"Love every person, regardless of his sinful state.  Sin is sin, the basis of a human being is one and only - the image of God.”

“Faith includes noticing the mess, the emptiness and discomfort, and letting it be there until some light returns. Faith also means reaching deeply within, for the sense one was born with, the sense, for example, to go for a walk.”

True faith is not a mere assent of the mind leaving the rest of us untouched, it is a sword penetrating our inmost vitals, leaving no area unaffected. It is no wonder we are not in a hurry to believe. It is going to mean the destruction of self-seeking.

The Christian faith is kaleidoscopic, and most of us are color-blind. It is multidimensional, and most of us manage to hold at most two dimensions in our heads at any one time. It is symphonic, and we can just about whistle one of the tunes.
NT Wright on the wide and kaleidoscopic nature of the Christian faith (via contrariansoul)

The butterfly in a caterpillar, the eagle in an egg, the saint in a selfish person.” Whoever sees this is a genius, a genius in love. He picks up what is hidden in the other and is able through his loving way of looking to call it forth. “To reveal to a person his or her own beauty” is how Jean Vanier defines love. Jesus had a special gift for this. He created a climate in which people could unfold themselves, in which they discovered the good they carried in themselves. In the last Easter letter before his death, Bishop Klaus Hemmerle of Aachen wrote, “I wish each of us Easter eyes, able to perceive in death, life; in guilt, forgiveness; in separation, unity; in wounds, glory; in the human, God; in God, the human; and in the I, the You”

As long as within society a possessing and a non-possessing group of human beings face one another in enmity, the state will be indispensable to the possessing minority for the protection of its privileges.

The church must accept its new situation as a minority subculture within a pluralistic world with grace and quiet confidence. If God is real, if Jesus is God, and if the Holy Spirit is the driving force behind the church, we do not need guns, laws, and the favor of non-Christian rulers in order to succeed in our mission. We have the opportunity to live by faith in God, rather than by faith in the state. After Christendom is an exciting time to be in ministry. Instead of lamenting the passing of Christendom, let us humbly say amen to postmodernist and postcolonialist attacks on the evils of Christendom. Then, let us get on with the task of sharing the good news that there is another way to live—a way that sometimes requires dying but never killing, a way that involves following Jesus as his disciples rather than trusting in religious rituals to make up for our refusal to follow him, a way that involves serving others rather than dominating, controlling, and exploiting them.

Mahasiddha Kukkuripa
A Tantric practitioner who, after coming across a weakened dog unable to stand, carried & fed her & was happy as she regained her vigor.
They spent 12 years together as the yogin recited mantra in a cave. After achieving some siddha, the gods of the 33 Sensual Heavens invited him to their paradise to celebrate his achievement. He accepted.
Kukkuripa’s faithful dog waited & anguished for him in the cave. The yogin missed her but was always convinced by the gods to remain. Then a day came in which Kukkuripa saw his dog from heaven & his heart anguished for her. He left paradise & joined her. Both were happy. As he reached to pet her, she transformed into a dakini. For overcoming his temptation to remain in the heavenly realm due to self-fixation, she praised & instructed him on the achievement of the symbolic union of skillful means and perfect insight. He attained supreme realization & engaged in altruistic service then ascended to the Paradise of the Dakinis.

The church needs a liturgical structure like the psalms that has the full range of human emotions, that confronts us with our brokenness, but not so that we despair. That’s the good news of Christianity for me. It’s not that you can be happy and whole, but rather that life is crap and you don’t know the answers. It’s good news to be freed from the oppression that there’s something that’s going to make it all better. When you’re free from that and begin to work through your brokenness and suffering with a set of rituals, practices and sacraments that help us encounter our humanity, I think we become more loving, more beautiful, more grace-filled people.
Peter Rollins in a recent interview about his new book The Idolatry of God (via modestproposals)
