!!!  so-  one  of  the  things  that  annoys  me  most  about  canon  is  that  castiel  is  constantly  suffering  from  a  ‘loss  of  self’  i.e.  after  basically  being  cut  off  from  the  heavenly  host;  almost  every  other  angel,  his  own  kind  hating  him-  it’s  a  lot.  anyway,  why  i  bring  this  up  in  conjunction  to  eating  is  because  in  the  beginning,  eating  is  something  that  castiel  struggled  with.  castiel  is  a  humble  angel-  but  only  because  they  have  been  forcibly  humbled  by  many  of  the  events  that  have  happened  to  them.  to  angels  who  have  become  human,  having  to  eat  and  conduct  themselves  as  humans  is  probably,  to  some  degree,  humiliating?  one  has  to  remember  that  while  we  see  angels  like  balthazar  and  gabriel  who  are  very  hedonistic  and  indulgent,  as  an  angel,  that  wasn’t  castiel.  the  show  time  and  time  again  gives  us  examples  of  castiel’s  ‘previous  crowd’,  and  while  some  are...  admirable  to  some  degree  (balthazar),  some  very  much  were  not  (ishim).

cas  definitely  eats  for  sustenance  vs.  eating  for  pleasure  because  of  all  of  this.  eating  something  because  it  tastes  good  is  an  indulgence,  but  after  cas  becomes  an  angel  again  from  being  completely  human,  it  still  really  isn’t  really...  preferred.

but,  cas  also  understands  (and  this  is  part  of  what  i  mean  by  ‘eating  as  an  indulgence)  that  eating  among  humans  is  a  social  gesture  as  well  so  sometimes  ofc  they  like  sitting  with  the  winchesters  or  jack  and  ‘eat  with  them’  (sometimes  this  is  just  sitting  there  with  a  beer  and  a  slice  of  pizza  and  not  touching  much).
