings and faults also, would surely be benefited by simran, dhyan, and bhajan. The reason for this is that by daily practice of simran and regular concentration, the will power of a devotee becomes strong and he becomes capable of overcoming his faults and weaknesses." (a quote from Huzur Maharaj Rai Saligram by way of Baba Faqir Chand found in the book, The Unknowing Sage)

Gospel of Thomas Studies - Message and Key Verses: Need For A Living One, Not Just Old Scriptures
Tumblr media
52. His Disciples said to him: Twenty-four prophets preached in Israel, and they all spoke of you. He said to them: "You have ignored the Living One who is in your presence and you have spoken only of the dead."
59. Jesus said: "Look to the Living-One while you are alive, otherwise, you might die and seek to see him and will be unable to find him."
5. Know what is in front of your face and what is hidden from you will be revealed to you. For there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed.
(108) Yeshua said, Whoever drinks from my mouth will become like me. I myself shall become that person, and the hidden things will be revealed to that one.
What the Living Master Reveals to the Student
17. The Master says: I will give to you what eye has not seen, what ear has not heard, what hand has not touched, and what has not occurred to the mind of man."
Or as Kabir Has Said
“It is the mercy of my true Guru that has made me to know the Unknown;
I have learned from Him how to
walk without feet,
to see without eyes,
to hear without ears,
to drink without mouth,
to fly without wings."
After the Teacher Dies, All We Have Are Old Scriptures From Now On? Rather, There is Succession and a New Living One Appointed For the Next Generation in the Gospel of Thomas
12) The students said to Yeshua, We know you will leave us. Who will be our leader?
Yeshua said to them, Wherever you are, seek out Yaakov the Just. For his sake heaven and earth came into being.
12. The Disciples said to Jesus: We know that you will go away from us. Who is it that will be our teacher?
Jesus said to them: Wherever you are, you will go to James the Righteous, for whose sake Heaven and Earth were made (came into being.)
For Whose Sake Heaven and Earth Came Into Being, an Old Hebrew Axiom of Wisdom Explained
"Whenever feeling downcast, each person should vitally remember, 'For my sake, the entire world was created.'" (Baal Shem Tov)
The Baal Shem Tov is sort of the "Rumi" or "Kabir" of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), an example of a towering figure and great mystic of one of the great schools of spirituality. The ending part, "For my sake, the entire world was created", is a variation of an ancient axiom of wisdom. A version of it even turns up in saying twelve of the Gospel of THOMAS: "The students said to Yeshua, 'We know you will leave us. Who will be our leader?' Yeshua said to them, 'Wherever you are, seek out Yaakov the Just [James the Just]. For his sake heaven and earth came into being.'"
Martin Buber elaborates and expands on this axiom in a way that includes us all: “Every person should know and consider the fact that you, in the particular way that you are made, are unique in the world, and no one like you has ever been. For if someone like you had already been, there would be no reason for you to be in this world.” (Ten Rings: Hasidic Sayings, Martin Buber)
Here's a big picture view from the Sikh scriptures of India, the Adi Granth, Peace Lagoon translation: "It was for the sake of the God-conscious beings that our True Lord created this earth, and began this play of death and birth".
